It’s funny that I get just as frustrated with Castlevania’s fourth stage gauntlet as I did as a little kid.

My swearing is probably more creative these days though.

stage four rules

is there are part that particularly gets you?

Well, I can get through the underground cavern pretty easily unless I do something stupid. After that though unless I time everything right while maintaining forward momentum the flea guys overwhelm me. And then if I die just after that I find it nearly impossible to take on that bone snake without a full powered whip, at least without taking a couple of hits. So, even though I can usually manage to get to the boss, I’m underpowered for the fight.

Basically, if I can get through the first two areas without dying I’m gold. Just need to git gud I guess (and maybe also not play when I’m saddled with a wicked hangover).

The secret is to not lose the holy water

Frankie/Igor is kind of a badly designed fight imo

That really applies to most of the game. Dracula’s first form is basically the only boss it doesn’t work with at all.

The holy water is why I had to finally admit the game wasn’t perfect.

Okay, well, it’s perfect, just very unbalanced.

CV1 didn’t click for me until i learned about the hidden subweapon combo mechanic

Frank/Igor is probably where i die and give up the most too, though (second most is Death)

apparently you can play soul cal2 online via dolphin…

this can’t be good for me…

played a bunch of Zelda on Switch over the weekend. the game it reminds me the most of is Asheron’s Call for Windows. In that game, I started my character by pumping all my skill points into running so that I could explore as much of the world as possible and always run away from enemies.

also really enjoying Lufia for Game Boy Color (via the N3DS eShop). A surprisingly charming cast, amazing pixel art, a couple really interesting battle/magic systems, and randomized roguelike-ish dungeons.

Plus that battle music, right??

I finally got around to Dishonored 2. It’s good! I guess I didn’t pay any attention to it before it came out, so I didn’t know that it took place in a different city or that you can play it as a Dadgame if you want. I’m playing as Elizabeth of course, and it really is a bit weird there aren’t more games about being a deposed ruler now that I think about it.

I was going to play it full-on murdergod, but I’m actually so bad at the combat that I’ve been forced into playing it much stealthier than I would have chosen, and I’m so bad at stealth that I get forced into a lot of tense combat encounters. As much as the game keeps saying that you can play it however you want to, I actually really appreciate when I feel forced into a playstyle in a game with options (or the illusion of options, as something like Riddick is similar but I don’t think you can ACTUALLY play it by fighting everyone) because it feels almost roleplay-y? Like, I’m not making decisions based on my actual preferences but what I need to do to get through the stupid game.

There’s a lot going on everywhere I go and I just ignore 90% of it, which is also awesome B)

Finally got around to playing Wild Guns Reloaded. What a game, such a joy to look at and listen to. Love the synth hits and the new explosion effects and the weird characters. You can dial the fake scanlines to taste, they look good all the way turnt up. Looks great widescreen on a big TV perfect for a gallery shooter. Very solid feeling, feels like a lost MVS release the SNES game would have been down-ported from, perfect.

Would have appreciated some concessions to modernity in letting players save their progress. I think it is bound to, perhaps already has, flop due to the pricing. Give these guys money and time and let them keep making brand new stuff exactly in this look/feel vein.

At first I wasn’t totally into it, but Dandy Dungeon has really grown on me. It’s a slow burn but I’m okay with that in a mobile game.

I beat Fire Emblem Awakening! The dialogue is not quite the brilliance that out of context tumblr posts will lead you to believe, but there’s still a lot of charm. The campaign took me some 64 hours and closer to the end they were dumping a bunch of new characters on me, and I was getting burnt out on grinding for S-Links, so I just muscled through to the ending. Still pretty curious about playing the other games, but for now I definitely need to go play something else. NitW and Zelda still need my attention.
