Games You Played Today VI (III in the west)

Nice. I did this a few years ago with Halo 1 and it was an experience that I won’t forget. Shit was annoying!!

I remember having one player act as rambo and the other hang back as a glorified respawn point to clear the old halos on legendary. Soloing it sounds rough.

I have read the new Hardcoregaming101’s article about Ghostwire: Tokyo and it looks super interesting to me.
Has anybody played it on SB?

I’ve not but it’s been on gamepass since the twelfth

Ohh, but it’s not on PS4… bummer.

Considering how poorly it runs, I’m not sure you really want it on PS4

i bought Ghostwire: Tokyo on sale for PS5. i think it’s pretty neat, but i didn’t get super far into it because it’s like…fine. it kind of depends on how much you enjoy the open-world formula “go here to do thing. ok, now go here to do thing. great, here are four things you can do or you can go to this thing” combined with some decently tactile FPS mechanics.

it didn’t wow me, but i also don’t think it deserved to be completely ignored on release.

I mean to try it while I have game pass. I watched someone play it for about an hour. I couldn’t help but feel extremely sad about the most stunningly accurate rendered Tokyo ever seen in a game but there are ghosts and you gotta go to action points and not use the city as you would in reality.

I got your point, but, by your description, wouldn’t Nier Automata (for example) also fall in the same category?

yes, for sure. i guess maybe a better articulated point is that the things happening in between going from point to point weren’t as compelling to me

the city does look gorgeous but like Rudie says, there isn’t much to really do

i think that yes, there are times when i enjoy this formula, but it’s just a matter of whether it’s done well or not. when it’s not, i find the open world formula more tedious than other genres, for whatever reason.

I perfectly understand. I can apply what you wrote above to Deadly Premonition, for example, just replacing “the city is gorgeous” with “the tone is great”, and the whole critique would tell why I didn’t feel motivated to go on.

i think if you’re curious about it, it’s worth playing Ghostwire, i just didn’t end up getting very far into it because i have a lot of other things to play that i’d rather play at the moment. i will probably go back to it, eventually, because it’s nice enough, but it isn’t a major priority for me

Congrats!

Reach is my favorite Halo, so I almost did that it last year. I solo-legendaried all but the janky space-dogfighting level and then decided I have nothing to prove and this space crap is not even Halo

For me the second worst was actually the very first level. It gave me the impression I was probably not cut out for Legendary. Then it turned out it was because the first level gives you so few decent weapons

been getting deeper into the first Judgment on PS5 since it’s included in the PS+ stuff. i enjoy it, but it wasn’t something i felt like playing super often. however my wife really wanted something to get into now that Persona 5 Royal is finished, and so i’m super thankful that Judgment includes a “simple” difficulty because she can play it without having to ask me to do anything and i can just watch

also been trying to pick up playing shmups again - Zero Ranger is cool, but i’m so used to Cave-style shmups that it’s taking some adjustment and realization that it’s more like a Treasure shooter

Prolly too late since you are 8 hours in but The Trails in the Sky PC release has a fast forward button that leaves the music at regular speed.

Been playing Dark Arms: Beast Buster for NeoGeoPocket Color emulated on my little crt.

Simple top down selectable stage based exploration of a monster infested hellscape with day/night differences. Plays like the top down sections of the Blaster Master titles. Big emphasis on evolving weapons by feeding them captured beast flesh. All the weapons are as big as you are and feel like they were inspired by like Videodrome or Tokyo Gore Police.

Its nothing super special but I feel compelled to play it to see whats next. Its charming and mysterious.

Wish I had my own screen ready to go the ones online kinda suck.

Its based on a series of light gun games with a charming official website:

Are there any light gun games with (significant?) simultaneous controller input? For a second parsed your post as saying that is a light gun game, and I was thinking about moving that little guy through the dungeon with your left hand on a dpad while shooting at the screen with your right.

I suppose some guns might have little directional hats on them that get some use, but I’m wondering if there’s something more like 1P Lucky and Wild or greater?

The Gun Con 2 is the superior controller for use with Dead Aim, at least in the shooting areas of the game. Not only does it plunge you deep into the action, but it allows for much more accuracy in aiming. What you should consider is to use a combination of the GunCon 2 and Dual Shock in order to facilitate fast motion and quick shooting. Your call.

i think they largely mean switching out at the relevant sections, but seems viable to use them simultaneously

Awesome, ty. I don’t know if I’ve ever actually held a guncon so I was half imagining the pad there (and was right) but I didn’t know if it was ever commonly used besides menus. Sad that light guns are dead, on-screen-crosshair-with-motion-controls is comparatively so corny

in the first half of the space dogfight you have to hide behind anchor 9 and let them take care of most of the enemies, then when you get to the corvette it’s a a game of taking the engines out asap and then using the savannah as cover so you don’t get fucked to death by seraphs. it’s pretty awful and takes forever to get through

the second worst level was new alexandria if only because having to push my hornet off buildings and call for evac to duck the huge clouds of enemy banshees waiting for me outside each objective was annoying
