a couple of nights ago, I clicked on a random stream and watched someone absolutely crash out over one of the Serious Sam 2 bosses

so now I’m playing Serious Sam 2 again

I’m not going to sit here and lie to you: 2 is probably the worst mainline SS game

this still makes it better than most games, nevermind FPSes

gonna dock it a few points for having an entire goddamn world where 90% of the enemies are kleers though. holy shit fuck kleers

I only play WarioLand 2 in liminal spaces like travel or waiting. Yesterday I was playing it on the plane while sipping a complimentary old fashioned while the guy next to me was on slack and doing work. i nearly memorized the guys name so I could message him on linkedin and tell him to live a little

can finally play the first Panzer Dragoon on this new XBox that unlocks after the Orta campaign! also been replaying Sin & Punishment on a N64 (PEAK) and the sequel (Son of Peak) using a gamecube controller for the latter because idk, the floating characters + kinda washed out shot FX + Wiimote just feels too lightweight…to me. using a “normal” controller wrests back some sense of friction that I think the first game is superior for (among other things like pacing and vibe ha) I mean, holding the N64 analog stick and Z trigger with your right hand and the D-pad and left shoulder button with your left hand…man I miss the hell out of Treasure! also randomly stumbled upon Burning Force rummaging through Wii Homebrew stuff and while it maybe doesn’t rise above Space Harrier-Like much I found it very solid and slick and appreciated those mission breakdowns with the cute characters and maybe I’m not the most educated rail shooter person but was quite impressed with the enemy formations flying in and out of the foreground and background especially for 1989?

(why have I been gravitating towards rail shooters? well, I started a project during a kind of manic three weeks that is a rail…reverse shooter…adventure game…kind of. will post things if it continues to materialise. even though I am still very into it rn I think it’s also a ridiculous ass idea so idk. but this is games played not games developed so)

I also randomly booted up Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure and probably got my fill after 30 minutes but was again pleasantly surprised by some punchy action, sick animations (the motion blur on Goku’s legs and Nyoibō) and an angled dive kick that sustains from even the greatest heights of the level design…though I must admit, I miss the pervy/toilet humour gags that are conspicuously extracted from the all-business story interludes and while I get that Toriyama’s more angular character designs fit Z I do not appreciate that style being retroactively applied to the sagas of young Goku!

also, I have finally tasted Galleon, which I played for about three hours two months before all of the above (have been very scattershot about vgames) and will get back into and write more about because: what a “link that missed the chain” marvel it is. even if I sense that some of the mid elements (combat) might grate over time, Toby Gard’s post-Tomb Raider, post-we-live-in-a-SM64-world-now approach to Moving A Character In 3D Space is instantly endearing to my personal vgame fixations. get your guy running a bit and go real fast! big John The Baptist-to-Crackdown’s-Jesus Christ jumps! wild ass wall running as the camera corkscrews to keep up, echoes of Sonic Adventure’s this-thing-feels-like-it-could-fly-apart-at-any-second jank! torpedo-man swimming! and then they spray you in the face with cold water by asking you to apply a feather light touch to the analog stick to navigate narrow paths. run across them and you’ll most likely fall off but if you go slow, your character will auto-stick to the path. it’s that “Mario tiptoes up to a sleeping Piranha Plant” brave new toy thing except…8 years after that game! is it fun having to slam on the brakes and navigate those segments? not exactly. but I admire the hell out of the intentionality of the gesture towards a once exciting conversation that was happening. except by the time Galleon chimed in the conversation had shifted and shelled up a bit and a lot of people exchanged awkward side glances and “WTF?s” or really mostly ignored it but not me, Toby. I get it. I’m smiling at your quixotic quipping at a calcified conversation and I’m delighted

(this is not very representative of the above but it’s all I’ve captured of Galleon so far)

How are you playing Star Successor normal style?

Played Slot Waste, which I guess could be described as as a slightly interactive experimental short film about… idk, an utterly bizarre assembly line/rube goldberg machine. Not enough game there to really rate as such but oddly detailed and effective at creating a rather uncomfortable, somewhat transfixing mood. Plus it has tongue dog thing:

pretty much default gcube setup with the aim speed cranked all the way up (left trigger to evade and right trigger to shoot (click right to lock on), moving the character with the analog stick and aiming with the C-stick which…well honestly none of the controls schemes feels perfect to me ha, I tried flipping the left and right sticks cuz the left seemed smoother to aim with but I could not get my brain/hands to deal with that

NOLF ends in a row of endearingly junky out-of-development-time feeling bossfights; there’s also a part i totally forgot where the heroine gets injected with a bomb chemical whose side effect is burping, so there’s part of the last few levels where you’re running around making huge cartoon belch sounds ambiently. congrats to the person to whom this came as a delightful surprise.
it turns out i still like this game a lot… i feel like if i try to work out what seperates a good action game from a bad one for me, it’s maybe a sense of faint scepticism about its own mechanics, the sense of someone reaching in impatiently to goose things along a bit rather than just calibrating the systems right and leaving it alone. i remember NOLF2 feeling a bit more systemically thorough and self-contained in a way that sort of leeched energy out of everything around it, but maybe that’s unfair… regardless give me carny games or give me death

afterwards i watched the lithtech engine demo, which is 2 minutes of the game’s hunk character dancing on a reflective floor set to a slightly creepy looped track of giggling and crowd noises. incredible pantseat texture.

it’s inspired by some old weird wolf 3d set called Temporary Insanity, also the music for that map is by Chris Chokan who made another famous old weird wolf 3d set called Chokage

edit: oh forgot to mention it’s also somewhat inspired by the final Reactor level of Schabbs 2000, a popular wolf3d set. i was too young to not rip off a lot of different people at once lol.

So the NES copy of Wizardry I got the other day had a dead battery, so the tensest game I played today is “Can Chris Solder On A New Battery?” and the answer appears to be YEAH!

I know this is an easy solder for people who solder shit, but this is the first successful soldering I have ever done so fuck yeah me. Now I have like 6 other carts to do when I feel like it.

Turns out I got a glitch… The Hitler wall stopped moving forward, but the secret one on the starting elevator kept going all the way to the back creating a massive hallway until it crashed lol

Luckily I had a save from the previous level, so I redid that one and level 29 seems to be working correctly now

okay so I finished up SS2

I don’t remember it being this easy and I’m not poking through patch notes to see if they made it easier. I refuse to believe I’ve gotten better at shootmans over the past 15 or so years

the last level has a par time of 1 hour and it’s as gloriously stupid and obnoxious as this would imply

Midway Arcade Treasures 3 doesn’t work on the MemCardPro2 OPL oh no.

The Adventure Island PS2 is hideous.

Here’s my crucified opinion: I don’t like how arbitrary the AI in Ridge Racer V is how it will just refuse to let you advance placement in a race regardless of what happens or how well you do. And some of the songs are very bad. And my hands hurt so I can’t play it for very long.
