Hardcore Will Never Die But Hardware Will

Lol the other solutions are just thicker bezels or nostril shot webcams so checks out

Tbh I’m glad we’re getting extra pixels. I blackout the top bar most of the time anyways.

The display is still 16:10 below the notch, they added lines above and hiked up the menu bar (eg the macbook air display is 2560x1664)

hey let me tell you about how I was sent a DCP that our server (Dolby IMS3000) refused to ingest because it had two electronic sub tracks (the dialogue track was mixed English/foreign so it played with soft subs but also came with a closed captioning track, which I looked at and it’s not actually CC because it doesn’t have SFX/music transcription but I ain’t the law) and I literally hooked up our CRU reader to a computer and pulled the DCP into DCPomatic and re-packaged it before remembering the festival had a tech partner and made them do the same thing (because then I’m no longer liable if it blows up)

Ohhhhh yes! I did know you did this sort of stuff.

The film fest we were a venue for folded this year and I was so relieved I didn’t have to spend a month herding cats with all the submission files.

I’m lucky, the fests I deal with here in DC have settled on DCP as the deliverable and just funnel stuff through CineSend or… god, what’s the other platform. anyway, some ProRes masters or mp4s still sneak through occasionally and having the grunt around to do 20-30+ fps encoding on hand for 2k is nice

4k though… 4k encoding is “I will set this up to go overnight and remote in to make sure DCPomatic didn’t explode after 5-6 hours”

there’s actually a guy who has made a CUDA J2K encoder but it’s 500 bucks on top of hunting down a recent RTX card and no one’s giving me a thousand bucks to save 10-20 hours a year

I mean, the fact that there’s hardware FFV1 now upstream in ffmpeg because of the vulkan APIs means there will probably be free J2K before too long

also please link me to this paid J2K CUDA implementation because it will be useful context for a talk I’m giving

I had misremembered my math because it’s 250/yr and I was going with a license and trying to scoop up a 2080ti or something stupid and got to 500

why would plex suddenly start stuttering on every file now, I will never have peace in this life

I guess the plex box needed a wired connection now despite working fine wirelessly up til now. red spectacles was the first thing I watched when I got my new receiver and it worked fine but now it can’t go a minute without the audio dropping out. weird

my smart TV (which runs regular android VLC) has gone back and forth between firmware updates as to whether it’s willing to stream anything from my Nas over about 30mbit and I know it’s not a connection strength limitation per se, I think it’s some interaction between the wireless driver and the video hwdec and the android power saving app layer that essentially gets toggled in the backend every six months because no one is regression testing this use case

Funny story, the GOG version of Heroes of Might and Magic only comes with the DOS version as included on the 1997 HoMM Compendium CD. However, much like the second game, there is a Windows 95 version… on the very same CD, even. GOG just chose not to include it as an extra like they did with HoMM2 Win95. I tracked down the Windows 95 version, but it was a bin/cue that WinCDEmu would not load because of the redbook audio tracks. I could’ve converted it to an ISO but as parker pointed out, you lose the audio that way. So the moral of the story is that if you want redbook audio in old games sometimes you just need to use alcohol 120% still

with a 2023 avr and 2024 oled tv it takes playing death stranding all day to heat up my room compared to the two hours it took a 2008 plasma and avr. progress

I can’t remember, did CRTs heat up the way LCD TVs do?

in my experience, not as badly? my Vizio is basically like a portable heater, which is really noticeable in the summer, but my JVC D-Series doesn’t really put out any discernible temperature

i ended up getting the refurbished 13" macbook air m4 from apple that megabat linked. pretty happy with it. the battery life is nuts. already plugged an audio interface and started recording with it. didn’t need to install a single driver or configure anything lol. plugged the mackie profx into a usb-a-to-c adapter and it just immediately worked.

i got that education pro apps bundle from apple that has logic and fcp and other stuff for $200 USD. they don’t verify that you are in education… apple if you’re reading this, i’m a student of art, i’m a student of history, i’m a student of love. please don’t arrest me

Thanks for the tip on that bundle!

Doesn’t that just depend on the amount of power they draw?

Possibly! I just know I always noticed my newer TVs heating up the space behind them and I don’t quite recall that with CRTs
