that role is weirdly reminiscent of the time both he and jean yoon, who plays his wife on kims convenience, showed up in an episode of the canadian sci fi series ‘dark matter’. iirc they are also playing a couple in that episode, so it is like very charming stunt casting, until they both die in an exploding space station at the end of the episode

I’ve been putting Kim’s Convenience on recently because I couldn’t find anything else that might be equally watchable to everything in my family (I guess that’s the point of sitcoms) and it’s been relatable to my mom in a way I don’t think I’ve ever seen her react to a show before.
Something about the Shang-Chi fights looked as limp and generic as a lot of Marvel stuff despite how clearly it’s trying to do wuxia style wirework and dramatic shots. Not sure what is off about. It’s the kind of thing that should be super cool but somehow isn’t.
I heard Warrior on Cinemax/HBO Max was cool. Maybe I’ll try that out.

That last one was real good, glad it found its footing. Only thing that was a bit jarring was the Flagsmashers b-plot, which felt like it should’ve been in another episodes.
The storyline with Isaiah Bradley, mirroring the fucked-up Tuskegee Syphilis Study, was A+ stuff.

oh yeah i was also being real. i miss the matrix / jet li era of action movies. i mean i know they say the john wick movies are good but that stuff just feels too slick to me, idk.
i thought the marvel tv shows were occasionally ok but often baffingly bad when it came to action. wildly inconsistent.
i liked into the badlands a lot, but oddly the actual fighting never left much of an impression on me. it was a cool show, last season got super weird but weird is better than boring i guess.

I rewatched all the Wick movies lately and my opinion on them improved. I’d had the same impression as you, but upon returning to them I found most of the action so full of joy and character that it was hard to fault too much. I mean it isn’t classic kung fu movies or early 90’s Hong Kong but what is.
It’s pretty weird that you specifically contrast “too slick” with Matrix/Jet Li, since I think those turn of the century movies are exactly when slickness became the recipe…
Pretty much all the good action movies are DTV now.
i think my deal with john wick is that it just like doesn’t make sense in universe to me? like in the matrix you understand roughly the various power levels of everyone involved, but john wick is just about, like, guys?
i guess john wick itself is probably great, but the imitations it has inspired all feel like… too overtly choreographed to me? like when they do the thing where the guy punches someone without even looking at them, or miraculously predicts where the next guy is going to be or whatever. i feel like there’s a way to make that look cool, and there’s a way to make it look like the on camera evidence of the fact that all of this was practiced for three months on a basketball court before they shot it.

Yeah I could give a shit about the Continental Extended Universe or whatever and think it was a big misstep to give the series a Mythology, but it fully embraces the mook/boss convention without diegetically justifying it by saying “these people are literal superheroes” like the Matrix does, or The One or whatever (how hilarious is it that Jet Li had an immediate post-Matrix movie called The One lol). I don’t mind. The redeemed assassin is an archetype old as time.
