Has anyone here built any Volks Five Star Story or Vitual On kits? I was thinking of picking some up but I can’t find any directions. It sounds like some Volks F.S.S. stuff is heavy duty For Adults model kit stuff while some others might be more like snap-together gunpla, but I’m not sure. I also can’t figure out what assembly on the Virtual On kits are like.

I’ve always wanted to get a F.S.S. kit but I can’t find much information on what exactly is feasible for a dude who just builds HGs.

Everything I’ve heard about the FSS kits are they’re big huge spindly pieces of resin that require a ton of glue and painting.

If that’s your jam, go ahead (It might be mine!), but I’ve seen one in person and it was definitely one of the most complex mecha kits I’ve ever seen.

Yeah, this is the description I ran into when googling around, but I can’t tell if all kits are like this or not. Sure sounds… fun! I guess!

From what I’ve seen some of the Virtual-On kits are super sticker heavy. Like,

Others don’t seem too bad though. I haven’t built any of them. If you can’t find reviews I recommend looking up kits on https://www.1999.co.jp. They usually have photos of the runners and any stickers it may come with.

Volks FSS kits are incredibly hardcore. I have not built one. My sister got me one as a gift 2 years ago and I was absolutely floored and excited but then I opened the box and was just like “…do you still have the receipt?”

You will need lots of paint and glue and the plastic does not look as high quality as Bandai’s or Kotobukiya’s. One or two of the pieces in my box had already broken off the runners. After they’re built their articulation is very limited.

They’re the coolest looking robots but I believe every available kit requires much, much more work than any Bandai kit. When I brought it back to Gundam Planet the guy who owned the place (I think) said he didn’t blame me, and if you want FSS you want to go resin, which is a whole other kind of hassle that I am not prepared to deal with.

The completed ones I’ve seen in person are lovely though.

Dang.

I’m curious if this is a new line because it’s advertised as “Adopting the new technology established in the semi-finished model “ABSOMEC (Absolute Mechanism)”, the model is designed to be an easy-to-assemble and novel movable model.” I don’t see these on Hobby Search. Maybe I should take the dive and find out.

I think I found a walkthrough of another kit in this series and it kinda looks more human buildable?

There’s quite a bit of excess flash on those pieces, damn. I can’t deal with that, I started building these things cuz they were easy and relaxing.

I don’t think the new Volks kits are out yet but this site will probably have photos and Japanese reviews soon

They don’t paint or sand their builds so even though I can’t read the text I still get lots of good info just from the pics

Found it. Yeah, I’m out. I don’t think I have the skill level for painting and gluing to make this money worth it. The detail is crazy though. Someday…

my friend builds volks kits but they all take em like months and you basically need to treat it like sculpture for things to turn out well
