I just played God Hand for the first time.

…wow. I get it now. That perfect video game idiocy taken to 11!

I guess Girl reaching the Earth is what I mean. Surprisingly bittersweet ending.

Playing Daimakaimura and Shinobi now that I’ve cleared Strider Hiryu on a credit. I want to play Shinobi because I want to crouch and walk.

Checked out Inside because it was on sale and a coworker from a few years ago recommended it. The jumping immediately made my thoracic spine feel like explosively growing fangs and grabbing something like a stress ball. I remember every unprompted jump looking like Mickey in Castle of Illusion quitting halfway through his ascent. There was one part I liked in a section where you had to grab on background elements to shield yourself, everything else was kind of boring and or annoying but I expected this.

I played a bit of Frisky Tom, it’s okay. Tom doesn’t seem too frisky he moves really slow

If you turn off everything in The Crew 2 and load up Spotify you have a very chill America Cross Country game. You can even buy a Ferrari and play Outrun.

I sat in my Mazda RX-5 and got to watch a Texas Hill Country Sunset. Drove across a very strange version of The Gulf Coast listening to Hotelier.

There is a lot that it is really bad but since I haven’t driven a car or been to America in 18 months it feels very good to do that on my couch.

Ohio doesn’t exist but my Dad’s hometown is in the game for some reason. Town of 2000 people and one stoplight.

The Longing is like The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa or Arrest of a Stone Buddha but way less subtle. I feel like I already -got- the game before buying it, and the act of playing it offers no new information or revelation

TBH now that I have a (9 months old) baby I maybe can’t viscerally relate with the crushing loneliness at this game’s core even though I’ve lived a few years in absolute loneliness a decade ago

b-but it’s an indie game tradition to have no subtlety and no depth beyond your one initial premise. that’s why we all definitely still care about the collective works of Jason Rohrer.

BTW Liz I watched somebody play through Maquette a while back and man your take on it was so on point, I was hooting through most of it.

i think that might have been @OneSecondBefore (i haven’t played it myself)? unless it was just me complaining about prestige indie games in general on here, a thing i frequently do

Indeed, I dunked hard on Maquette and then enjoyed reading everyone’s take on middlebrow prestige indies after that!

You had some specific complaints about it IIRC relating to it being a completely bullshit San Francisco-based prestige indie, or I may have been confusing it/mashing it together in my head with @OneSecondBefore 's post.

possibly! i’ve complained about Annapurna-related things in multiple places here.

the post i was referring to was this one

I also booted up valkyrie profile recently (sorry to say probably because I kept seeing indivisible on sale and decided I’d rather actually play the inspiration) and I’m convinced that people fail to remember it as a classic (it basically cemented both tri-ace and enix USA in the late 90s when they were on the ropes, has spritework as good as any PS1 game, feels good and does enough of its own thing) because the name sounds too generic and it like cancels out half-recollections of vandal hearts and whatever else when trying to call it to mind. none of its sequels were really as good but multiple projects have low-key coasted seemingly on the strength of this one game for like 20 years now.

play valkyrie profile 3: lightning returns

valkyrie profile is an amazing game everyone hates bc tri-ace is an evil company (they use star ocean til the end of time at black sites globally to torture political prisoners) and because getting the true ending without a guide is literally impossible. which also fucking annoys the shit out of me but you know what 90s jrpg can u really even play without a guide half the time anyway. it’s PRETTY and that fuckin sound test tho

oh yeah covid had me so deranged I actually played 4 hours of star ocean meet ‘n’ fuck and i gotta say that i’m praying every day for the people who had to play through that wretched game cuz nothing else existed. what a fucking deranged waifu simulator/bad star trek TNG episode
