FPGA World Tour

N64 core is uh…mostly playable now.

i can’t stop playing it!

Mickey’s Speedway USA has some texture weirdness and flickering letters but is otherwise super close

F-Zero X is near-perfect

shit keeps advancing real fast! exciting

Rogue Squadron is playable:

Only 12.5% of the US library fails to boot at this time (37/297 games).

Excited for this core

once this thing’s fully cooked, if it turns out as good as it looks thus far… i can’t see myself intentionally using software emulators for N64 again

it already feels so good and the N64 doesn’t have native RGB out so just having this clean HDMI image with such low latency and freedom to use/remap any USB/BT controller, not having to worry about controller paks and shit… this is a game-changer for me

The RGB mod for N64 is really easy, but admittedly does require soldering.

those bbond007 projects that run on the HPS (ARM CPU attached to the FPGA) are cool, and I do actually use the ScummVM “port” to MiSTer he maintains, but i would strongly recommend using a PC for BasiliskII - the MiSTer CPU just isn’t powerful enough to do much. if you want a color mac experience that actually uses the FPGA, you can use ShapeShifter on Minimig, which is a whole other can of worms, but it does play games and use the scaler, etc. trying to play games on that bas2 port was not a good time.

I had just learned about shapeshifter, and it’s page says:

Is ShapeShifter actually still better?

in context, extremely yes.

if you just want to do 68k mac stuff, do Bas2 on your PC. that’s the context what you’re looking at is referring to.

ShapeShifter runs on Amiga. so… like most Amiga software, it isn’t supported any longer and if you are using a PC, you’d have no reason to ever look at this. thus the text you’re citing.

if you want to use the FPGA and have a good experience on the MiSTer specifically, probably wait until someone makes a core. otherwise, yes, ShapeShifter is infinitely better. it can actually play games at a reasonable framerate, uses the scaler and all the MiSTer functionality…

just to be clear, the bbond007 stuff is all just software emulators running on the MiSTer’s dual-core 800MHz ARM CPU. outside of ScummVM i really wouldn’t recommend that stuff. in my eyes it’s kind of a neat curiosity to be able to do a bit more with the device, but it is really a vastly worse experience than you’ll get in nearly any proper core - or by using the same software on a PC. it’s just underpowered software emulation with minimal features at that point

i’ve spoken to bbond about this and a major reason for porting bas2 and vmac to the MiSTer was so he can load his hardfiles and moves files around from the Linux filesystem and make things available in the (macplus and minimig) cores directly on the MiSTer. i don’t think even he really uses them otherwise

he also ported prboom to the HPS, but that was when the ao486 core was in a worse place. you can get a pretty solid experience now with fastdoom, which reduces the value of that port as well. prboom might have a better framerate than fastdoom on the ao486 core, but it won’t use the scaler or various other MiSTer functions

here’s my google doc for my Mac stuff: MacPlus resources - Google Docs

there’s a link at the top with my ShapeShifter files

A reimagining of the N64.
4K resolution.
Original Display Modes.
Reference quality recreations of specific model CRT’s and PVM’s.

The first and only aftermarket solution supporting 100% compatility in every region. USA, EU & JP.

Coming in 2024.

they misspelled “compatibility” on their product page. also the fine print at the bottom says “1. Analogue 3D does not support openFPGA” which means this product holds zero interest for me whatsoever, lol

pretty sure that “first and only aftermarket solution supporting 100% compatility [sic] in every region” is meant to have enough qualifiers to be marginally true, but nonetheless is just an outright lie…?

is an aftermarket solution supporting 100% compatibility in every region.

ain’t no way their n64 fpga box is gonna have 4K resolution unless there’s a big fat asterisk stating that the image is upscaled from the games’ internal rendering resolutions

anyhow, i can’t wait for the initial wave of preorders to be fulfilled in 2026

i mean a jailbreak will probably come along eventually

that said, yeah, i don’t really feel a strong need for this one. i guess if someone really wanted to play N64 stuff on their 4K
