gonna celebrate by getting my shit kicked in repeatedly

Yeah, a discord would be the best for pick-up games. I’d start one myself but I don’t trust myself to monitor it consistently enough.

dont worry when you die it all comes out.

I know from experience.

I would also fightcade, or play just about any fighting game with sbers

SamSho rollback beta was initially announced for January 2023, so February 10-17 isn’t that late.

The Evo side tournament last year had around 60 entrants. Rollback was announced for the beginning of this year and now Frosty Faustings this month, a regional tournament, has over 100 entrants. Just goes to show the kind of interest this game had captured that SNK has lost with due to the game’s online play (lack of content definitely didn’t help either- they banked hard on that AI mode that they clearly never got working).

That AI mode was so so bad. I did the 100 vs battles and was able to beat all of them just by hard slashing. Even downloaded the top ten online AIs and they were all awful. Too bad, it was a good idea and would’ve been neat if it worked.

The last time I can think of where an AI created character kind of felt like it represented the player well was VF4 Evolution. I know Smash Bros had it too with their Amiibos - how accurate did that feel?

For as much as I played with it it was hard to tell if AImiibos were actually learning or just ratcheting up how hard they read your inputs and did inhuman inputs of their own. The stand out memory was playing a DK amiibo at full level that would edgeguard me perfectly everytime because all you can do is play chicken and time your up-b/air dodge to make it back to stage against a humans judgement.

Those are all deliberately designed AIs, which is why they’re so much better. How were amiibos supposed to work? Were those supposed to “learn from the player”? I think new Killer Instinct also had a ghost mode, though I don’t know how that implementation works. I think it’s probably true that those are just using the regular CPU AI with certain moves or behaviors amped up.

Clearly SamSho decided to go full “this is generated only from the players themselves”, because all the AIs could do from it’s broken implementation was jump in place. Now that we’re on next gen consoles I think someone will manage to implement they well sooner rather than later though. I wonder if this experience from SamSho will be bad enough to disuade SNK themselves from trying again.

Yeah, I believe it. I could only tell my VF4 Evo’s AI was learning from me bc I’d train it on moves I would never be able to pull of in a match but looks cool (like Pai’s half circle command throw), and then be excited to see the Ai use it like 80% of the time.

Ring of Destruction: Slam Masters II (Capcom, 1994)

Known as “Super Muscle Bomber: The International Blowout” in Japan, this second follow-up to Capcom’s wrestling game Saturday Night Slam Masters (JP: “Muscle Bomber: The Body Explosion”) gets rid of pinning the opponent and restricts movement to a single plane, with two punch and two kick buttons to go with a dedicated grapple button.

Starting to think Capcom’s Saturday Night Slam Masters might be just about my favorite fighting game. Isometric movement sure feels freeing. ^ _^ Each character has a few special moves–an updated version added two more specials per character but heck, you shouldn’t need more than two, right??–but there are no super moves, which I tend to dislike, and no other big type of flashy FX. It was made by the people who made SFII and Final Fight, and it’s like it took all the best things from those games without the annoying parts, and the sprites are bigger and better than the sprites in either of them. It’s got 2 on 2, simultaneous, so tops the whole dang Vs. series. ; ) Plus, wrestling. And a shiny gold logo (which the updated version doesn’t have! 8o).

I’m not sure how that can be topped. = D

Oh, and sometimes in SNSM, everybody loses!

It’s a winner!

Oh thanks, when it occurred to me that I actually liked the isometric part of Slam Masters I’d remembered there was an isometric NEOGEO fighting game but couldn’t quite remember the name. ^ _^

I haven’t played AoDK in ages but I vaguely remember not liking it at all. Looking at video now–well, there’s some horrific screen flashing at times, so that pretty much kills it for me anyway. But besides that I’ve never quite been able to get into ADK’s games. Nice sprite work in that one though.

What the go to for NeoGeo emulation these days? I’m wanting to play some Rage of the Dragons again

It’ll come out someday…
