MON HUNTERS thread

oh I’m well familiar with Rajang, I’ve played through MHFU, MH3U, and MH4U. Never played a defensive weapon, though, so that’s something to look forward to.

I haven’t seen it work in world yet but another trick with shields is that if you block an attack with just one active hitbox for the duration of an attack you won’t take a hit for the rest of the attacks animation. The easiest examples in 4U/Gen was something like Kezu body shock or urragan’s gas attack (which you needed guard up to block) if you block the attack early and have enough guard skill to reduce your recovery you can start walking next to a monster while that attack is still in the middle of an animation and not be affected by it.

I only bring up Rajang because I remember that being a constant problem with him. The same can apply to any monster with attacks that strike multiple times.

well at least I wasn’t the one to get us wiped that time!

I’m amazed I keep getting three partners for this one relatively quickly, dude’s gear must be very good considering that he has by far the lowest success rate of any hunt I’ve tried so far (and afaik he only gates super endgame stuff)

i hit high rank at last

but now i’m gonna go back and do all the optional LR quests i missed

its about the journey

yeah he’s on the tier of monsters that you probably want a ton of parts from if you’re going to be a person who plays this game for hundreds of hours, also a lot of people find him difficult so they’re more likely to want to team up

also he rules and is awesome, you could probably get three squadmates to join you (and we won’t wipe)

I got him a few hours ago on run 3! It’s a great fight, this game has a very nice curve to it

though at 26-some hours I think I am approaching the point of being done, the odogaron and legiana runs to get armour that would keep me from getting ohko’ed were the first real grinding I’ve had to do and I think I’m feeling most of the mastery that there is to feel

I love that high rank is designed to get you extra expedition points just for popping in on buds doing other quests but the time it takes to fill those bars is just a liiiittle more than I feel good about

pretty sure I just witnessed a diablos mating ritual

oh goodness no, the skill ceiling on this series just climbs and climbs. I remember finishing high rank in 4U with charge blade and then learning there was a whole tier of mechanics for that weapon I hadn’t even known about. and then I learned about guard point, which would end up valuable in G Rank, etc etc

like on the one hand this game does so many smart things around multi and I love all the little things I’ve picked up just from watching randos who have joined me (even though SOS folks pretty much never have voice on which is probably for the best), but on the other I look at some of these late game mixed armour sets that basically expect you to do 5+ 20 minute hunts plus or minus the RNG just for the boots alone and I feel like I’m ready to call it

I do think it’s a little harder to bring alternate weapons up to respectable levels in the late game than it should be. You should probably be able to buy stuff at rarity ~5 once you’re into the 8-star quests, otherwise the idea of trying to rustle up some paolumu parts for early tier upgrades is kind of unappealing and discourages experimentation

See, i don’t mind the alternate tier level-ups, because it makes me go answer some SOS calls from low level people and help them grind up some. It’s pretty quick and easy to search for a specific low rank mon to hun and bust that out. I had one yesterday where I popped into a game right as the main dude captured a mon, and I got full rewards and that was cool.

That’s what I’m using the Palico Safaris for, getting my element sacs for alternate weapons

yeah i got two poison sacs from my tailraiders last night and i realized that… hmm! i see how this might be useful beyond getting sinister cloth now.

I would probably spend the 600 points just to watch the tailrider safari cutscene tbh.

yeah I clued into this but my return rate is kind of lousy and 600 points is a lot!

I should suck it up I guess

I haven’t bothered with my tailriders much because I hate having to go to my room just to talk to my chamberlain cat. That cutscene for them is great though. I love watching cartoon cats getting into trouble. Makes me wish that the Feyline game that was one part patapon and one part Animal Crossing got a western release or a fan translation.

you can launch em from the third fleet hub

100 hours in and just started using felyne gadgets other than the vigorwasp. Plunder ability is really handy for getting extra monster parts! But also I keep getting cornered at low health and screaming “Toby why aren’t you healing me!? Toby!!!”

Same, it’s tough to try the other gadgets since they’re less useful at their lower level. I’ll bust out the plunder if I’ve got a monster down but if it’s some new HR or an elder dragon I want that Lvl 10 vigor wasp station all day.

I don’t even know how to get other gadgets.

go to your room and talk to your cat!

(that’s advice, not me grounding you)
