Games You Played Today: 13 Going On 30

Ace Combat 2 would have the goldilocks effect compared to 1 and 3 but the latter has its arm so deep in Type 4’s honey (brancing paths!!! ELECTROSPHERE!!!) that even with treaclier movement it remains the superior product and an under-rated PSX object.

The AI in Touhou 20 is so protrusive that ZUN becomes one of the first people ever to do something interesting with it even if it’s the best implementation of a terrible idea. I’m a UFO apologist tho and is his him at his most Ikeda (or Ibara…)

The second UFO 50 game is homework-core.

nvm Eyesight was kind of too confusing and i lost momentum for the combo variants

yeah that’s a common glitch lol. i didn’t do anything to mitigate it from happening so it can easily happen if you go back and forth on the door to the left of where you start too many times. and yes there is no way that you’d know that was the case, i just wasn’t thinking about those sorts of things back then.

I went 4-1 in the first round of the horse game’s inaugural champions meet and I was so excited I went and told my mother the good news. I said “Mom, you’re not gonna believe it, but my ponies won all the races, it was amazing, you would have been so proud of me (and them) if you’d seen it.” And my mother, she said “You have to get a life,” and “I’m going to bed.” This would have hurt my feelings but I won about 50 cents worth of horse game currency so I’m still on top of the world, Ma. Top of the world.

It has been a while since I posted here…I am bad at juggling all my online accounts and using them. Anyways been playing mostly GBA Pokemon (specifically Emerald) and Gamecube mostly Animal Crossing which I have integrated into my daily routine. The Gamecube Animal Crossing is charming in its lack of modern convenience features such as having to mail the fossils in to be told what they are before you can donate them. I don’t play much per day only around an hour or less but it has been rather nice to be honest. Meanwhile Emerald is a blast I’m six badges in and just having a grand old time. Hoenn is one of my favorite regions with one of my favorite crop of Pokemon and I’m just really enjoying it. The grind is actually a really nice chill activity I’m making sure to battle pretty much every trainer in the game which isn’t something I used to do but I’m quite enjoying it and trying to get my team up to where they need to be for each major encounter. I’ve also started back up on Rivals of Aether 2 which is a great Smash Bros alike that I am absolutely terrible at but I want to get better lol. I am very aware it’s pretty much just nostalgia but I do love games either from the Early Aughts or just whatever gives me 6th gen vibes lol.

I started playing Dust: An Elysian Tail because why not. It took a bit but I’ve started to get in tune with it, although I think I’ve had a touch of bad luck in bumping my head against annoying bits. I died a bunch of times on a boss fight that has a pre-fight convo you can skip, but it is really three cutscenes in one so you have to pause and skip three times and deal with all the transition animations each time. Then the time I beat it I seemingly took a simultaneous hit with the boss, so I got to sit through a lengthy deathbed cutscene convo before returning to the game and immediately into my dying animation, sent back to the pre-fight save once more.

Just started Sword of the Sea, the latest from the Journey/Abzu/Pathfinder developer, and it is an absolute banger. Don’t sleep on it if you liked any of those other three games they’ve done. This one combines core elements from each to make something new.

Very intrigued by the changes made to the Pathologic 2 and Marble Nest design that I saw in the Pathologic 3 demo. It’s all there, which is great, but it’s all slightly different in cool, iterative ways. Good to know they kicked out the sex pest behind the scenes and seem to be rallying to make something strong.

where i knew the Echo Point Nova expansion was Great was when i hit the go button on a combat challenge inside a little log fort and a bulldozer with a drill on the front of it blasted through the wall next to me, nearly killing me and sending me flying thru the air. i got my bearings and tried to grapple onto the trees around us to get an angle on the killdozer only for it to start knocking the trees down as i was trying to grab them. one fell right in front of me and in a panic i jumped and managed to land my hoverboard on it, grinding up this massive trunk as it crashed to the ground, putting myself back in the air to get just the right angle to land a grenade launcher shell into the dozer exhaust, blowing it apart

i gracefully landed back in the little fort feeling like the baddest bitch in the world and two more came thru the walls in a pincer attack, killing me instantly

i love the dev commentary at each checkpoint. may we all be as brave as the dev who admits to being influenced by BloodRayne

I’ve heard other people talk about how much they loved using that cheat in bloodrayne it’s good to see its influence can extend beyond her boobies

I got my first gym badge in Pokemon White. It’s weird going back this many generations. Even this few games ago, there was a lot more friction in the gameplay than in Pokemon Ultra Moon or Pokemon X. Manually switching out Pokemon for xp is something I got spoiled on not having to do.

I need to come back to this. I had a decent time playing it last year but it felt sort of hollow after a while. But there’s apparently a real big new expansion.

Still really want a Zelda where Link looks like this by the end of the game.

I forgot that with some (most?) cores on the Mister, it’s not enough to save in a game - you gotta pop the Mister menu so that it saves the save, if that makes any sense.

This is all to say that when I streamed finishing Clanker’s Cavern in Banjo Kazooie and getting 100% of the baubles, I came back and found I had to do it all over again.

Then I did and the game bugged out and didn’t award me the puzzle piece for finding all of those horrid Jinjos so I had to replay the level and find them all again.

Anyway I did most of the next stage and hit the wall that is the alligator eating mini game.

I think Rare games have a sort of inexcusable sickness of the soul. I think there are things to like in Banjo Kazooie but I find parts of it unforgivable.

After that I bounced between some games. There are so many N64 games that pop the Titus logo on boot. Grimmest omen.

I’m trying to imagine the child that got Blues Brothers 2000 for Christmas and died of sadness. It probably happened.

Bomberman 64 seems cool, so does Mischief Makers. I probably need to “RETVRN” and look up scans of the instruction manuals for these things, the 64 has too many dang buttons to just sorta wing it in most of these games.
