Card Sharks (Accolade - C64, 1988)

Ronny, Maggie, and Gorby play some hands of cards.

Art by Mimi Doggett (Law of the West, etc).

Star Citizen is a little wild, in this video the narrator explains

  1. he bought and then lost the most expensive ship in Star Citizen, but won’t explain the circumstances
  2. he is considered a criminal in Star Citizen
  3. to clear his wanted level he has to hack a satellite that’s in orbit
  4. in order to hack it he has to spacewalk to it because if he gets too it’s defense systems will detect his ship and blow it up
  5. The reason he has to hack this so no one in the system will see his movements when he breaks into a data center to hack the criminal database and remove his wanted level
  6. he gives up on the spacewalk after 30 minutes and goes for the data center, is immediately killed
  7. wakes up in a prison and spends 2+ hours mining to get a reduced sentence

The entire time he spends in game running from one terminal to another. If you want to buy something in Star Citizen you have to land on the planet, park your ship, then take a tram and wait in real time to get to the mall, where you walk up to a kiosk to buy a ship or trade materials.

In another video (where he buys the most expensive ship in the game) he gets so lost in the new ship’s hallways that it’s almost impounded because he spent too much time in an active landing bay before taking off.

I find this game fascinating and terrifying.

the best part of that video is where he tries to enter a hatch way up on the side of the ship but it isn’t designed properly so he starts having a freakout because he’s afraid of heights irl and then decides maybe if he takes all his clothes off he’ll be able to get into the janky hatch

after a few minutes of faffing with the hatch and freaking out about it, he falls off the ship and dies

sooooo many gemstone players love star citizen. like they’re a group of people whos favorite feature of a game is pay to win. its so alien, but it’s fucking fascinating yeah

always wanted to have at least some sort of grasp on what playing star citizen looks like - rather than just news stories about real money from players or investors - so excited to sit down and watch this

My girlfriend is one of those pay-to-win community-game enjoyers and the way she put it to me is that it creates particularly subjective and dynamic status hierarchies, where every player is able to feel they are somehow the best kind of player. The big spenders obviously are on the literal top of the leaderboards, the free-to-play grinders take pride in their patience, determination and self-abnegation, and the budget players (including her) take pride in their efficiency and eye for good deals.

In a fair competitive game, people end up feeling humbled when they lose. In a pay-to-win the system is rigged and everyone knows it so it doesn’t feel nearly as bad to get stomped on: you figure they probably wasted more money than you, and paradoxically feel superior instead.

yeah in gemstone it just created resentment between the rich and the poor and got too much like real life. everyone displaying their reasoning that they were actually the best player based on how much they do or don’t spend on the game, how their method of spending/playing was more moral or effecient. it was so stressful.

also the sneak spenders were incredibly depressing

Regularly in awe about how Elite Dangerous actually came out and is an actually playable actual videogame and how much it clowns on this hopium den

idk elite dangerous is kind of boring … or … idk it’s fun until you get enough money to buy the ship you want and then all the stuff they put in to try to make the game last longer is not very good.

im ok with boring tho and learning about the size and morphology of the galaxy i live in was very interesting.

on the other hand, elite dangerous came out in 2014

Two games I just learned existed: Red Dog: Superior Firepower (DC) and Hybrid Heaven (N64).

Huh the devs put the Red Dog source code on GitHub this past September: GitHub - mattgodbolt/reddog: Final resting place of the source to Argonaut Dreamcast game Red Dog Superior Firepower
