Games You Played Today Classic Mini

I was too busy laughing at how they did the thing where they stylistically SHOW the WORDS as they are SAID during the intro cutscene for them to register any meaning. like, I didn’t even know that was said. can I make the case that the game is satirical because the beauty of the setting overwhelmingly drowns out what the frontloaded farts of text/marketing suggest?

This game is a work of hundreds of artists who’ve done their jobs beyond outstandingly and whatever they’re paid isn’t enough, and maybe 1 or 2 idiots trying to justify the setting and their work is forgotten past the first hour; it just writes itself. “the attack happened at jefferson square. you know what to do. hey. kill them all.” (no really this is a mission prompt in the game, word for word lol)

I feel that it’s unfair to give the writers (for what little writing there is even) or marketing executives most of the credit for this game; my mind automatically filters it out and I pay attention to what resonates with me.

here’s another pretty building shot

how’m I ever gonna play this game co-op where I can’t stop every 20 minutes to take screenshots and write posts defending it for being one type of dumb over another on a forum for sensitive intellectuals

late edit: This conversation made me realize my enjoyment of The Division 2 (or indeed any Tom Clancy-branded media) is basically contingent on multiple sources of unchecked privilege and I hope the world gets better so that someday everyone can have the privilege to enjoy this game (or by that time it’s The Division 17) and give Ubisoft their money. In the meantime I hope this game isn’t making the world worse, or at least it surely isn’t as much as Destiny is.

Yeah I mean it’s a shame that they imply your liberal ass was raped and murdered by your republican neighbor but I don’t think that the people working on this have much to do with right wing politics… It’s just a dumb framework for a shooty shooty bang bang game. I’m not that riled up by it. I could see myself playing it but really I’m into different games right now. It’s just a mood thing

After almost six months of incubation, my briefest of exposures to Ultimate Chicken Horse at Select Button Bumpass Edition has finally become symptomatic in that I suddenly find myself obsessed. This unexpectedly coincides with a recent update to the game which added a bunch of stuff I don’t really care about.

Since I don’t actually have any time to play this game, I just watched some folks play it over a period of sessions on Youtube while eating dinner for the last week. At first, I told myself I’d watch until I got bored, but then I realized they didn’t yet know that honey lets you stick traps to moving objects. After they figured that out, I found myself compelled to keep watching until one of them discovered or announced the existence of the secret path on the jungle temple. Now they they’ve done that, I can stop watching this and do something else.

how about a game set in a newly-formed socialist republic and you’re killing counter-revolutionaries? surely that would please everyone?

“This piece of media in which we stand around lovingly recreated monuments to a country and murder people has no political messaging when you ignore all the words in it” is some straight gamer galaxy brain shit.

At least this time you aren’t murdering sanitation workers and prisoners as the heoric good guy cop force, so totally not political at all.

Like really, it is A-OK to like some indefensible shit, as long as you are honest about it and aren’t trying to pretend it isn’t what it is.

After the docking pad snafu, I kept playing Elite for a couple more hours. I’m avoiding combat entirely, as I kept dying during the training missions in encounters it kept telling me were easy. It still feels like there’s a lot of info I’m missing, but I can land and dock and hyperspace and basically be the space trucker I want to be.

Bought a ship with more cargo room. Looking for a mining laser so I can be space prospector too.

Aside from that, Thimbleweed Park got its hooks into me deep. It is absolutely a game made for its crowdfunding backers, though that is perhaps because I left the “inside jokes” option on. I’m loving it.

I played about 15 minutes of The Division 1 a couple of weeks ago and separating all the politics from it since the folks above described them better than I could (and I do subscribe to finding it the grossest thing out there from an AAA game), I found the gameplay honestly shocking.

The city looks great, I agree, but after being given your first mission (in a bizarre hub building full of spazzing out PCs emoting and slamming into furniture, whether you find this amusing or not sure whatever) you’re put on some waist high cover against some Level 1 Street Thugs who are guys in tank tops and pants that you empty multiple bullets into with no reaction other than their life bars going down. Loot shooters are so freaking weird to me. In general I’m really not keen on it as a concept but when it’s something like Destiny and you’ve got alien weapons and alien enemies, I can kind of play along with the idea of emptying 20 rounds into an alien’s head because of however this universe works. But when you’re putting “real” bullets into Just Some Dude’s noggin and he’s barely flinching it just feels absurd.

it seems like it would make more sense if you played the looters in this game. like then the loot would be in shops and you would just go and get it and no-one would get shot (??)

Loot Looter

This is a decent game premise actually, though it skews a bit more towards the survival genre. A survival/schlooter hybrid.

Schloovival?

Blaster Master Zero 2 got announce-released yesterday, and I guess I bought it.

Area B is, of all things, an extended reference to Ikki.

You know what Baba is You is reminding me of? Jelly no Puzzle. It has the same feeling of ‘I just made a miracle happen’ when solving the puzzles.

I was so lukewarm on the first one. this one seems to have some vaguely interesting ideas but they all seem kind of gimmicky. how do you feel about it so far?

You almost need VR or a 4th screen with Elite just so you can simultaneously watch Youtube tutorials on how to land/scan/mine/collect/jump etc.

I figured out how to be a tour bus.
