D2 as in Destiny 2? if so I remember reading how Luke Smith was really into Wow, enough so that he got some uber rare gear on one very popular server, which explained a lot of Destiny’s design ethos to me.
yep! likewise many of its paratextual guide “content creators” were wow people
the epigraph at the top of the video (turning a world back into a database) piqued my interest
oh shit the last time you could change your simcity 2000 worlds to 3D was Streets of Simcity
ah haha, they put in a neat easter egg as a call back to NFS Most Wanted. You even drive the M3 GTR in the mission too.
Aliens (Activision version - C64)
Had this as a kid. The opening is so effective–love the music and the minimalist presentation.
The Last Ninja (C64)
Rocking music and I love the way the screens draw in. That reminds me of World Class Leaderboard, which I think MIGHT have been the golf game I had on C64 back in the day:
halo ce is so endlessly replayable, they really snapped when they made that one
All the music from these games is great but man that one track from Last Ninja 2 is such a brutal banger
A rager! It’s ridiculous how hard they went on some of those C64 tracks. OH. I just realized the first half especially sounds a lot like Rob Hubbard’s soundtrack to International Karate from two years prior–The Last Ninja series had different composers–2 on C64 was Matt Gray–but working for the same design house, System 3.
[Washington DC] John Romero and John Carmack, who both invented the FPS at ID Software, have reunited and released a joint statement denouncing the Justin Roiland “Rick and Morty” FPS (“High On Life” 2022).
“All those years ago when making 3D graphics, I never thought that they would lead to the cultural nadir that is the Mick and Rorty game” - Carmack
“I used to have a saying at Ion Storm, that “Design is Law” well, that was wrong. If I had a time machine, I would un make doom, in my opinion” - Romero
Tim “Epic” Sweeny - creator of ZZT and the unreal engine, had this to say
“I wanted to empower game developers to create wild worlds and experiences and not have to listen to Justin Morty yell at me for 8 straight hours, I wish we had not approved their licensee agreement, I simply did not think they would go through with such a concept. We have made the decision to discontinue the Unreal engine to avoid a sequel” - . Sweeny
Phil Spencer, head of Xbox at microsoft also had this to say
“Here at Xbox we are led by 3 pillars, those are: Player Experience, Innovation, and Player Experience. Player Experience is on there twice because it’s twice as important as Innovation. When we released “High on Life with Rick and Morty” for the Xbox Games Pass we lost sight of those values. All of our metrics and data told us that it would be a slam dunk. Turns out the real slam dunk would have been to fully fund a new Steel Battalion. We are in contact with the original Steel Battalion developers to create a new game, with an all new controller. We hope this title will harness the power of the xbox and be a delight to players old and new alike.”
Justin “rick and morty” Roiland was reached for comment and had this to say
“It is simply my life’s mission to be the most annoying shit on planet earth. I do the annoying voices all the time and nobody can stop me. I get money for doing the annoying voices. I will never stop-”
that first one is one of the funniest things i’ve ever seen holy shit
