I went to a music store, Waltz

in search of fun tapes but all the tapes were $25-30 regular assed American music and also some jazz stuff, half a dozen jdm reissues.

they had some nicely arranged but mostly boring and extremely overpriced boom boxes

But they did have a slightly overpriced copy of this Hosono release

I didn’t buy it but I did listen to it on their turntable so that was fun

I spent some time last week tuning up my Braun PS500 so it is in mostly serviceable order now. It had sat unused because the default suspension setup was sagging and caused the platter to rub on the plinth, a result of the oil-dampers for the spring units leaking over time. I finally grasped how to fully adjust the suspension height, after breaking loose some nuts that I only just now realized were locked in place by the factory. Raise them bad boys up high enough and the dampers don’t matter…or help. Which means it’s oversprung; if you bounce around on the floor nearby or other big swinging movements it can’t deal well, but small fast knocks on the chassis are fine.

But, the actual hot tip:

I also got one of these in the aftermath. It works good. I feel foolish for the years trying to perfect sweeping angles and motion with a carbon brush. It’s just some stikcy silicone, you rinse it with water afterwards and good as new. <$15. All the brands seem the same.

My dark record secret: I just wash dirty ones in the sink with my hands and dish soap. Get the labels wet and everything. I’ve thought about getting some label savers but haven’t.

this man is a genius i like his vibe

I still don’t have a record player but I bought Turtles in Time immediately. Still need to get Silent Hill 2.

I’m tempted to get the Celeste soundtrack and/or the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack on vinyl, but I will probably just keep telling myself that it’s too much to spend on something that I already have in a more convenient format until they become unavailable (like I did with that Shadow of the Colossus one).

There isn’t currently a single video game soundtrack in my (tiny) vinyl collection. Maybe I should pick up at least one at some point.

Jeeez, i found out too late that there has been a SotC Vinyl… ah well, at least i don’t have to buy yet another new HiFi component, since i have been holding off on getting a player for a good while now.

Musicians and gaming nerds Gaijin Blues (Naphta and Playstation Yoga Music) continue to leave their controllers aside and pay respects to the greatest video games ever made…but this time they’re going one step further into the adventure…with a full-length 8 track concept LP.

Inspired by Japanese Role Playing Games and a love of all things Super Nintendo and of course Japanese pop culture, Gaijin Blues brought you their debut EP in early 2019. After touring in the Far East and some serious hours playing games such as Dragon Quest V, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, VII and IX, the Shin Megami Tensei series and Phantasy Star IV, the boys concocted an EP of samples, live instrumentation and programming as a love note that you’d never find inside a game box…until now.

Gaijin Blues II takes you a step further. With this LP the guys have created their own fictional JRPG and then devised an end to end narrative with the music weaved around it all. You can buy the disk but what you don’t get is a controller…you’ll need to use your ears instead.

In the words of the creators themselves: “This is a sequel to a story you’ve never experienced. You are the protagonist who is coming back home to see his world completely changed by seemingly harmless technology. Each track is a chapter in this tale. Collect the items, gather a party and use your wit and imagination to find out the truth. Because technology usually comes at a price…”

This about as conceptual as it gets: where a brand new story matched with an audio narrative meet together in a fictional world. In terms of electronic music that doesn’t happen often. Gaijin Blues II is a truly unique record whether you’ve ever owned a console or not.

That’s some record. Too bad it’s so expensive, but I can see why it is.
