HALO

That’s awesome! Yeah I never got remotely as good at 2 much less 3. Just all the time spent, memorizing the maps, timing the powerup spawns, and that ridiculous pistol. So fun. It helped that my roommate at the time went on to be a big highup with MLG (an idea that at the time I sneered at lol whoops)

One day till gameplay reveal for Halo Infinite… cautiously optimistic given all the intentional hearkening back to the originals.

installation 04 confirmed, look at the halo debris… also grappling hook? :eyes:

who was your roommate out of curiosity? I went to high school with Bravo, actually played in a doubles tourney he organized at school. (I got random-matched with a teammate and went 0-2; his team won IIRC)

Why do the 343 designs favor such short arms on the Spartans? It’s immediately noticeable in the Master Chief Collection, too, when you’re looking at armor colors and can tab between old/new views.

So far in my legendary playthrough of Halo CE, Assault on the Control Room has been the hardest (and most fun) level, while 343 Guilty Spark was surprisingly the easiest. The anniversary art also completely guts 343 Guilty Spark’s ambiance.

'bout to see what the libary can teach me about being a legend tho, and I don’t expect an easy lesson

My roommate was Synide. I looked him up recently and he had won some kind of esports award which is neat.

Someone at 343 is personally mad at me for making a forum post complaining about this when Combat Evolved Anniversary came out and they’re doing it out of spite. Master Chief is weirdly short and stout already bc of widescreen so the proportions are just totally fucked.

hmmm I was really expecting more from the reveal. it’s a good video to convince us that it won’t be as ugly as Halo 4 or 5 at least.

Just watched the Halo Infinite reveal on Twitch and rewatched on Youtube, instant reaction (positive and mixed):

  • +open skies! Wow I love a good blue sky.

  • +Sprint is in but it’s very slow, seems like 343 is balancing both factions of the fanbase. I don’t mind it, makes speedrunning more fun in some ways, and for multiplayer the downside of not being able to shoot should balance against the upside of (slower) increased speed.

  • +original Halo feeling music cues! Very important.

  • +warthog seems to handle properly slidey! It doesn’t have that electric whine from Halo 4 that I hated.

  • +You’re fighting Elites again! Always enjoyable fighting Elites. Their models also look good, middle ground between long+lanky CE elites and the post-2010 Gears-of-War meathead elites.

  • +Spike grenades are back! hooray.

  • +I actually enjoyed Brute bad-guy’s overwrought speech, it feels properly Halo, c.f. the Prophets’ speeches in Halo 2. I like his motivation being basically “Hey Demon 1v1 me”. I haven’t kept up with the lore so idk anything beyond that.

  • +Similarly I enjoy the human side character getting all pissed off at chief for dragging him into war, it’s a good middle ground between outright Spartan-worship of the muhreens vs. the Spartan-hatred we saw in Halo 4 storyline. I like the prospect of a developing relationship between the two. Master Chief hasn’t had to form a bond with an actual human being for a while, right? I didn’t play Halo 5 so IDK.

  • ~ less reliance on ridiculous metallic light bloom, aesthetically there’s more nature, expanded color palate with blues greens and browns. Which is good. However there is still an underlying shininess to everything that feels… not Halo somehow. Wait and see on the aesthetics but there’s cause for optimism.

  • ~ they showed an open-world style map with different places you can cursor over and get information. could be good or bad but honestly Halo is not just built to be a sandbox, mission scripting is important, story is important… Practically speaking this might play out a lot like ODST’s missions / hub world stuff. For speedrunning there will still be an optimal route (which will take some time to discover) and as long as there is enough story meat in between, will be good. wait and see. Also: It looks like the little descriptions for each of the map icons is written in the Chief’s voice, which is good. I was a little worried about it breaking immersion, but if we’re headcanon that this map is a way for him to keep his own battlefield notes, that’s good imo. It looks like when you mouseover them you can press X to start mission, which I assume plops a little nav point on your HUD and maybe Chief says some dialogue?

  • ~ Master Chief doesn’t talk during gameplay… yet. I hope it stays that way, his voice acting has been duller than usual since Halo 3 took over

  • ~ They had the unskippable cutscene when you press the button, but in general it seems like they won’t do the Halo 4 thing where every time you press a button you get locked into a button-pressing animation.

  • ~ Gunfeel looks a little Destiny/nu-halo, all the weapons make these little ptchew-ptchew noises, and there’s hitmarkers. Actually the little ptchew-ptchew noise might be the hitmarkers. I hate that audio cue. I don’t mind the visual hitmarkers so much and the AR looks and sounds good. Pistol looks/sounds good. So does the other human weapon, the Kommando or whatever. But i’m quite turned off by some of these other guns. That Brute Ravager gun that pops up halfway through? That’s a destiny ass gun. same with the pulse carbine. ptchew-ptchew-ptchew. Makes you long for the classic zoop-zoop of the old Plasma guns. The shotgun also looks weak as hell and makes a little ptchew ptchew noise. I guess there’s room for hope.

  • ~ not much sense of whether the AI has any brains, they looked pretty braindead at first glimpse, but honestly can’t make much of a judgment. The berserking brutes in the drop pods look… bad. They look like Serious Sam enemies.

  • ~ I’m not a fan of seeing the weapon details when you run over a weapon. I’d rather just see an icon like classic halo. Weapon details belong in a menu somewhere, for the loreheads.

  • ~ Grappling hook will be neat ish in small encounters and in speedrunning, cautiously optimistic about its gameplay uses. Grabbing and throwing fusion coils? Grappling up to high ledges? Ehh… Wait and see on those.

I dunno, I wasn’t super high on it initially, but after the rewatch I think there’s a lot of room for optimism. It’s just nice to see a good warthog-slide around rocks and trees again.

What’s cool about spike grenades? I don’t have a good understanding of what they’re for, yet

I just think they’re neat. They stick to walls and do damage in a conical radius

neat is a good reason

Is angling the cone realistically controllable by human hands, or does it act more like a highly-random output? It strikes me like bullets reflecting off walls which everyone tries but never really works in a 3D game, it’s just too complex for people and 3D has so much space next to 2D

You can aim where to stick it so insofar as you can aim, I guess. Idk I actually don’t think they’re super effective in combat in general.

Yeah, that’s what I’d guess with the conical projection. The Halo 3 manual says they have a 3m diameter (next to plasma grenades’ 4m and frag grenades’ 5m)

graphics clearly unfinished

I don’t mind it as much as ppl seem to be freaking out, but damn give those brutes some hair
