I feel most strongly about this after having played 3-1, the tower of latria prison. that approach seems to be the most plainly evident in that level.
as of the april update destiny throws gear at you, getting to the current max level is basically a case of ‘play the game however you want for a week or so’ & for the first time is very doable completely solo
then you’re massively over levelled for the ttk raid on hard, let alone normal difficulty
having people to play with is absolutely crucial though
It’s fun. But it’s a side thing and it shows. I think you’d enjoy it if you liked 4, but at this point get it cheap.

I know that I keep harping on this, but 90s fps design was significantly rooted in tabletop RPGs, just as much as first person dungeon crawlers were. Sandy Petersen literally wrote the Call of Cthulhu RPG, and granted while his levels tended to be garish, they did play extremely well (one of them being the best level in Doom 2). Jennell Jaquays was the greatest module writer of the 80s and worked with id on Quake 2 and Quake III levels. Her baroque, super interconnected and massive dungeon layouts were an obvious template on the way the Souls series would design their levels, though I do not know if they’re an acknowledged influence (they could be. Another 80s tabletop RPG, Runequest, was directly referenced numerous times)

Can’t tell if I like Civ4 but I must cause I keep playing it!
I always like Civ 4 until the game ever gets to an attritional stack slog stalemate, which is inevitable, and then I wake up and feel a powerful pang of indignation from watching RNG jerk itself off turn by turn to a long-forgone and very dull conclusion.
Survival / crafting sims are to 4X games what MOBAs are to RTS games.
I wasn’t supposed to stay up this late. I’m really upset. There are tears. And I didn’t get enough of the UN vote.

i like some of the soundtrack, i like the stuff it’s very upfront about cribbing from, and i’m a little overly fond of rpg maker games… i thought with all of that together i could have a good time, but nope

or maybe it’s worse. it seems like this guy’s whole schtick is making “X game, but edgier”
Destiny PVP is like Halo PVP but a lot worse because of how it’s way messier and less intuitive also want to change your weapon?? get ready to sit at the inventory screen forever while people shoot at you. what a joke. especially after playing doom pvp which frankly is so much more fun
It sucks how such great gunplay is tacked onto a really dull skinner box

LISA is about saving your adoptive daughter. an hour in, you set some orphans on fire and it’s played for laughs.
when the game isn’t trying to be funny, it’s using drug addiction, parental and sexual abuse as crude gotchas
blech. time to never think about this again

also my roommate busted out his dreamcast last night so i beat typing of the dead. it’s such a video game and i love it

The original Typing of the dead is fantastic although I only play it once every 3 years since it annihilates my wrists. The campy fun is missing from the more recent remake unfortunately.

yeah, i played typing of the dead overkill a couple months ago and i wasn’t a huge fan of its style. the original, on the other hand, had me lose a life because the sentence “they’ll hear this fart on jupiter!” came up and i started laughing too much to type accurately
