concurrently playing both final fantasy adventure and trials of mana (seiken densetsu 3) on switch.
final fantasy adventure is massively underrated and I can’t believe I never played it until now. I kind of wish the rest of the series was more like this game, warts and all.
I feel like sd3 is kind of underwhelming but I think the “official” localization is just kind of awkward and dry and uses an ugly font, and I feel like this is a game whose visuals really benefit from CRT filtering. I compared playing it on switch vs a rip of the official port on retroarch and it just looks/feels much better this way, but both versions feel kind of flat compared to the original, much older fan translation.
sd3 is notably more polished/balanced and has nominally more interesting mechanics than sd2, but partly as a result of that polish the game feels kind of more predictable and boring. it’s gorgeous and has beautiful music but it’s just sort of lacking the sense of wonder which pretty much is the sole thing that redeems sd2 from its own sloppy mechanics, translation, worldbuilding, and pacing. so I’m kind of torn, maybe the entire series is trash that people only like because of the music and rose tinted glasses? is there a prevailing hivemind opinion about seiken densetsu over here?
The structure is too circular and there are too many people in the story, it doesn’t travel to fantastical settings as often as would be good for its depth. Secret of Mana worked best when it threw an out-there tileset and music track at you and you zoned into it for a while, ignoring the stilted action mechanics in favor of aesthetics.
Seiken Densetsu 3 has like 5 too many castle levels
I’m a pretty big MGS fan and I haven’t been able to commit to MGSV because I was also a big 24 fan and it just sounds like Jack Bauer the whole time. It would have been cool if Kiefer’s dub had been an optional bonus. Or even better, just give him a whole other character.
*I also feel for David Hayter. Pretty strange to be the iconic voice of one of gaming’s biggest characters-----and then not get asked back for a new game.
yeah I feel like I’m just going through the same three palette swapped areas fighting slightly different variants of the same enemy types over and over again
the class system is neat and provides a little bit of variety at least.
I really feel like this is this entirely because kojima has an enormous boner for kiefer sutherland. he isn’t bad as punished snake, it just doesn’t make any sense. but honestly with all the plot problems that MGSV has this is kind of the least of them
Apparently he kinda ghosted Stefanie Joosten (Quiet) after all their enthusiasm over V’s production and release.
Seemed like she’d be a shoe-in during the formation of nu-Kojipro. Kinda cold behavior on his part, a bit coarse asking for her involvement on a role then not at least following up eventually to say he chose differently. Given all the love a few years back, a pretty forgetful/impersonal biz habit.
Well yeah everyone knows his flex and how casting rolls, all the public facing stuff a few years back and her description would suggest it was just surprisingly incommunicado for her.
I mean it’s a setup using their likeness most of all then va and mocap, he knew what he was getting last time…she was literally “quiet” so if her acting chops aren’t up to snuff, sounds like he’s forgetting how important it may have been to the other person or doesn’t know how to message it. Love most of his stuff anyways but sounds like bad form least from the outside
I liked this game a lot when i was younger and i think i like it even more now. the battle system is a crappy, poorly balanced ATB knockoff but everything else is endearingly low-budget and cute. i sincerely love the art style, the character models are really appealing
i basically stole this character’s name/design for one of my original the characters do not steal lol
the music is nothing too amazing but it’s pleasant and catchy in a way that’s not unlike default RPG Maker music. though in keeping with the bad combat, the main battle theme might be one of the worst ive ever heard (at least the boss themes are all pretty good!)
there’s a part where you are embroiled in a kid gang war and the game plays a strange joke where it looks like you’re going to have to do the most basic-ass Sokoban puzzle, except instead you just hit X and watch the main character do it himself
the translation is actually pretty bad and awkward, though it arguably sorta fits the tone. the story begins light and silly but i remember it going in some weirdly thoughtful, existential directions later on?? I think this might secretly be a good B-game
Much credit to her for being super nice about it. There were a few moments in that video where the other people were obviously trying to see if she would get pissy about it. She stays very collected.
Went to the beach and back to my brother-in-law’s parent’s beach house where his brother talked videogames with me, showed me his Switch, got excited when I frothed over Picross and dug up a 3DS to show me Picross 3D. Are there any other games like it?
I always say it Pic-ross, but I have no idea. Looking at katakana, it is Pikurosu here, though that doesn’t cleat it up really, aside from ruling out pic-cross, just because the double hard c sound could be indicated, but isn’t.
Everyone reacts to Old Snake like he is already dead and even with generous use of the skip feature these cutscenes are too fucking long. I think NATO setting up to shoot Ocelot took 5 minutes of my life.
Also curious what stealth looked like in Chapter 4 because all the little ball guys just made me give up and pull out a machine gun and run.
