Games You Played Today: 358 Threads Over 2

i bought contra anniversary collection since it was on sale. it might just be nostalgia, but i really really like game boy contra.

after that, motorcross maniacs, and nemesis ii, i should look further into konami’s gb output. it seems they had a bit of a knack for the system

Archimedes is one of those “snoop through a computer/phone and solve a mystery” games, which I’m starting to get really scornful of, but I figured it’s already in my Steam library so I might as well give it a go. About a 15 minutes into the game, you’re expected to tab out of the game and (manually) enter the URL for a google drive link. A bit clumsy, but sure, I’m game.

The link is dead lol. I could apparently go look up the needed information in a Let’s Play but fuck that, now I’m completely apathetic about this game.

At this point maybe an 8th of my Steam library must be games that don’t actually work in 2021. Makes the backlog easier to churn I guess

Outside of this thread are you making a Games You Played List? I’d love to read that for 2020 and 2021?

I mean, I guess I could but I’m not sure how to make it more than just regurgitating what I’ve already written ITT

Well, going through the Games You Played Today threads going back to last May, I have 114 games named specifically, as well as several posts where I talk about playing an unspecified handful of games during bouts of backlog whittling. So, once I figure out an interesting way to do a little retrospective please prepare yourself for

There and Back(log) Again

Nice, I enjoy those kinds of lists too. I’d make one myself if I wasn’t so lazy. Maybe I’ll make a PS5 only list, that should limit it nicely

I’m still playing Days Gone and it’s still pretty good. Not much to say about it currently except maybe address some criticisms I’ve read about it. People say that the main character, Deacon aka Deek, is too vanilla and has no personality. I hard disagree with that. His character is in his visual design and the way he delivers his lines. I find him interesting and I’ve never heard a videogame character mumble and mutter to himself like this. It’s a pretty weird direction to take him in but I dig it. He also yells at the top of his lungs at the truther radio station, which is almost always unintentionally funny!

I’m also 4 hours or so into Persona 5. It starts out trying to be cool but comes off as cringey to me. It’s way too anime for my taste. But the English dub is really good. If the script was less anime I’d enjoy it a hell of a lot. Maybe that’s like saying if only water was less wet… Persona has always been super anime, right? I love the UI design and it’s so far very considerate of my time, doesn’t make me do mindless stuff. The only thing I don’t like is how long some segments are where you’re not allowed to save. That not only stresses me out, it’s also inconvenient because sometimes I just want to pick up and play something for half an hour and then I don’t want to be forced to play an hour to go from save to save.

I’ll give it up to the 10 hour mark and if it hasn’t convinced me fully by then I’ll just play something else

Since I was complaining about Days Gone last week what is your experience with AAA video game? I don’t think any of my complaints about Days Gone are unique to Days Gone (oh wait I thought of two while typing) but my above post is about how everything about it in every light is to build a resume for everyone involved. You can kind of point to each micro-part of it as “good” but it is ultimately a coded white nationalist gets to enact their dream of murder and pillage of anyone they meet (all Zombie Fiction.) Like you kill so many people within the first hour. And then it hangs a lantern on it with child zombies…You can kill!

The tone of the game does kind of straddle the line, that’s true. I don’t like that but it hasn’t made me uncomfortable enough to write it off and quit it yet. Like, the game is certainly dealing with some dark themes. It kind of references that at one point where someone says that due to the zombie apocalypse there are no good people left, the only ones who survived are the ones wicked enough to do whatever it takes to stay alive. It’s that kind of world now. I feel like that’s offset by the main character who still lives by a code. Sure, the game makes you kill a lot of people, not just zombies but it’s videogamey enough where I can look past that.

What keeps me playing is the polish of everything that’s in the game, which is really, really unusual for a huge open world game like this. Like, it feels as huge and cluttered with stuff to do as an Assassin’s Creed/Ubisoft game but with the polish of a very linear, smaller scoped game. That probably goes back to what you mentioned about it being a resume building exercise. It’s actually kind of impressive how every part works so well but in the end it doesn’t create something bigger than the sum of its parts… yet. Maybe that changes if you get deeper - it is like a 60 hour game or so after all.

So, I feel like it’s an immensely competently crafted game that doesn’t really have a soul, it doesn’t reach for something meaningful to say, not in the beginning hours, anyway. I am kind of afraid that it will find something to say and that that thing is “government bad, guns good” or some other right leaning bullcrap. It certainly feels like it could go in that direction, even though the main character makes fun of the right-wing nut at every opportunity for now

Pretty sure I just saw an enemy cast a 10MP spell with only 9 left in Shining Force 2, which is some weird bullshit I don’t think I’ve ever seen happen before in my countless playthroughs over the last 25 odd years

Finished the new game plus of Ring Fit Adventure and it turns out there’s another ‘final’ NG+

I’m not sure I’m in for a third run through and will probably start looking for an alternative for exercise at this point. Not because it hasn’t been good for my health but the stages and the meta-structure of the whole thing are becoming very repetitive 203 days in.

Also not sure how unskippable credits at the end of the nearly half hour final exercise section (which you must sit through to get to the cooldown stretch) made it through QA.

I’m playing the Mafia Definitive Edition remake and it’s entirely unnecessary. I am just going to run through it to get achievements but I feel that it is bad.

Worked through Primordia, an adventure game set in a world of dead robots and pragmatic pessimism. Like Full Throttle, the puzzles reflect the main character’s personality. The ever-cloaked Horatio is a builder and tinkerer and the puzzles are dry, straightforward, and about building tools to accomplish problems. I knew even before I searched sb that this was a Cuba special - let’s do it at Salt Lake in time to the sunrise, yeah?

The world is settled, calm, and slightly miserable, but it’s not a source of overriding tension but the specific struggle of life. It’s livable because the characters are still alive. The peace of the grave, and in the best way.

Played through all five ranks of Receiver 2 again just in the past hour. Haven’t been able to operate like that before. Was really intense in a couple levels, down to one or no bullets, moving to the shadows while turrets aren’t looking and desperately attempting to hack the one that has its back to me… then, *beep!* and I run. Still just a phenomenal game. Like, it is such a feeling to play. A full mood.

Had this one moment in the early phases, maybe rank 1 or 2 even. I got one of those Threat Echoes tapes, the ones that make you turn your own weapon on you and kill yourself if you have it loaded. By this point I’m a pro at ejecting my rounds and pulling the magazine out and just letting the moment pass. This time I was kind of being a jack ass… flippant and disrespectful, jumping around and shooting the empty gun just for fun. Half paying attention I let one of my fingers, SOMEHOW, equip a magazine that was slotted in my inventory, and then SOMEHOW SOMEHOW insert the magazine into the gun all while I was staring down the barrel’s end. I let out an “ah, oh fuck!!” like my virtual life really was precious. I felt a chill so real for a second. But I didn’t end up shooting myself. So it was really just hilarious and frightening haha.
