I didn’t go back to Kid Dracula again at any point during the month.
Just wasn’t feeling it.

It looks great.
It sounds great.
It has cute little joke bits.

In the general sense it was what I expected it to be; a challenging action platformer that played a bit like Mega Man.

The biggest mistake in my pre-impressions was that I thought it was just the beginning that didn’t quite catch and that once I got further in I’d be into it.
Turns out I’m just not into it.

It does a lot right, but it’s not for me.

It’s true. The releases shrink smaller and smaller until Pokemon hits. For my own selfish reasons, I’m going to be very busy for a good chunk of May, I’d like to keep it this way for now. 1994 has just about as many games as 1990, and it seems like there are still a good many gems. Let’s see how we feel on the 15th?

I tried Daiku no Gen-san - Robot Teikoku no Yabou

Hammerin’ Harry in SPACE!!!





It feels a lot like Kung-Fu Master (A.K.A Spartan X).
It is equally relentless.
It feels like they wanted to do Kung-Fu Master but with more complicated levels.

I don’t hate this.
If I had it as a kid I’m sure I would have played this constantly.
You’d need to play this constantly to get anywhere in it. It’s quite difficult.

Don’t underestimate Wario Land, it’s very uniquely weird game in it’s own right. Even if DK94 is better.

But like bachelor said, DK94 might be the game of the decade, so it’s not much of knock on Wario Land

So I heard from someone who decompiles games a lot that the GB cannot write graphics directly to the screen, and so “3D” titles like X and Race Driving in fact used a massive spritesheet containing every possible angle of line in order to render the graphics. Does anyone know if this is true? If so I feel like I may faint

I had this game!! It contains a great remix of Comic Bakery

Its the first time i’d heard those telltale euro arpeggios on the gb. The first actual time was Chuck Rock Jr on the Game gear

This is the first Jurassic Park 2 on the gb hilariously. Its a sequel to the game, not a tie-in to the movie or book. The second one is the tie-in.

Decent platformer-with-a-gun but nothing special really.

The GB has VRAM for the tile graphics, so per-pixel plotting is certainly possible (just cumbersome). There’s still a high chance of the ROM having large look-up-tables of possible line combinations, but that’s not quite the same thing as using sprites.

I do know that some allegedly “3D” 8-bit games are glorified FMV games (e.g. Days of Thunder on NES), but that again is not the same thing.

yeah, there’s a toy story racing game for the GBC that has prerendered levels that you drive through. It’s a pretty neat trick

The first Lolo game on the NES is the first game I ever owned as a seven-year-old. I was petrified of his bizarre death-howl, and I had neither the sense of logic nor the action wherewithal to complete the game myself until I watched my dad map out and complete every room first. In retrospect, this seems like a pretty fundamental part of my upbringing—to this day, I would almost always rather play through games with a guide or walkthrough than without. I cannot hate that awful single background track as it is the soundtrack to my soul.

All of which is merely preface to say that I delighted in your write-up of this adjacent title of which I had only the vaguest knowledge. Lolo and Lala always seemed like symbolic figures of pantomime, so I’m flabbergasted to see Lala talking about enjoying music—again, an ironic choice considering the ways the first game fell down the musical staircase.

the music in this seems like a response to the NES game having a single tune that played for the entirety of the game. I was fascinated by the fact that it was Sorta Kinda generative. It’s cool.
