Witcher 3, when it’s working, works like a TV show. Gerald is a sturdy enough character and ‘detective mystery’ is a strong enough frame which still drives towards learning about the world and the people that they can run the template over and over and over again to better results than, say, Mass Effect or Red Dead or a modern Witcher-based Assassin’s Creed, which either don’t have a strong enough main character or a developed enough viewpoint on the world to allow for novelty that feels self-consistent.
I think they strive to be comforting like television in structure and character but novel in relation to our world (historical analogs, monster/crime metaphors and the use of fantasy to process unexplained trauma kept my interest). Read it like a semi-serialized '90s show like Xena and it works best.

I just played a stupid MnMs game on my DS flashcart and it is a hate crime. I mean it. It is about the candies banding together to kill a misshapen peanut that was deemed to ugly and unworthy of becoming Candy. Now play bad breakout.

Started playing Amnesia: The dark descent.
Played for a couple of hours, for now, so my impressions are very immature and will most likely change. It might be interesting and I like how the bits of story are presented.
I don’t like the gameplay right now. Simple puzzles and abused ideas, half hidden using a layer of horror. What’s the general opinion of the game, here?

yeah treating witcher like a xena spinoff instead of Serious Adult Fantasy makes it 100% more tolerable and I didn’t really enjoy the 3rd game until I started looking at it that way. I still don’t think Witcher 3 is as good as everybody else does but Gerald the pulp fantasy private eye made me genuinely laugh like a dozen times in the 40 hours I dumped into it and I love him.

i could never get over how much Geralt’s expressions and body language constantly reminded me of Xavier: Renegade Angel. i kept expecting him to randomly sniff the air and have his voice echo out on every other word

I think the general opinion on Amnesia around here is somewhat negative, but I enjoyed it a lot. If you’re going to play just one of Frictional’s games, though, it should be SOMA. (Opinions are divided on that one as well but I think it’s one of the best games in years.)

Got Xbox Live to play some games with a old buddy and upgraded to Game Pass for a year for $1.
Been having a lot of fun with Forza Horizons 4 and Bloodstained. Quite the deal!
Been playing a lot of Lonely Mountains: Downhill, recently too. It’s on Game Pass but I had already bought it on Steam previous to that. It’s very relaxing and super fun to control. It reminds me a lot of Marble Madness weirdly enough.
