What’s the best way to play arcade roms these days? Just load up a core in retroarch? Or is there a frontend that folks around here prefer?
I would generally argue that Mame is always the best option because of the push for accuracy over speed and would only use dedicated emulators/cores for either specific systems (probably the big and main example is the Neo Geo) or for instances where Mame lacks good or any support (mostly more modern 3D platforms like any of the Sega 3D boards or a large number of laserdisc-based games)
Downloading a mame romset with that mame emulator and just dealing with it.
Alternately fightcade/neo burn for fighters and cave
Dedicated model 2 and 3 emulators
oh shit

If you get Launchbox and Mame with a matching romset launch box will walk you through doing the import and organize your roms for you and automatically pulls in things like art, descriptions, star ratings. It has a favorites system, online leader boards for some games and searching by things like genre, publisher etc.
It’s been really easy.
Something I really didn’t know was actually practical:
From what I understand if you pay Microsoft 20 bucks you get access to developer mode on any Xbox which lets you install your own apps to it. This includes RetroArch which the XboxSS has enough power to run even GameCube games in. You can easily switch between retail mode (necessary to go back to to play regular games) and developer mode whenever you wish after.
This feature has been present even in the Xbox One but came with the drawback that the process of switching between the two modes could take 30 minutes to finish. With the new SSD equipped consoles that time is reduced to 4-5 minutes.
Does anyone know of an emulator (preferably cross-platform) that would allow for PC Engine netplay with multitap support? Delay-based net code is not a dealbreaker as this would be for a turn-based game.
you could use something like parsec to handle the net portion (spoofing being on the same pc) and just use a regular emulator! that’s what i think has been easiest these days, in-emulator options are much more fickle ime
Yeah, I had thought of that but I would prefer to keep bandwidth usage low if possible which is why I’m asking for an emulator-centric solution. You also can’t host Parsec games on a Mac.
retroarch is cross platform and has netplay but i’ve never used that function. i don’t know of anything else
I won’t lie, the reason I asked the question was because I couldn’t remember what browser-based cloud emulator Desert Bus used this year to do the event virtually, and I finally found it last night:
Unfortunately, you need to host your own version if you want to expand the range of available ROMs, but it’s still neat that this works at all
For years, Okage: Shadow King has only ever performed well using the Software renderer in PCSX2. I’ve recently tried to get it run smoothly using OpenGL, but it always chugged when there were multiple characters on screen. Switching to D3DL11, though, I get almost no slowdown in Tenel whereas it usually causes a 10 to 20 frame drop.
Settings:
Enable Allow DATE
Enable Allow 8-Bit Textures
Enable Auto Flush under Advanced Settings & Hacks
Set Skipdraw Range to 1/1 under Advanced Settings & Hacks
I have the internal resolution set to 5x Native, which seems to be about as high as I can go without it slowing down.
The only issue so far is that shadows look a bit goofy, but without some of the above settings, they look way more fucked up. The game looks so much better this way and the text is a lot easier to read. I’m also not noticing anymore slowdown than I would in Software mode, as well.
First is Software mode (don’t be fooled by the thumbnail), second is with Hardware:
(This old guy will be the first I smother with my evil shadow)
i’ve never seen metal gear solid 4 running at 60 fps, i cant wait until the type of hardware used to do this is more affordable + gradual improvements w/ development doing their part
sick
Didn’t realize what was actually missing when emulating Game Boy games
I saw this but didn’t understand what it was showcasing. Is it the different pitches or the modulation on them that the Unknowns make?
