That whole game terrifies me. It’s like arcade turbo Ms. Pac-Man, which is wrong enough, but with disturbingly large ghosts, weird colors and sounds, and… It’s just not right. = oo

Looks a little cumbersome to play, kind of like

Turned-based tactical JRPG, published by Square, developed by Sting Entertainment (still going with remasters and stuff on Japanese mobiles & Switch)



Planet Harriers (Sega, arcade, 2000)

I guess Sega never felt this would make $ in a port. Gets flashy. Weird supposedly character play-through here where they zoom into first-person after a minute and play through almost entirely like that–but I guess it probably helps. Maybe that’s part of the problem with the game?



Popeye: Ijiwaru Majo Seahag no Maki (“Popeye: The Tale of Seahag the Wicked Witch,” SFC)

More Technos Japan. Platformer, hit bugs with an anchor. Sort of enjoyably bizarre to watch at least.

But then there’s

Sorta slow but this actually looks pretty rad.

Tetris (Game Boy)

The main soundtrack for Tetris was created by Nintendo’s accomplished composer Hirokazu Tanaka.[13] The player can select one of three types of background music during the game or play with sound effects only. Two of the songs are arrangements of works from other composers: “Type A” is based on the Russian folk song “Korobeiniki” (also known as “Korobushka”), and “Type C” is an arranged version of “French Suite No. 3 in B minor, BWV 814: Menuet” (transposed to F# minor) by Johann Sebastian Bach.[14][15] In an early version that was only released in Japan with an estimated 25,000 copies sold, the “Type A” song is “Minuet”.

The earlier, 1.0 version has the highest spire of the domes in the sticker art sticking up between the two LLs in “ALL” in the sticker’s small print, whereas the 1.1 version has the spire slightly to the left of that. The 1.0 version does not have dashes in “BULLET PROOF” on the legalese screen at start-up.

Glad I checked on this 'cause I was mulling over a JP version since those go for slightly less (I mean like $12 instead of $17 or more) on eBay–but I can’t risk missing that Type-A music! = oo Although, I guess it would be interesting to have. Some sellers do label it the 1.0 or 1.1 version, and in theory their photos might actually be of their actual cart rather than a template photo… And mostly the 1.0 versions list for like $60. So I guess you could resell it at a profit if you wanted if you thought you were getting the 1.1 version and got the 1.0 instead and didn’t want to hang on to it for the novelty of the thing.

The Death and Return of Superman (SNES, 1994)

is the first game by Blizzard Entertainment–at least, under that name. Their first game was the 1991 PC port of Battle Chess, when they were known as “Silicon & Synapse.”

TDaRoS currently goes for a bit more than one might think for a slightly mediocre-looking SNES beat-em-up. I wonder if the Blizzard name has anything to do with that.

At 1320 lines, NES Tetris’ colors glitch out

Eventually the colors got hard to see

It’s due to a bug in the block color selection algorithm: Applying Artificial Intelligence to Nintendo Tetris

i saw someone play through this on youtube recently and i’m obsessed with it. it’s a totally rote psychological walking sim thingy featuring sad dead wife guy but whenever your character encounters a puzzle like situation, you press the action key to pull out a tiny, bipedal mouse named Quintus and ask it to help… whereupon it slowly walks away, solves the problem, and you press the button to pick it up again… no further input is involved and you don’t have a Quintus special meter or anything to decide when you can use the mouse. somebody thought that hitting a button to make a little 3d mouse slowly lerp away to solve an environment puzzle on your behalf was an exciting enough feature to be the main part of the game. and they were right, this person is a genius. i love Quintus and look forward to the day that gamers demand a default Quintus button in every game, like the jump key, even in games where the presence of Quintus has not previously been implied.
