New PS5 hardware update dropped and it finally lets you dim the power indicator light. It is absurd it took them three or so years to sort this out (I have the PS5 in my bedroom and have a piece of cardboard over part of it so I can sleep without light in my eyes) but I’m just thankful it is finally handled.

Now maybe Microsoft can give me the option to turn off the incredibly loud, sudden, and jarring BWOOOM that echoes across my apartment whenever I have the gall to turn on my Xbox Series Whatever.

That’s quite a leap between consoles, just under 5 years. I’ll be tempted since I love Grandia 2 and have been curious about revisiting Grandia however I have a 3rd story to tell:

Digital Foundry was shown this game when it came out on switch. I’ve come around on DF mostly John Lindleman who really loves video games and has as deep of well of knowledge as any of us. He sat down with the game and immediately called over the staff and went “Hey can we turn off the filter or do integer scaling?” “You said this was based off the Saturn version but this is absolutely the PS1 version of Grandia.” Staff, “No this is the PS1.” “Look this is not using the VP1 to do an infinite tile map, this is the weirdly placed junk tiles of the PS1 version.”

Turns out there would be no options to turn off the shitty filter and they were quickly ushered out of the room with a cold shoulder.

Supposedly they both play fine if you can get past the filters. I don’t recommend looking at the trailer because I know it was edited by an asshole who harassed friends. Did I need to say that? I think about it every time this port crosses my eyeballs.

I’ll probably just take this oppurtunity to play it on the Mister Saturn Core in Japanese. Like I need another 50+ Hour Japanese RPG to play.

I definitely saw that trailer at some point, saw the filter, and noped right the fuck out

According to the guide to remove the filtering for the PC version you just have to delete a bunch of files in the game, nothing else. So it’s not even running a real time filter; it’s already running the unfiltered version of the game, and layering pre-filtered sprites on top of that.

I had the grandia hd collection on the switch and it’s totally fine but you might as well play the translated saturn version so the textures aren’t misaligned or play the ps1 version with a crt filter or something. I didn’t play the grandia 2 hd version much but the dreamcast version still looks like it’s from the future so it really doesn’t need “HD” either, that game looks like it came out on the fucking xbox. if you play it in redream its peak high res cute jrpg graphics next to like, idk, zwei

damn i’m gonna play grandia 2 when i finish baldur’s gate 3, i need to take the corners off

they say a lot of things without actually getting to the idea that they’re forking source that was killed or that they think can just change to MIT license like it was a cheat code

the actual answer is the One Weird Trick the VLC and Ryujinx teams use: operate outside US jurisdiction

yeah, but that’s mostly useful for avoiding patent encumbrance, which is well established

though it is generally accurate to say that there are a lot of well established ways of avoiding software copyright laws when doing legitimate preservation work (including both explicit US exemptions and gray area stuff), even and especially when 90% of the consumers of that preservation work mostly wanna play video games or watch movies for free, and yuzu boldly used none of them

I love that technically Dolphin is in violation of the DMCA in one of the ways Yuzu was (having some amount of keys included for runtime decryption) but so far Nintendo has only cared to block them off Steam instead of outright murdering them (also I guess the Dolphin devs don’t have a cache of pre-release pirated games)

Directly selling access is a sufficiently Bad Look as to elevate whatever other sins occurred from venial to mortal.

it definitely feels like having monetary numbers they can point to makes a lot easier to pull together a case

Still not really sure what you DO in the long term but I’ll take playable bugs.

Lately I’ve been getting behind with game trailer events and announcement shit. I attribute being busy with work as part of it. E3 dying has helped me grow. I didn’t even bat an eye when:

Didn’t put it in my diary even. I’m gonna go on holiday and not even care. Is this what it feels like to ignore games media?

It’s not so bad.

Consistently thrilled that McShane, who by all rights is talented enough to become a Brando or Welles-like grumpy artistic recluse, is seemingly willingly to work anything for a buck
