I can't believe today was a good play (Games you played today)

going into slap fight, i was expecting another xevious situation, where the japanese old videogames community have heavy nostalgia for a game that’s no fun at all to play but i was surprised: it is actually very good

I just had happened to kill enough mercenaries to make the pirates friendly to me before doing them. A decent faction trade, certainly less hassle than going against the cops.

I met the guy who charges $200k to make factions friendly to you. It makes me wonder if I kill enough confeds to make Kilrathi friendly and then talk to him, would I get all friendly factions except Retro? Or does he just reset your alignments to where they were at the beginning of the game

Finding it abnormally charming for a little adventurevania thing

good question, i’ll ask the CIC discord

edit: “yes it will make everyone but the Retros friendly.”

also apparently if you kill 6528 retros, the game dosen’t know how to handle it and rolls over the reputation back to being friendly

also also: the year that privateer takes place is 2669 nice

it’s been brought up a few times here recently so I decided to play the 2008 alone in the dark. I’m glad to find out it’s just as bizarre as I remember. maybe the most bizarre game I’ve personally witnessed. back when, I had only sat dumbstruck as I watched someone else play it. ps3 era games it seemed to me were getting more codified, so it was really strange to see this thing that seemed more like a experimental 2000 pc game nobody would of been able to run at the time in the form of a 2008 ps3 game.

In the beginning you are in this building that is just collapsing and on fire forever, with lots weird showoffy physics, and lots of weird non sequitur lines delivered out of nowhere by npcs that the camera always awkwardly lingers on for way too long afterwards. you can pick up or move around lots of junk and hold the junk towards a flame to set it on fire etc., you have to do a lot of bad physics puzzles, like put a fire extinguisher on a piece of a debris that a rope is attached to, then jump on the rope so the debris comes flying up and launches the fire extinquisher to your level. even though you can climb down to where the extinguisher is, you can’t climb with it or just set it on something that your arms can reach above you. there’s a part where your climbing around on the outside of the building and a car rockets up from the ground to hit some things next to you several stories up. you keep heading up in this clearly unstable structure instead of trying to go down

when you get injured your legs get cut up and you have to look down at them and have a health spray to spray on your legs to heal. there was a part where I was injured and it had a timer until I bleed to death or bandaged my arm. I assume this is a mechanic not a specific thing for this one part of the game but who knows. you look in your jacket to check and equip from your inventory. you can switch between third person and first person and you have a button to blink your eyes for first person. the first part of the game your eyes keep drying out and you have to blink every second. the game keeps switching to third person every time you stumble around and some destructible scenery has to show off, which has been every few steps so far, but there are fixed camera angles in certain places when you’re in third person that make trying to do some of the running and jumping a nightmare.

you can drive cars in this game. the first car you drive you have to pick up something to smash open a window to unlock it, then you can hotwire it or turn the dome light on so you can see the key on the visor. which I could of swore resident evil 6 ripped off exactly? I beat a deadite to death with a frying pan. then I had to pick up a chair and hold it to a fire then hold the flaming chair to the deadites dead body.

if any of this sounds amusing or interesting it’s been pretty miserable to play, with a controller on pc anyway, maybe with mouse and keyboard it’s better but it forces me to use my controller if it’s plugged in and sometimes when I unplug my controller it screws up my bindings in emulators so I don’t feel like doing that. and moving and climbing on things feels so sluggish. I’d at least like to get to the part I remember, where you are just driving a car through central park for ages while bats or something cling to it.

watch this and know you have as much context for it as I did having played the preceding sections of the game:

this was made by french people, obviously. where else would this mix of early to mid 90s european adventure game insanity with late 90s quantic dream bullshit could of come from. the developers don’t seem to have done much else but some racing games.

Lol, I can infer from that specific number that killing a retro decreases your faction rep by “5”, it’s stored in a 16-bit integer, and at the start of the game your rep with them is -130.

I wonder if friendly retros have any dialogue. Probably easier to test that by hacking the savefile instead of blowing up Talons for days

when you’re holding something you move the right stick around to swing it. so I was trying to cock my baseball bat back and hit the car window just right. for some reason with the angle I could only damage the rear window so I had to get in the back then climb forward to the front seat.

I love it. It’s my favourite game of its kind. I played the 3DS version, cave story 3D (in my opinion it was gorgeous)

Manuel Samuel gave Death the voice of an idiot gangbanger “dressed like a douchebag for some reason.” I uninstalled it immediately. Thanks twitch prime.

Super glad you like it!!

I hope you’re collecting and watching those film strips because despite the children’s book aesthetic, the game will not let you progress if you have not fully assimilated the differences between blussers, spenkhakkers and wums

Oh jeez somehow I own this across like three platforms and I really want to try it

I mean try it. The jokes were hack and then went to hack to offensive and hack.

In final tally, my total death count before starting Chapter 9 was 7,328. And that’s getting all strawberries, doing A, B, and C-sides, getting I think 3 golden strawberries, AND also some dicking around here and there. Also, the max on any one chapter was Summit B, at 854.

Total for chapter 9 was 2,791

final fantasy viii came out 20 years ago, and you could not skip the opening fmv. you still can’t skip the opening fmv in the newest release! what the fuck! it also didn’t save my settings. and it look so strange to have these super smooth like, high res psp-looking models over these stretched to shit, grainy pre-rendered backgrounds. is somebody neural networking this shit?

katamari damacy reroll is rad, but i still get stuck on the stage with the gin and tonic and red roses song, which i think is the worst song. i wish i got stuck on the stage with the moon and the prince.

Divinity Original Sin 2, for the last couple. Chose to main the Lizard Prince, who looks down on everyone, and promptly met/recruited the undead fellow who regards the Prince + his lost Empire as minor footnotes (if worthy of even that) in the long life of skellington. Then this crab, who considers herself superior for having shell, not mere skin. It’s implied that she was brought to this island, like all the more conventionally sapient residents, for the same “treatment” as everyone else. Like, the bureaucracy of Source Hunters saw this magical crab and instead of just killing it, threw it on a ship with the other prisoners then deposited it to scuttle the beaches of their high fantasy prison colony.

All I can do is talk to her! I don’t know if she’ll ever come up again or lead anywhere! It’s very silly, and typifies why these games have maybe the only not-grating writing in modern text-heavy RPGs.

Also the characterisation of all the many poor, abused, stupid attack dogs I can talk to with Pet Pal has made me feel more genuine emotion than I can recall from a game since ever :expressionless:
