god, i'm so sorry (superhero-comicbook nonsense)

John Wick takes place in the fantasy universe of Payday 2 where cops are an unlimited resource and your power level is proportional to the amount of crime you do.

no cops basically don’t exist and every corporation has access to the sharing assassin economy and instead of laws we have the high tables strict corporate culture, the public has adopted a don’t ask don’t tell attitude towards all this and pretends to not notice despite everyone having their own accounts on the assassin sharing phone app just in case they’re falling behind on rent and happen to see a john wick limping through their neighborhood and decide they want to take that title shot. people complain about cyberpunk dystopias being stuck in the 80s, this is one realigned with the current world situation

the one-two punch of shang-chi and mortal kombat being presented as “wins” for asian representation is really driving me up the fucking wall. never before have asians been allowed to preform martial arts onscreen before. just the most gross, cynical and ahistorical take possible.

it is bad, but i think is like not entirely insignificant that both have asian american leads (as opposed to people who are already famous in hk etc, which its very easy to see as cynically courting an international audience), and that mortal kombat began as like an explicitly racist franchise and has been commandeered into something… less horrible

i understand the impulse and all, but when people from any ethnic group have to consider white-created ip owned by massive hollywood entertainment conglomerates as “our stories” i just feel such a deep dark dread about the level of cultural impoverishment and narrowness of imagination possible within the system that it reveals.

Finally, Disney is willing to turn its baleful eye and spend millions of dollars upon its entirely antiseptic version of our culture’s ostensible stories! All praise to Moloch

i mean i will always cosign cynicism. and especially wrt the idea that disney gets to feel virtuous about realizing that the racism of the film industry has been actively preventing them from maximizing their profits.

but i think being like hyper blackpilled and theatrically aghast that someone might be excited about stuff like this is a bad look and also missing the point.

i don’t know that anyone who is excited about more people who aren’t white in mainstream movies thinks that it’s like, the solution to racism or whatever.

i just think it is ok to expect mainstream mass media entertainment to actually reflect the people who are expected to consume it? and to feel like moderately relieved when an inch of progress towards that reality is achieved. this isn’t rocket science…

i don’t necessarily disagree, just wish that we were getting big-budget mark dacascos vehicles instead of (or in addition to) these but i suppose since cinema is dead this is all there is

he was in those mortal kombat shorts, they should have cast him in the movie too

also technically part of the mcu because he was (totally wasted) on agents of shield

was so happy for dacascos in john wick. wish he and keanu coulda fought on screen like 20 years earlier

i liked the first few seasons of it a lot, but i feel they kind of lost the plot when they went to space. i fell off partway through that season and never had the energy to pick it up again. i thought when they introduced ghost rider they were finally starting to make good on the potential of introducing various familiar marvel characters rather than just like… spinning off into their own weirdness, but then right after that they seemed to take a hard swerve into stuff that was either original or just too obscure for me to care about. i mean i guess it’s not fair to judge the whole series based on whether or not it features characters i already know and care about, but i still feel like it was a missed opportunity. were the final seasons any better?

incredible to somehow set the bar lower for videogame movies but they managed to do it. you know when i think about the og mortal kombat movie the thing that makes it work is never treating the goofy bad taste of the originals as something to not treat 100% seriously. robin shou has charisma and good raport with the whole cast

the new mortal kombat movie is martial arts movie about fighting games made by someone who has never played one who also probably hates martial arts movies. all of the cool fights literally happen in the trailer.

people get their superpowers from being chosen for mortal kombat. even the mechanical ones. kung lao’d hat is his superpower? the movie looks directly into the camera and says “videogames are for children” anytime someone throws a fireball. the protagonists Fighting Game Ability is a warm-up suit.

cant believe i stayed up for 2am to watch this movie. absolute dog shit. tv tropes is ruining society.

does it at least do the thing mk and mk annihilation did where the whole thing is extremely uneven and unintelligible but then they play the immortal technique song during the big climactic fight and it somehow gets you disproportionately hyped up all the same

not even. home boy fights goro in a barn in ohio

the current DTV action movie production style is a real drag, even though it always gets everyone on twitter talking about these (eg the recent Bob Odenkirk thing) for a day and therefore must be good. it seems like a sign of … something that MK11’s story was actually better staged and better acted than this movie (where “better” = as enjoyably dumb as possible).

This movie is the best you could hope for from the type of person who considers Shang Tsung x Nitara an OTP.

it’s exactly what you’d expect from a post-MCU Mortal Kombat movie in 2021. i hope no one was expecting a great cinematic achievement.

look there is a joke about doing nothing but leg sweeps. i had a fun time with it. I do wish they had just kept Christopher Lambert because how can you top that casting.
