Fraser did skip the Golden Globes, which is uhhh very fair
Just want to point out that as I watch this my wife is sitting next to me on the couch with headphones on watching an elden ring play through on her laptop and I still can’t get her to post here
“I wrote this song with my friend Blood Pop for the film Top Gun Maverick… It’s deeply personal” is the funniest thing anyone’s ever said on the Oscars
wretched. to think parasite won only 3 years ago
Someone needs to give him an actual Oscar so he can do this shtick for a bigger audience
I found this very moving too but also very much appreciate the irony of this moment being made possible by Temple of Doom, one of the most deeply malevolent mainstream children’s films ever made
As cool as the Angel of Death in Hellboy 2 is, I would have rather we had an acceptance speech from Marcel the Shell.
I watched Everything… this morning and y’all are wild for making me think it was going to be wack. I’m never trusting any of you!
Happy to say I feel validated in thinking its the wackest, phoniest movie now that its won a best picture. Gonna be remembered as Green Book for mcu fans a decade from now.
I kinda get not liking the movie but the film Twitter people being the loudest about it are like a hairs breadth away from sounding exactly like anti woke culture Roman statue pfp guys who talk about like the death of high culture and how no one makes oil paintings anymore or something. Very bad scene. It’s like watching my generation turn into arch conservative reactionary freaks in real time. Plus it’s extra funny that the lineup this year means the films they have to get behind in opposition to it are The Fabelmans and Tár, both very entrenched elitist stuff in their own way
Tar’s probably a great movie, but it seems like it probably comes packed in an NPR tote bag. I’m too busy watching SOV nonsense to take time out for that.
my calling card for hating EEAAO includes the most annoying person I met in college having been an Emerson film student who was in their year and everything
that, and regretting each and every time I’ve even tried to be consciously less elitist in my own tastes
You know where your least favorite directors went to school.
you’ve known me for long enough to know that my anti-anti-elitism is painfully studied
i don’t think it’ll be at that level but as an eeaao liker i am fully convinced that in this cultural moment i am like a boomer who sincerely likes forrest gump and there will be a generational divide where people are like “how was this even popular” anyway legally by the transitive property dan harmon should be able to get at least one oscar nomination for the community movie
is this the first oscar-winning movie to have dildoes in it
the departed is the only other one i can think of
wait does priscilla have a dildo in it? i don’t remember one, just ping pong balls
were they crying over how horny they were for Tim Curry coz that’s really the only thing that seems to stick with anyone from that film
i don’t know that it should have won best picture, though i can’t think of a super strong case for any of the other nominees i’ve yet seen, and seven wins total seems a LITTLE much, but i AM glad Ke Huy Quan won his category, i keep thinking about his face during the WKW bit
Triangle of Sadness shoulda got some kind of award for the soundtrack at the very end
oh i don’t think i ever mentioned it itt or anywhere but i did finally watch EEAO this weekend, i had this brief moment of conviction where i was going to watch as many oscar nominated movies as possible but then work got in the way and that was the only one i could muster. oh well!
anyway, i liked it about exactly as much as i thought i would.* i still remain skeptical of Daniels as an entity, though you gotta hand it to them for being the most “best animated short”-looking guys to ever win so many big-time awards. i think they are at a crossroads now where they could either become, like, the McG of the MCU (or whatever) or actually continue to grow as filmmakers and do weirder and potentially more interesting stuff. i think the most interesting moment will be when/if they split and do shit on their own, love a spicy auteur pair breakup.
much more excited and hopeful about what Ke Huy Quan will do next. it’s a shame the timing of the new indiana jones movie doesn’t really line up with this, because the assholes who make those movies were too stupid to realize what an obvious move it would have been to bring him back before this movie put him in the limelight, and now harrison ford is unlikely to ever do another one of these again. but you never know!
he’s already signed on to do some marvel stuff, but at least it is Loki which still has the potential to be actually interesting. I hope it doesn’t just consume the rest of his life like it has for so many other people.
*i was pretty much fully on board very happily until the absolute end, and sort of resent the movie for the direction it takes in the last 5 minutes after doing a fakeout of a potentially much more interesting, true to life ending. in my version, joy would have actually just left when she said she was going to, rather than the last-minute about face after evelyn’s speech. and then the ending montage would have instead been evelyn and joy both simultaneously experiencing the next 20 years of their estrangement gradually thawing and becoming something approximating a normal parent/adult child relationship but without any resolution of the actual issues that drove them apart in the first place. but that’s just my own IMO opinion
Upon further consideration that may have been unfair. Everything… is more like La La Land for the MCU set
