Actually, if you want a more abstract style of contemporary FPS, I’ve been enjoying my time with this one GZDooM title.

I played the stellar blade demo. it’s alright I guess but the nier comparisons don’t go any further than the booby protagonist and excessively maudlin melodramatic tone of its cutscenes, which feel copied note-for-note from automata with no real sense of purpose. cynically I want to guess it’s this way as a pre-emptive deflection against criticisms for how horny its character design, but it could just be earnest admiration and imitation. probably a bit of both.

the actual game is basically sekiro plus ninja gaiden. it’s probably fine as a genre thing but it just makes it clear how hollow and artificial all the controversy is. right wingers very badly want the purple-haired tumblrina wokescolds that live in their heads to be up in arms but literally no one is talking about it but them. it’s up there with sydney sweeney’s boobs in terms of deluded manufactured culture war fodder. no one cares except for people who hate the horizon games because aloy wasn’t run through the yassification machine enough times.

the comparisons to nier automata are a little exhausting because while 2B’s butt made headlines when the game was announced, no one would still be talking about it if the writing wasn’t as good as it is. what’s fun about 2B is that she is a cliched eye-candied protagonist in a game that shamelessly embraces it trashiest genre conventions, who, alongside her cohorts and even relatively minor npc’s, happens to be treated with jarring amounts of seriousness, humanity, and genuine pathos. it’s debatable whether this is enough for it to amount to more than just deeply sublime camp, nor can I say if this justifies how hanging out at the yorha base feels like being backstage at a victoria’s secret runway show, but if all automata had going for it was fan service we wouldn’t be having this conversation and stellar blade likely wouldn’t even exist.

I’m judging only from how phoned-in the writing in the demo is but I doubt stellar blade will be on anyone’s mind at all by the end of the year. which is why I feel like yoko taro saying on record that stellar blade is better than automata is a just a tongue-in-cheek flex.

anyway,

this is pretty good signature material:

I know what you are thinking, “why are you linking to some random new metrovania?”. The reason is that this is the new game by the guy behind Vision Soft Reset, best game I stumbled upon when playing through that first giant charity bundle and who brought some legit fresh ideas to the genre then. This on the surface seems a bit more typical but said guy earned my attention from that last game.

Is there any modern home console DDR?

One of my friends has a Stepmaniax unit in his garage. In terms of price and weight, it’s somewhere in between the old home slippery pads and the old arcade pads.
