Wow, guess I just have to become a Gran Turisman.
gran turismo has always been so fucking sick
Language is weird.
Expecting soon to hear people describing masterful things as “like diarrhea.”
“Is… is that good?”
“Yeah, man, it’s so sick and smooth!”
That game is like 100 hours long I wouldn’t worry about a second playtrhough.
i get the feeling tim has probably done that a few times already
since y’all are talkin about gran turismo itt
you can drive a skyline super silhouette in gran turismo 2 and it’s possibly the coolest car in the world
amusingly, it’s also part of an optimized money grinding route from a fresh game where you start with an R32 Skyline and upgrade it enough to win the Silhouette Skyline which will let you easily repeatedly win the Speed 12 that can be sold for 500k credits in the US version
lol; people caring about cars
what’s next; sports? real estate?
I didn’t even notice this wasn’t the car thread
That’s a good title for a thread that isn’t about cars.
I got the notion in my head some years back that I should eventually play the original Tomb Raider II and the nuevo Tomb Raider II back to back to see how things changed between then and now, or something like that. Honestly it was just a thought that sounded neat in my head.
Anyways I started the original Tomb Raider II today and yikes! For the record I played the original several years back and found it enjoyable enough even if it was “dated” in a few areas, so it’s not like the fact that II is also dated in similar ways is turning me off. It’s just that through the first two stages it feels like they dropped almost every strength that the original had (an honest to god 3d take on Prince of Persia platforming, genuine enthusiasm in how to build a level that takes advantage of polygonal 3d space) in order to double down on its weaknesses (gunfights, particularly against people who can shoot back at you).
Worse the second level is Venice, so you have to get between many places of interest via either swimming or riding a boat, neither of which you can shoot while doing. Of course the canals often have enemies with guns along the side who will at times notice you immediately from a distance and shoot with perfect aim as you unavoidably lose most of your health. Venice is also very open in design and nothing flows together, the final bit is on a timer but doesn’t really let you know this fact.
The end of the first stage has a big reaction-time gauntlet of dangers that the game isn’t really built for as well.
It honestly feels like it was made by a different team entirely, a much worse one. I’m gonna give it a few more stages to see if there is anything of worth in there but my first impression is that it suffers from one of the biggest drop off in quality I can recall between a game and its sequel.
Played some Rune Factory 4 at Pax East:
Rune Factory 4
For some reason, I decided to wait in line for the demo of Rune Factory 4. I’ve never played the series, but, I adore farming games, and Stardew consumed my life for like three months. My brother played the second one and seemed to think it was good.
It takes a full 20 minutes as I watch this woman in front of me building her farm from the ground up. Looks fun enough, but I’m sorta just like, blown away that there’s a line of 5 people and the booth staff are just watching her playing the game for this wildly long amount of time.
She eventually moves on and I try it out. The guy who’s showing me the game doesn’t really know anything about it, but, he’s up-front about it, and we goofed around about it a bit.
Me: “How do I get to my farm?”
Him: “Go through that door.”
I start using a hoe to till the land. I do it a few times, then stop, my character starting vacantly straight ahead.
Him: “Done farming huh?”
Me: “Just seems… like… futile.”
Him: “Futile.”
Me: “Yeah I guess, since I’m not gonna be here for more than a few minutes, probably not worth laying the foundation to a farm.”
He nods.
I leave the farm and walk downward, through a different door. There is a massive fucking dragon there.
Me: “Uhh!” I notice it’s not an enemy, “Is this dragon a friend??” I go up to it and talk to it.
Him: “Yeah you can date it, it’s amazing.”
Me: “I can???”
Him: “Nah I don’t know.”
We laugh a bit.
I go down and leave a castle.
This anime girl gives me a massive cube of bread??
I eat the entire thing, a block larger than my head, in a single instant.
MASSIVE letters appear telling me have have done something truly tremendous. I have unlocked a great power.
I say nothing to her and just leave.
Him: “So yeah you can just go and battle monsters out here.”
I run up to the first monster I see, a wooloo. It is adorable. It makes no move to attack me.
Me: “I don’t think I want to fight this thing. It’s adorable.”
Him: “There is a way to get pets in this game. I don’t know how to do that, though.”
Me: “Maybe I can feed it?”
I move to the next screen, wooloo just stares at me.
I give it a plant, a little heart appears. It just sits there.
Him: “Hey, Jim!” He gets this other booth guy to come over. “How do you get pets in this game?”
Jim: “So, there’s a specialty glove you have to get, that lets you pet animals, and if you can survive long enough, it’ll become your pet. You can ride them and use them on your farm.”
Me: “Nice.”
They then gave me a pin. Pretty good demo.
There are some stellar levels near the end of II but yeah, it’s overall much weaker and not worth sitting through in 2020. Do the level skip and play the Temple of Xian if you’re curious. I will always go to bat for the original and the fourth game, despite their many flaws.
Picked up some capcom stuff in the steam sale that i’d been holding out on.
Monster hunter world: It seems more bloated than tri or freedom unite which are my reference points. The hud overwhelms with information which you typically amassed via explorafion in the earlier games. Endlessly collecting dung and saliva samples to increase a meaningless bar to better track monsters seems like more busywork than just throwing a paintball.
The walking volcano boss event i just passed was a very low moment. Not sure if ill press on beyond here.
Resident evil 2: Went straight in on hardcore which was probably a mistake. The boss fights near the end were agonising and just felt like time sinks. Otherwise the game is stellar. It wont surpass the original in my eyes due to some of the mid game padding but probably the best modern title ive played in the last couple of years.
Unless they changed things for the Switch release (very possible!), you cannot date the dragon. She is also a pivot point for the “hidden” third arc of the main storyline, which most people will not realize exists because it is triggered randomly after the second arc.
My game on the 3DS has not triggered this event. I’ve had sleepovers with all the bachelors and all the bachelorettes, another two random events, but not this REAL IMPORTANT one.
Nah, you definitely can’t date it, the guy was just goofin’.
It goes without saying, of course, being able to date that dragon would’ve been a goddamn system-selling feature.
Yeah the Zorah Magdaros fights are the pits, I got it down to a tight 10 minute thing iirc when I was grinding to make those armor/weapon sets, but I only ground because it was so easy to pick up for 30 minutes and then run off to do other stuff. I think that is definitely the worst mission of the game. I also ignored the flies 90% of the time.
After ages on and off, finally beat La Mulana. I’m sure tackling say 90% of its insanely cryptic puzzles and low bounce platform-combat, without the use of extensive guides/faqs delivers a singular deeeeeep satisfaction. Maybe equivalent to a dozen note requiring games of my childhood. But the 60+ hours that might’ve asked, I didn’t want to spend combing every single screen of the ruins so fuggit. Heavily guided the latter half.
The penultimate Tiamat was probably my favorite boss/guardian. Not gonna lie, had most of it down easily until the last phase laser constantly tripped me up…then I observed someone else’s iframe brilliance. Recorded just a few minutes cuz I knew this’d be the run.
There’s a video of a guy who beat La Mulana without any hint
260 hours lol
it’s clear that it wasn’t a miraculous fulfilling experience, he sort of resents the game for being this obtuse but was too stubborn to stop
Personally I’d have guessed that finishing this game without any hint would have taken 1000+ hours
