my copy of deadly premonition 2 (or as it says on the box, dead2y premonition) arrived today. i played the quite extensive intro and a few little early missions. the writing is still good! won’t be able to properly evaluate this until i get over the joy i felt at hearing new dialogue from york, but they really did make another deadly premonition game.

missed an opportunity to have the box art just be francis york morgan giving a peace sign next to the Deadly Premonition logo like the ghostbuster 2 ghost.

I really enjoyed D4 as a really accessible Swery-take on point and click adventures and am sad there probably won’t be another one. They also reused York’s original name for the MC from the earlier more overtly Twin Peaksy version of DP1

Checking out OFF, the French ‘batter vs. ghosts’ RPG. Pretty kooky and some nice flavour to the writing. It occasionally goes a bit too meta but it’s good stuff for a pre-Undertale indie effort. Great music and good use of stock illustrations too. Something about having a batter as the main character in a game that otherwise has no references to baseball is really doing things for my mood.

While waiting for Deadly Premonition 2 I’ve also been playing Sakura Wars (PS4) despite having never played a previous game in the series. It’s not quite as horny as it looks and I’m enjoying the premise a lot (more games involving theatres is something I didn’t know I wanted).

The structural presentation is very deliberately close to a serial TV show with ‘next time on’ and the opening theme really feeling like an opening theme. These kinds of devices are always weird in games but I’m playing a long with it because I love the style and music so far.

Does anyone know what this musical style would be called? It’s kinda inspirational anime showtunes? I imagine a trumpet blasting off into space every time I hear the opening stinger.

The combat kinda sucks and doesn’t really go beyond basic Musou. Also the camera is so drawn back when you’re in a mech that it feels like you’re piloting a collectible toy. The snap dialogue choices and silly office drama of running a theatre/mech launchpad is more entertaining despite being very simple.

sentai funk

i don’t know how to describe it because that sentai opening sound is very 70s disco/funk-ish in general.

I think it loses a lot being a boring Musou instead of an easy SRPG like the others. I def recommend checking out the Saturn original that was recently fantranslated if you like this one.

It’s harmless enough but I can definitely see this working better as an SRPG. Seems even weirder considering the Valkyria Chronicles devs made this one.

It’s mainly because they’re such ensemble games that an SRPG is the only way everyone gets to participate all the time. It also has harder stats to effect picking the right dialogue options, etc.

They’re charming games and like you said with this one, they’re not THAT horny and the opportunities you do get to be a pervert you’re rightfully punished for it.

Seems even even weirder when Sakura Taisen 3 onwards is basically prototype Valkyria Chronicles

i really like the music in that opening, i am really bad with genres of music but it reminds me of this stuff i like to hear from time to time:

Except by Gunbuster, i never watched the other two actually.

Marble It Up is great and literally just Marble Blast Ultra with cooler aesthetics which is fantastic imo

Demon’s Tilt continues to be really good

Yeah the original theme is almost a direct copy of Takarazuka show music. The modern version has a bit more idol influences. I will ask Lady Rude for some youtube links later.

I finally found that Bill in Nocturne yesterday.
That was hard for me, and I wonder what challenges await me next

Edit: ah, it’s that skeleton I’ve always heard about…

i do not know why but i am playing minish cap for the first time and like it’s completely unremarkable aside from a few superficially neat ideas but I am still playing it for some reason
