La vie en vert (GAME BOY thread)

Lolo turning enemies into eggs and then destroying them always felt like some deeply significant arcane shit that I’d understand when I was older, but I still don’t

the first time i played Ocarina of Time it was with my brother on a copy at our friends’ house that was already completed, so mostly it was just wandering around through the world as adult Link poking around the Spirit or Forest Temples or going to fight Ganondorf and not knowing how to actually do damage. the next time was when my brother got a copy and i read a walkthrough out to him. i still don’t think i’ve actually played it through myself but i like to think about the Forest Temple music a lot

anyway don’t mind me

I’m thinking about playing through a bunch of baseball games now that VC covered golf. There truly is no better way to pass the time.

I made a set of all of these ROMs for my woodboy since I’m gonna be on a plane for a bit, figured y’all could use em too

sorry if any are missing or weird!! some of the games were straight up missing from my ROMset so I downloaded them, and some I guessed at having similar, but not identical, names.

Oh sick! i should load this onto my own device. I’ve been hand picking things thus far and my hands are getting tired!

yeah that’s part of the reason i haven’t participated as much in these as I’d like to - I’m too lazy to keep the list open, then load a ROM!! instead I spent 40 minutes making this lol

I understand this on an intensely personal level.

a dumb thing i want to do right now is play mega man v without the horrendous amounts of lag it, but i’m having trouble finding a GB emulator that supports overclocking (please don’t tell me i need to muck around with mame or retroarch)

it runs successfully on NDS lameboy , but without full soundtrack. Music only works well on a PC emulator.

Between Tarzan: Lord of The Jungle, The Jungle Book, and Tar-chan there are a lot of jungle-men games in 1994.

I tried to play some but got too sleepy.

Story of my life these past couple of days.

Okay got to play some of these

Welcom Nakayoshi Park
Tie in with a shoujou manga. You walk around an amusement park with some C- sprite work and play little mini games to win tickets to get autographs from Sailor Moon and others I recognize but do not know the name of.

Kenyuu Densertsu Yaiba
Tie in with a manga I’ve never read relatively mediocre platformer but the music reminds me strongly of Anamanaguchi for whatever reason.

Pachi-Slot Kids 2
Fucking buck wild story on this one. You’ve been raised by your mom in America and in 2nd Grade on her deathbed she tells you your dad is still alive somewhere in Japan. Your only clue is a photograph of him standing in front of a pachinko parlor. Now get out there and play Coconuts style pachi-slot. I know I’ve played multiple Pachinko games by Coconuts but all that shit runs together.

Pachio-kun Puzzle Something Something
Someone else play this and figure out the rules because I did not. Match 3 game except ??? Shrug emoji

Yuyu Hakushou Dai 3
After a lengthy intro and little top down skit and walk around town play some bad Kungfu. If you die wake up back in bed from the start. That was neat.

Shin SD Gundam Gaiden knight Gundam Monogatari
A Zelda-like but also has a collectible card gimmick. I’ve tried to play this 3 nights in a row and trying to parse the hiragana as I am falling asleep doesn’t work. You don’t even start with a sword! Guess I gotta find a sword card somewhere. You wake up on a boat with amnesia and the captain tells you well this place we’re going has some crazy legends maybe you’ll get your memories back if you adventure here!

3-Chome Tama and Friends
Or something like that. I got Lady Rude to play this one because Natsukashii! Turns out it is about walking around a haunted house as a cat doing sokoban while ghosts try to touch you. It is not very good.

Okay going to bed!

Thank you for keeping the dream alive. I’ve been sort of action-paralyzed recently and regret all the posts I haven’t made :girder:

At the 11th hour, I finally have something to say about a GAME BOY game from 1994. It’s Ultraman Ball. I have never seen Ultraman anything, so I was not prepared for the list of characters and would-be familiar monsters. I certainly was not prepared for Ultraman to turn into a ball of putty. What’s up with that? Surely I would have seen him do that in a commercial or something. I thought he was just a big Power Ranger robot Superman, not this.

The game is actually pretty decent for how short it is. I mean, I wouldn’t recommend it, but I was surprised to find myself pushing through to the end.

As Ultraman, I can change between man form and ball form at will. As a ball, I can jump extra high, kill enemies and roll on spikes. However, I can’t really control myself all that well. I wish the game was iterated on just a little bit more. There are these Sonic-esque half-pipes that beg me to drop into, but when I do, I lose all inertia.

Even if rolling is no fun, bouncing is. It’s great to throw caution to the wind and bounce full speed towards oblivion.
