ahh but jailbreak is not the same as openFPGA. if this thing could support the latter, they’d probably advertise that… on the pocket, there is an additional FPGA chip for openFPGA. i’m guessing this product does not have that. it’ll be like the Super Nt where kevtris will release a jailbreak at some point which can load N64 roms.
no openFPGA means no extra cores. the only Analogue products which lacked openFPGA but had extra cores are the Nt minis
if you want to play N64 on a 4K TV you should definitely just consider a MiSTer, though. i’ve been playing N64 on my 4K TV every day and the core isn’t even totally done yet. this Analogue product might, whenever it actually releases, be a similarly good experience to what a MiSTer (or an HDMI-modded N64 if you need cart support) does today, but it’ll only do that…
it does claim 4K output, while the MiSTer only does 1080p and a couple sort of hacky versions of 1440p (1920x1440 or 2560x1440 via pixel repetition). this is nice for getting absolutely perfectly sharp pixels on a 4K display - which is generally not really a great look on the N64, lol. of course, the extra resolution will probably be put to good use for integer scaling and CRT shaders, so it’s definitely still a plus… just funny that the first 4K output product from Analogue is the one with the extremely blurry native presentation
one very irritating thing about Analogue is that they market on claims of perfect compatibility, but it’s an obvious lie as soon as you start digging into it - there are tons of little bugs and glitches and issues that have to be ironed out via firmware updates. then, after the initial activity dies down, you better hope that everything you want to play is fixed, because subsequent updates are thin on the ground. for example, there were jailbreak firmware updates for Super Nt and Mega Sg in summer of this year, but those were the first firmware updates for those devices since 2021. the update before that, for both, was 2019.
i am very interested in the teased 8bitdo N64 pad, though. looks like the retro fighters pad (which is a good shape but i don’t like that company’s stuff) …hopefully it gets one of their better build quality treatments
yeah idk i think if i want to play N64 stuff, it’ll be on a CRT, in which case i’ll just use my original N64, or the Mister (haven’t actually checked the 64 core out yet, though).
my favorite Analogue stuff has been the NT Mini Noir, the Super NT, and the Pocket. the first two because they make certain hardware stuff easier, like hooking up a Famicom Disk System, or playing PAL carts on my CRT. the Pocket is just a really nice handheld.
there is now confirmation (made on the MiSTer discord by Robert Peip, the dev behind the MiSTer N64 core, based on him corresponding with the dev of the new core) that this newly announced “Analogue 3D” N64 core is the work of Mazamars312 (Murray Aickin) · GitHub - the core has been in the works for quite a few years and has been known around the FPGA community by its development name UltraFP64.
seems this work will not be released publicly as surely Analogue has paid for exclusivity*. glad Robert stepped up to make an open-source implementation…
*important to note that mazamars has been contributing knowledge he’s gleaned from his work in the last few years with N64 reverse-engineering to the N64brew repository
Reimagining the N64 with 100 percent compatibility and accuracy, and what I know is necessary for it to be just like the experience we all had when we first played it in the context it was created for (CRTs, namely), is not something anyone has achieved, not even close to
god, taber is such a fucking goober
who wants to make a bet that this product will not, in fact, have “100% compatibility and accuracy”
Because the console is region-free, we also asked if it had an extension port on the bottom for connecting the Japan-only 64DD accessory. Taber told us that it didn’t but that there were “multiple other ways to connect it and community-made solutions” for people who want to play 64DD content on the Analogue 3D.
i guess they are hoping to outsource stuff (thinking about their weird little riser for the Sega CD so it sits flat when connected to a Mega Sg) to random community folks, and up the ante to “include a connector for obscure old hardware”
guessing this is in the same vein, just much more complex. 64DDs are pretty rare and expensive so i don’t know how much demand for this project there will actually be, which might throw a spanner in the works
guarantee on my life this Analogue 3D will not in any way be a “transistor-level replica” holy fucking shit the marketing gives people actual brainworms
note: the only games in the US library that boot but aren’t yet “playable” are (according to the spreadsheet): Conker, Indiana Jones, Jet Force Gemini, and Battle for Naboo
there are still some other games with major issues; e.g. polaris snocross crashes before you can really do much, bangaioh crashes right after finishing level one, there’s a japanese fishing game that crashes when you cast the line, shiren doesn’t save properly yet…
after setting it up, things i immediately noticed:
where the hell is the controller. why do i always forget they don’t ship with the 8BitDo controller and that was only an NT Noir thing? oof. ok, well.
why is the screen kind of flashing? oh, haha no DAC support, yet.
so, hooked it up to the Vizio, and it works. loaded up the only PCE games i personally own:
Dracula X, Double Dragon II, and Ys IV
they all work! lol
so, right now, i’d have to say, until i expand my Hucard collection, and until there is DAC support, this one feels like it will be the slowest burn out of the box of any Analogue product i’ve purchased.
i figured it probably could! i think for now, i’ll wait on the jailbreak.
i also do want some more physical media - i had always wanted to get a Turbo Duo, but it was always too expensive at the times i wanted it most. this machine is basically the answer to that old dream.
i almost picked up the Turbo Everdrive before my Duo came in, but thankfully i did not since it apparently doesn’t fit!
Ironically I think it was my barely using my Mega Sg and the announcement of the Duo that finally drove me to just get a Mister. They’ve been cookin’ that Duo up for a while!
I did use the 8Bitdo controllers with the TG-16 Mini, they’re not bad.
Makes me excited to see what controller 8Bitdo cranks out for their N64…using an Xbox style 8Bitdo pad with Mister is fine I guess, but if it could be closer to the real deal, that’d…be pretty good.
