Hardcore Will Never Die But Hardware Will

I think that their heat was more spread out across their surface area and therefore less noticeably hot.

Modern TVs have a hotspot.

I looked up a random 24ā€ crt, a sony WEGAKV24FS120 - 165W / 275 in^2 = 0.6W/in^2

A 77ā€ LG C4 OLED - 195W / 2536 in^2 = 0.08W/in^2

165W for 24" seems like a lot but I guess power consumption grows almost exponentially with screen size (just like the weight lol).

My 13" CRT TV uses 36W and my 17" CRT monitor 68W so it seems about right. Makes me feel better about vowing to myself never to get a CRT above 20" again.

My 50" Sony LCD TV only draws about 50W. Maybe because I turned down the backlight, but it still makes me appreciate new technology.

I appreciate the weight and space benefits of LCDs but my triple monitor setup will never be as cool as it was back in the day when I had my 40 pound Sony trinitron

brains trust, do you think it would be possible to build a PC with equivalent power to a PS5 for a comparable price by like the end of the year or whenever DS2 comes out there? asking for a husband

honestly you gotta cut a lot of weird corners to get there these days, I would probably recommend a console or I’ll get into weird ebay gpu sourcing

it basically hinges on if you can source a 6700XT or similarly performing GPU for 150-200 USD because the rest of the computer can easily fit in a 2-300 USD price profile

The cursed answer is wait for it to come out on mac and play it on a mini

I was disappointed to find that there’s no minisforum board with a good-enough notebook CPU. Here’s a list of new parts, to which you could add a used 2070 Super and 512GB Samsung PM9A1 SSD. It’s hard to say that’s better than just getting a console but if you need a PC it’s doable.

wait i have an M2 mini would that cut it

uhh like i said cursed!! the first game took over 4 years to launch on mac.The M2 mini can run that a little better than the PS4. If you want to play DS2 near its PC launch i think you’re going to have to build a frankenstein tower. Though we haven’t seen the specs yet, maybe they’ll target steam deck performance.

honestly after seeing how the Mac OS port of AC Shadows turned out, I don’t have a ton of faith in Macs running anything that isn’t an iOS game well (hey let me tell you, my M2 pro mini rips ass through phone games)

I would also save up an extra hundred or so bucks and commit to AM5 so you’re not buying into a (admittedly good) dead platform

you’re all successfully convincing me to see if anyone wants to lend us a ps5 / keeping an eye on marketplace, bless youse

gaming laptops are kind of an impossible dream I would never want to invest much into, especially at the sticker price. but my company just sold off their stock of razer blade laptops that have a 3080 and an i9 in them for less than $400, and I was pretty pleased to nab one of those today.

Yeah if you can find something via corporate waste that’s pretty much the only way to get ā€œPS5 equivalent PCā€ for ā€œPS5 pricesā€.

this reminder that i still have avowed installed comes at a great time, because i need to free up some hard drive space in order for steam’s game recording feature to reenable itself

After having nothing but old hand me down computers my whole life* that were really only meant for web browsing and watching videos, I finally got myself a gaming laptop and I’m blown away. This is what life is all about I guess. I’m so impressed I didn’t realize computers had advanced this much. I don’t think i’ve ever even seen a display higher than 60hz. And I got what is considered a budget machine so I can’t even imagine what stronger PCs are like.

I feel a little embarrassed about all these years I wanted to try and use computers/Windows less (because of what I do for work) and bought 3 game consoles, a phone that is a little too nice for me, and various other equipment and doodads. When I really just needed a new laptop that could do it all. I just played around emulating demon’s souls (asia ver.) and bangai-o HD (no slowdown when you shoot a 4x1000 missile combo :frowning: ). So I definitely have a lot to do now. Maybe I will become a streamer lol.

Having never used a laptop with a discrete GPU, I thought that it just meant the iGPU would be shut off. But it seems to be running both GPUs at the same time and passing things back and forth between them to save power I guess, which is a little mysterious to me. I tried to set it up to use the discrete GPU as much as possible.

Windows 11 is not too bad or too different, I was able to turn a lot of stuff off with that ShutUp program, I even moved my taskbar icons to the left and brought back the old context menu. You can still dodge the MS account requirement too. I found out that the Windows 10 extended support for consumers requires an MS account, which isn’t surprising but that was kind of why I decided to buy this now.

*I did have a beast of a Gateway from 1999 with a 3dfx card and other nice specs. Perfect for half life 1 etc. That was the first time my parents bought a computer and the last time they ever bought something that wasn’t the cheapest possible option.
