I'd like to thank the Academy

Honking my honk itsa jokeman

i want retroactive oscars awarded to the international films made over the last thirty years which were infinitely better than the shit that has consistently won best picture.

i mean yeah, but i’m trying too be realistic

I threw shit on the ground I know the oscars are dumb but I’m really happy

sometimes something can be the bare minimum for them to get right and also a real achievement

yeah I like that

although bong joon ho mentioned twice how he’s going to get fucked up

I hope he lives through the night

although it wouldn’t be a bad way to go tbh

i’m not normally a conspiracy guy but i do feel like they cut out the bits where they showcase each film nominated for best picture specifically so that they could avoid saying anything about what parasite is about

or did this not happen? i don’t know the surprise eminem performance kind of erased most of my memory of the show

apropos of nothing, this is a very good example of why I like and trust the baffler’s editorship much more than I do jacobin’s lately

the baffler has been pretty consistently great since I started reading it regularly some months ago

also, burning! I should watch it again. what a film

interesting nobody resurrected this thread for 2 years, i guess nothing notable happened at the academy awards last year to inspire a lot of online conversation! maybe this year things will be different…

anyway, posting mainly because i realized the only movies i have seen this year that are nominated for anything are Turning Red and Glass Onion. i mean, i know the academy awards are not All Movies, but, trust me, i have barely seen any 2022 movies that weren’t nominated for oscars either.

if you had told this to me when i was like, roughly 16-25 years old i would have been incredulous. it’s wild to think of something that used to be like a core facet of my identity basically just doesn’t exist for me anymore. a lot of this is pandemic shit but… not all of it? wow. cinema is dead. (to me)

tip: be gay and watch it with your mom to really heighten things!

i will probably catch that one eventually, and i do want to see banshees of inisherin too. there are just challenges involved

I have seen most of them

some really good oscar-compatible stuff got robbed imo (3000 years, stars at noon, kimi, nope) but aftersun/fabelmans/banshees/bardo/elvis/top gun do deserve to win some stuff

nope is a crying shame. they should yank del toro’s win for shape of water and give it to peele retroactively

I caught some part of the show last year (?) at someone else’s place while picking up some furniture and saw respawn entertainment accept an award for the awful medal of honor VR game? then derealized until the commercial break

I threw an Oscar party once. Four girls showed up and they all had a food fight. Maybe that sounds like something from a parents’ movie but it was awful, they were all angry and made a big mess. The first thing thrown was a piece of squid sushi got stuck to one of their noses and it looked like she had a big snot hanging there. After half of them left I got pressured into watching Legend and I had to pretend I was having a good time cuz girls were crying. I don’t remember what won best picture that year. If I ever throw another Oscar party I’m only going to invite elderly gay men. Thank you for reading my Oscar memories.

God damn it evan we were living in a wonderful world where no one on this forum had to pretend to care about the shitty pointless Oscars and now look what you’ve done
