I can't believe today was a good play (Games you played today)

I played one brief session of it and then I could never muster the interest to pick it up again so I wound up bailing on it. But maybe when I’m properly in the mood for a game like that I’ll try again.

I didn’t like the writing or the aesthetic all that much, though.

that’s what got me through the kind of meh first hour or so of this game.

Honestly I keep going back to Sonic Adventure as a reference for this sort of earnest too-cool-for-school attitude that, for whatever reason, really works for me.

emphatically do not share or even remotely comprehend all this love for Sunset Overdrive, but then again I’m a self-confessed Scrooge whose guardian angel’s nose is two sizes too small, so perhaps the problem’s on my end.

finally managed to clear Chamber Six: Bullet Hell in Enter the Gungeon and immediately reset the save file afterwards

I’m going to be spending a long time trying to decompress why I actually like this game when generally the “too clever by half” and “self aware” and “quirky cast” and “lol video games” things would immediately make me turn off a game.

On an xbone controller you can enable xbox game bar so you press a guide button to bring up the xbox game bar menu then select screenshot.

Or you install xbox game bar and then can use a stupid button combination like Windows + Ctrl + K to take screenshots.

But also game pass games are just exe’s on your harddrive so you could launch them through steam? Can you take screenshots through Steam on non-steam games?

I got the Rondo of Blood PS4 port and I’ve gotten to level 2. This game is really hard! The music and art is pretty great but I’m not sold on the gameplay yet. Feels kind of awkward to me, jumping around hoping my weird whip will connect with wiggly ravens who keep dive bombing me for massive damage. What makes this game the classic that it is?

Might not help that the only Castlevania I’ve spent significant time with is Symphony of the Night. I love that game and I kind of keep wanting every other Castlevania game to just be that.

i don’t think you’ll have to try too hard to like it - there’s no real complicated reason for it being good, just: great music, pacing, constant stream of novelty, and a surprising amount of secrets and branching paths in some of the levels which really hit that SMB3 “endless possibility” nerve for me

Pre and Post symphony castlevania night as well be two different series. They have remarkably little in common.

Like Symphony is all about leeway and experimentation and fucking around, but the older ‘Vanias are all about learning and adapting to the situations you are confronted by. There’s usually more ways to deal with a situation than it seems like at first, but it’s still not going to let you just do whatever.

Castlvania also requires a high level of intentionality compared to many contemporary action games. It’s like a fighting game: whatever you do is is going to have a windup, the actual action, and then cool down. So you can get punished by the game for trying to go too fast.

I think the crows are there to impress this upon you, because I remember having a lot of trouble with them until I worked out their actually (IIRC) pretty deterministic behavior patterns, and the exact window of time to hit them.

If this sort of thing doesn’t sound fun to you, it’s cool! But it’s why CV1, Bloodlines, and Rondo are three of my all time faves. They have a distinct vibe and flow that is different from pretty much anything else.

Y’all are getting me hype to get further and see how the game opens up! Do you have any tips on how to get better at it? Are there any hidden moves or techniques I need to know about? I figured out that there’s a dedicated button to shoot ALL your special weapon ammo at once, which is hilarious to me.

Rondo is super old school in that it’s all about practice. once you can predict enemy behavior and know the wind-up time for attacks, it will all gel. the game will become too easy, even.

but yeah sub weapons are key; the Axe and Cross are my preferences and do good damage. double tapping jump makes Richter do a back flip, which is occasionally useful. and make sure to hit walls to find the strategically-helpful meat.

i know tim always made a big deal about how if you keep holding the attack button, richter will be able to walk backward while continuing to face an enemy, and that doing so supposedly shaves a few milliseconds off your turnaround time. i can’t say I’ve ever been perceptive enough to notice, but it does feel good not to have to turn around again for the second attack, and it can get you into more of a “zone” for dealing with enemies who take a lot of hits

I was impressed when I finally noticed that the perfect opposite is true—holding down the jump button lets you change direction without moving.

You can actually swing the whip twice in one jump, once on the way up and once on the way down. This is useful for enemies that take a lot of hits like those golem guys in stage 1.

You can tweak your jump on the way up, and move in the opposite direction midair at like half speed, but on the way down you cant move at all, you can only change direction!
