Those later versions had a lot of other enhancements and changes over the original FC/NES versions, to make them more like the arcade version; enemies in the 1993 PAL version move even faster than they did in the arcade version:

My Virtual Boy that I got in lieu of the Super Nintendo I wanted because it was $35 on clearance has succumbed to the ribbon cable rot. There are fixes but I’m nowhere near good enough at soldering and, really, I should just put the energy to trying to get the VR emulator working outside of Oculus again, it really is perfect fix for a weird display in a way DS’s or Wii U’s might never get.
