I absolutely loved it because I’m a sucker for games syncronised to music that aren’t full rhythm games. I like rhythm games too but Sayonara scratched the itch so well. I want more of this. Would shift along the Kinsey scale again.

Playing S&S further I discovered that there’s an unique obscure weapon called the Jaws of Death that’s just a pair of giant scissors. It’s ridiculously powerful

i like the shooting and the sound of it melting my graphics card but skipping all of the dialogue as it’s some ff13 tier gibberish

The dialogue gets slightly better as you kinda just go with the situation. Text logs have the bulk of the best fiction though. I’m a crazy person because I hate the combat in Control but love everything else, even when it was basically hardlocking my PS4.

Doom Eternal: I like the parts where I run around and zip around arenas and shoot things and explode them into health and armor and I like that Doomguy has had enough of everyone’s shit and is just going to end everything

I do not like the parts that have a bunch of platforming

Maybe this is a failure of empathy but I have a hard time even conceptualizing the way a person could have this opinion

Wow Uhhh…yeah…yeeesh

I’ve only seen an out of context clip where the PC lady is talking to another lady and it’s like they’re both trying to talk around whatever topic came up and I know that would drive me up a wall if the whole game was like that. I haven’t seen much else so I don’t know what setup it goes through or how the tone develops.

The protagonist has an interestingly direct way of speaking to people and they have a lot of fun playing it off the bureaucratic oddballs. It’s a dry, nordic ā€˜off’ tone playing something like Twin Peaks’ FBI crossed with an office sitcom.

I work with somebody who is almost Emily Pope to a T. Sharp, of indeterminate and ageless youth, endlessly enthusiastic, and one of the things I work on most with him is convincing him to not write 75-page design documents where a single email would suffice.

There was a missed opportunity in Control to lean more into the workplace/bureaucratic comedy angle. That is the good part, but ultimately it remains undeveloped as the lore keeps adding more X-files homages instead.

The game’s story never gets better than the opening premise of being a rando who walks in the door, asks the janitor where the director’s office is, and then the director immediately shoots himself to transfer to you the hot potato of his role.

I saw the whole thing as a pretty compelling allegory for the tedium of office life. A lot of the lore is formally the result of shitty bureaucracy and masculine powerplay office politics that do nothing for anyone. The fact that entire departments literally get lost or that the board are actually incompetent or that the people (beings?) on the lowest rung are the ones keeping the whole thing from falling apart.

There’s more inside it then this, but it’s absolutely a response to a decade of mismanagement living under Microsoft and the new, smaller, independent Remedy and the damage it did to the studio to get there

My gripe is that it’s in the spirit of critique from a distance and not really identifying with the perspective of the bureaucratic actors

After the director is replaced by an external hire in the midst of a crisis, there is a pitched bureaucratic battle: the newcomer tries to wield their formal authority to redirect the organization to alien new goals, while the holdover subordinates wield their knowledge, experience and connections to maintain their prerogatives. The opening setup creates this tension only to quietly dissolve it without explanation

Each of the (very few, blessedly) main characters has a great affect that is really well-supported by the facial tech. It’s almost like Dark Souls, Comedy Edition: each person is lurking in this dangerous interconnected world and often eventually (offscreen) wanders back to the hub, and each is a unique weirdo.

The whole plot is also in service of one extremely good joke, which is that you, the fabled Director with all these magical powers are the janitor’s assistant and indeed, your whole job is… cleaning up the building. It’s the most visually gorgeous shaggy dog story
