Well heck. Where’s the text from?

OH the video description. Well aha.

Yeah. I wonder why it includes a note like “・Freeze when winning in tag mode” then. Maybe they mean it’s homebrew, rather than the video itself being fake.

Or that it’s playing in an emulator? Although that would be fairly obvious anyhow.

It’s a little tough to tell. This is a person–the person?–involved in releasing MOW2 stuff this summer

They had also at some point worked for SNK, and rescued a bundle of VHS tapes that were about to be thrown out

and put them on YouTube, saying

‘I wanted to preserve not only commercials and PVs, but also videos of “Band of Fighters” for future generations.’

Their last tweet is

‘“Once a maniac joined a company he admired, the management was going downhill, so he used his observation skills to preserve important materials, but he forgot about their existence and finally released them 20 years later, and it took a year and three months to reveal everything. The matter that has been made public
Completely finished.’

In May they had posted a couple screenshots from this MotM2 thing

but then in August

they said

“【apology】
The following images that I posted before are fan-made art that has nothing to do with SNK.
If there is a similar post this month, please understand that it has nothing to do with SNK.
Please refrain from mentioning related parties as it may cause inconvenience.”

And in a tweet of the title screen after that

they said

"From next month, I think I’ll start working on the final purpose of creating this Twitter account.

Oh, I’ll say it again and again, but it’s a fan-made work like MUGEN, it’s a fake image, and it’s all fiction, so it doesn’t matter.
I would appreciate it if you could simply enjoy it while imagining various things."

Soon after that, they tweet vs screens, without any kind of disclaimer

saying

“The nameless SNK character looks like Eri from Metal Slug.”

But soon after that, they tweet more screens

with a disclaimer

“Oh, it’s a fanart.”

And from that point, they’re consistent in referring to screenshots as “fanart” (this is all Google Translate, of course), and videos as “fake video.” There are a few mentions of trying to make sure that “overseas” viewers understand. …

Here, someone asks in Japanese if these are a “hackrom”

to which this person replies

‘What I’m uploading is just a fake video.
Is there such a thing as “Hackrom”?’

Eight days later, there are a couple more elaborate disclaimers, beginning to sound a bit parodic

'It is a fake video (2/2) of Hotaru.

Additional Special Moves and Super Special Moves.
I didn’t know much about M○W, but I can understand that this is a different character’s technique.

“This fake video is fiction. It has nothing to do with a real person (big brother), group, special move, super special move, etc.”’

'K°’s fake video (2/2).

“This fake video is fiction. It has nothing to do with real people (clones), groups (NESTS), special moves, super special moves, etc.”

In the second half, I recorded a collection of continuous tricks.
It’s very moving to think that something like this was made more than 20 years before the release of the K0F2000.’

It’s unclear could be meant by “KOF2000” there. But aside from that, “more than 20 years” from now would date it back to the MotM era, which would preclude it from being a homebrew. So… Hm.

About this time there’s an odd series of tweets involving “fake” and “fiction” and someone getting offended–although that might have been in relation to something else:

‘Speaking of which, at my job interview,
“Can you tell us about our company’s games?”
when asked
"… For the time being, is it okay if I start with the games I’ve played in order from the New Japan Planning era?
“Sasuke vs Commander, Athena, Psycho…”
When I told
“Ah, that’s enough.”
He said.’

“Last night’s retweet seemed to have offended Mr. Tsui very badly, so I deleted it.
I reflect on various things.”

“Speaking of which, the job interview I tweeted the other day is of course a fake story.
I don’t think I will say such a big deal anymore, but I hope you will continue to accept it as a fictional story.”

They also https://twitter.com/2021Kduck/status/1578748057604091905 call the videos “retakes,” because they didn’t like the “composition” they had shot a month earlier.

So uh anyway, it sounds like perhaps they got some blowback on posting stuff, and decided to start putting disclaimers on things to be able to avoid some hassle. Don’t know, it’s kind of hard to tell. Which would be the whole point of them having put the disclaimers on, I suppose.

Whoa, the animation on the NGPC Hsien Ko is ridiculously impressive. It’s so accurate, I’m wondering how it could fit on cartridge. Just way smoother than what I remember MOTM having.

The white on K’s hair seems so outside the established art style that it’s gotta be totally fake.

So a buddy of mine and I, are looking to do some light fight nights on fridays, might be cool to set up a tighter group of semi familiar people over time to grow with. Not sure if anyone here is doing that or looking to do that.

Cheers.

This might just be placeholder stuff left behind but makes me wonder if USF2 was perhaps meant to be a bit more of an ambitious project at some point before getting rushed out to meet the Switch launch.

Highlight of that second video is at around 0:23 to hear Ono say “Satsui no Hadou ni Mezameta Ryu” at ludicruous speed.

Two years back, I had hooked a couple of my friends onto Guilty Gear. Recently, I just got them to setup Figthcade with the idea that we would play through a history of fighting games post-SFII that would help show how we got to something as complicated as Guilty Gear. However, I am not an expert on developments.

We started with SFII World Warriors, which is gloriously simple. Most characters only have two specials and sometimes the special is just banging a button as fast as you can. Throws are enormously powerful. It’s good.

My questions for you all are, “What games were significant steps toward the Guilty Gear series? What were significant developments?” In my head, I think Darkstalkers and the Capcom-developed Marvel games are important, but I’m curious to hear what more learned scholars have to say on the matter.

BTW, if you’ve got Fightcade and are looking to play against people you know, I’m open!

SF Alpha series, SF III series, KOF series, Samurai Shodown series.

I feel like the air game in MArvel vs Capcom and later SF Alpha contributed a lot, and I’m not sure how much the doujin fight game scene fed into Guilty Gear, but Last Blade can be felt in a whole lot of doujin titles

Make sure you don’t skip the X-Men fighting games when looking at the Marvel series. Asuka 120% was also pretty influential for a lot of anime games, I think. Aside from Samurai Shodown and Last Blade, keeping an eye out for other “weapon fighters” to get a peak at of what that sub-genre was like.

The first Guilty Gear had those insta-kill attacks which feel a bit Time Killers, but I’d be shocked if that actually had traction in Japan.

After I posted my questions, I started to think that it would be better to look at specific details and investigate them one by one. One thing I found super unique about Guilty Gear was Zato-1’s “puppet” style of fighting, so I started to look into what games tried it first.

Here’s my rough, reverse-timeline starting with Guilty Gear X where Zato-1 controls Eddie like a puppet:

2000

  • Guilty Gear X: Zato-1
  • Asura Buster: Alice

1998

  • Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future
This game actually has several puppet characters, since many stands act like that:
    Devo

Polnareff

1995

  • Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer: Karin Son
I think this is an edge case because the mini version moves independently of inputs, but the way it pressures the opponent looks similar.

You may wish to look up @pattheflip’s Games with Bee series, because they played a lot of games leading up to Guilty Gear and explained how they influenced the anime fighting genre. Wish they were still doing more, but I think Pat’s a lot more into being a TO and community organizer for Xrd than he is into making videos for YouTube.

You can add Darkstalkers 2 (1995) to your puppet list thanks to Anakaris’ Pharaoh Split ex move.
