it's more fun to emulate

Sunsoft drew their NES and GB graphics using some in-house software they developed for the FDS.

Yeah, by the late 80s I imagine that most game artists were drawing on a computer. Not sure how much attention they placed on what it would actually look like on a consumer tv though. That probably varied, but a number of 80s computers did support composite output.

From a Sakurai video, here’s how they made the graphics for Kirby’s Dream Land: https://youtu.be/ZUY2AtBD6Sk?t=121

Someone get Sakurai a Retrotink

This thread on the PCSX2 forum

https://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-60-fps-codes

has tons of “cheat” codes for the emulator, kicking 30 fps PS2 games up to 50 and/or 60 fps in emulation. These take the form of “.pnach” text files, which you can download and put in PCSX2’s “cheats” folder, then check to enable under a game’s “Properties” in PCSX2’s settings.

I posted one recently for Super Monkey Ball Deluxe. : ) Got the actual memory addresses and values it uses from smarter people–codes by Josh_7774 that I found on gamehacking.org, and additional codes supplied by Gabominated on the PCSX2 forum.

Note that this 60 fps cheat BREAKS SMBD’s party games “Monkey Golf” (power meter doesn’t work) and “Monkey Tennis” (runs too fast):

(Gabominated seems to have some hopes that fixes for those two party games not being compatible with the cheat can eventually be found.)

The rotated “Arcade” screen mode in Namco Museum Vol. 3 (PS1) is an excellent version of Ms. Pac-Man–even does a number of things better than the actual arcade version (ie arcade ROM extracted from Steam version of Arcade Game Series Ms. Pac-Man and played in latest MAME):

  • more distinct dot-eating sounds–they don’t double-up like in MAME
  • rounder Ms. Pac-Man (superior aspect ratio when set to “PAR 1:1” in DuckStation; “PAR” stands for “Pixel Aspect Ratio” ‘p’)
  • much better at keeping my high score (MAME’s auto-save-state high score is easy for me to mess up and lose ; D)

The Steam extracted arcade ROM in MAME does do a few things better:

  • easier-on-the-eyes maze wall colors (not as super-bright as the PS1 version)
  • slightly larger overall graphics size on-screen

Those two factors in MAME’s favor are probably gonna keep me playing Ms. P in MAME for the most part–but the PS1 version is really good in its own right.

Is there a primer for iOS emulation? Just bought myself a gamesir Galileo and would like to experience the dream from like 2010

I tried to do this a while back and my busy dad life made it seem like too much of a hassle.

Like every guide is “you launch the emulator then you play the games you got on your phone.” How do you get the games on to your phone (???)

It was something about using iCloud and the thought of opening iCloud on Windows 11 was such a headache I abandoned the idea.

Ah that part isn’t too bad. Google drive can hold the roms and you can download via that. The iOS file system app kinda sucks but is functional.

My issue is finding roms and then knowing what runs on this thing. What is JIT and why do I care? What can I emulate? Is there a MonHun game for a MHW player? Should I just play remote play from my PS5?? Please lmk thx

Edit: what is side loading and how is that related to jailbreaking?

Christian side loading

At this point you just download Retroarch and PPSSPP. You can handle up to Dreamcast in Retroarch.

archive and the htgdb pack for all cartridges, various redumps for CD media.

I don’t mind that retroarch takes a lot of fiddling or that it likes to explicably break and you have to redo everything what I can’t stand about it and why I want to drop it for any viable alternative as soon as possible is just because this stupid thing where adding games they have to match up to some invisible database or otherwise be manually added by editing some text file, so every translation patched game which will never show cover art, and then I have to browse every games list as some single file column of text

Unfortunately, the only solution is to use the even-worse desktop mode to manage your playlists. Then you don’t have to edit any text files and have a UI (that is bad and annoying to use) but which you can just drag and drop stuff on, rename stuff

You can also see the contents of their too-hidden database files by going to information on the main menu

Then you can retitle translation patched games to match what’s in the database, download the thumbnails, and then change their titles to whatever else makes sense to you.

It’s stupid and terrible

In Retroarch is wireless multiplayer possible between two devices? Like, can you have two laptops emulate the Nintendo DS and have them see each other as real Nintendo DSes? Or… a real DS and an emulated DS?

i’ve done it with psp emulators to play monster hunter at least. i don’t remember the details but i remember it as somewhat complicated but not that difficult in the end

A recent RPCS3 change has made it so that Demon’s Souls may fail to load or at least have severe slowdown if you go with the RPCS3 Wiki recommended “Advanced - Maximum Number of SPURS Threads = 3” setting; apparently leaving that on “Unlimited (Default)” is the way to go now. Got my game running again, anyway.

Also I only just found mods are a thing for the game. I like these two (email registration required in order to be able to download them, bleh):

Hi-Res Font Update with Button Glyphs at Demon's Souls Nexus - Mods and community - “Hi Res Font Update With Button Glyphs” (partially problematic–see next post)

Gray outline removal at Demon's Souls Nexus - Mods and community - “Gray Outline Removal”

Various mods are collections of ReShade shaders; the only ReShade shader I found actually useful so far is LumaSharpen (settings Strength 1.727, Limit 0.131 seem decent), which really does do wonders for PS3 games up-rezzed from their original 720p like DS and VF5FS.

Two downsides of ReShade in RPCS3: makes RPCS3 crash on quit sometimes ‘p’, and the shaders are on for every game run from the emulator–although you can kinda work around that by setting RPCS3 to target for instance the Vulkan renderer, then setting the games you DON’T want ReShaded to use the OpenGL renderer instead.

Tried a popular mod called Boletaria Reborn or something like that, which revamps DS’s lighting, but it made the prison for instance way too dark.

Update: Another mod I do like:

Subtle Soul Form Effect at Demon's Souls Nexus - Mods and community - “Subtle Soul Form Effect” – removes the bright glow on soul form

Aha well my noobishness with Demon’s Souls mods has been punished:

  • The “Gray Outline Removal” mod adds a twenty-seconds-long black screen before the normal load screen when warping between levels ; PPP

  • The “Hi-Res Font Update with Button Glyphs” mod for some reason INCORPORATES the “Gray Outline Removal” mod, and this adds the same travel loading time; however, if you install JUST the “font” folder part of it–at least, just the two files in the “na_english” subfolder there (didn’t test w/ the other regions)–then you do get the HD font without the additional load time

  • Also, the “Hi-Res Font Update with Button Glyphs” for some reason removes the button icons on the d-pad key (or whatever it’s called) in the lower-left corner of the HUD, so you no longer have the “” (Square) icon over the lower rectangle that shows your currently selected healing item, for instance; fortunately though if you install just those two font files mentioned above, this problem does not occur

This is fixed as of RPCS3 build 17020.

I wonder if anyone knows the answer to a question that just crossed my mind.

Do remakes/remasters of games foster more interest to the roms of those games?
While companies argue that it’s ‘perseveration’ even though it’s the opposite in several ways, I would guess several people want to see what the differences and similarities are. It would be kind of interesting if in their push to capitalize on the past they push for more piracy as well?

i don’t know if it’s even possible to find thoat out. BUT!

when the turtles cowabunga collection came out on modern systems, i remember people selling discs with cases and covers and such of a dreamcast version that included the games in the official collection, plus a bunch more from systems like the zx spectrum and so on, plus some romhacks, beats of rage games, cartoon episodes, a vanilla ice music video, and more.
