I think it’s a failure of art direction over tech. They’re still trying to figure out the tone of Halo in a post-gritty-warshooter environment and instead of the hazy fantasy look of Destiny or the JJ Abrams gleaming look of Halo 4 they’re trying the soft look of Overwatch. Strategically I get it but it’s so overplayed it doesn’t inspire much.

To my eye it doesn’t look like Overwatch either. Overwatch has much clearer lines, contrast and an opinionated palette. I agree it’s an art direction problem but it’s as much a question of internal consistency as of choosing the right style. That blue Elite armor in front of the brown mountain is a grotesque color combination, for example.

The simple material work on skin, rocks, and plastics, the low-contrast color and lighting choices and color within objects and focus on colorful characters over color-simplified backdrops are the choices I see that follow from the reasoning of Overwatch, Fortnite, and the like. Another good comparison point is Apex Legends which is following the same strategic logic for the art style but doing a better job of adapting it to their tone, or, I should say, they have a clearer tone they want to hit, so they’re able to aim for it.
After saving humanity/all life in the universe multiple times over the course of several games you’d think G.I. Spadroon The Master Chief would get a promotion? Some sort of path out of the NCO life/pay grade? Special Warfare Officers still go out in the field and shoot people in the head, commit various war crimes, atrocities, bases for Clint Eastwood movies, etc.
I guess when you live your whole life in a Navy-owned suit that sucks you off once per Earth Fortnight your material needs/goals are pretty minimal.

With Halo Infinite, we’re now able to give players more freedom than ever before to explore a sprawling Halo ring. This demo shows off just a small section of the open and expansive world we’ve crafted to deliver an epic Master Chief experience. The scale of the environment accessible to players is several times larger than that of the last two Halo games combined with opportunities to discover hidden rewards and assault Banished fortifications in brand new ways.
The campaign demo showcases two pieces of new equipment that the Master Chief will be able to deploy on the battlefield – a portable shield and a grappling hook. The “Drop Wall” is a fast deploying cover that can be used to fend off enemy fire or even deflect a grenade as we saw in the demo. The “Grappleshot” opens up new traversal options while also providing new ways to engage enemies. Get up close and personal by grappling into an enemy for a satisfying melee, pull a Fusion Coil to yourself and throw it at your target, or grapple to a ledge to rain fire on enemies below. This new equipment, along with various new weapons, open up more freedom and flexibility for players to showcase their own playstyles. And yes, these new additions to the sandbox will also carry over to multiplayer, however they’ll function a bit differently as equipment items that can be picked up on the map. We look forward to talking more about multiplayer details soon.

Halo Infinite has been built entirely on our new Slipspace Engine, which was designed from the ground up to serve as the foundation for the future of the franchise. The technical enhancements of the Slipspace Engine are too extensive to truly get into here,
…etc etc,so they built the brand new engine, hopefully will have a lot of improvements under the hood, should be breakable for speedruns in fun new ways, guess that’s where all the graphics went
gears of war 5 had the same lousy open world shit as this is gonna, it’s Microsoft’s house style now and it’s going to add approximately nothing to the game just like it did there. this game doesn’t look that impressive honestly. enemy AI looks awful, the new guns are all featureless grey military cubes, and the lighting is typical 343 awful. also for a company obsessed with accessibility maybe put some subtitles on the screen for your fucking unintelligible speech alien. i am so fucking tired of fighting the covenant races, a less cowardly developer would actually try to introduce new antagonists but we’re killing elites again I guess. it feels really by the numbers which is how this series has felt since Reach anyway. my heart still lies at the memorial from the end of halo 3 I guess

now I have never played Halo 4 or 5 but wouldn’t a ‘Cortana is hunting you like a bad lover’ plot make a whole lot more sense? If that brute speech was Cortana pledging that no matter where you went, no matter what identical Halo superweapon you crashed into, she would track you down, she would never let you hide…
