i just clicked on twitch to watch some fuckboi gaming and one of the ads was the Aerith voice actor playing the game for the first time? and she’s playing the flower talking scene the first time? and she’s crying talking about it
I’m a sucker for genuine parents (read: not the kind that have to murder people to protect their family but can just be good people) and tough guys with hearts of gold, so Barret is bae
I’ve been enjoying the part of Chapter 14 where the plot slows down and you get to do like 10 extremely interconnected sidequests at a rapid clip. It’s neat the way they situate everything, so with any given action you’re advancing two or three sidequests at the same time. It’s a great way to keep this sort of thing interesting.
Same! After it gave me the “Warning once you enter the Shinra building you won’t be able to exit until you’re done” message I was like oh guess it’s time for some more sidequests.
I’ve almost done all the Chadley challenges. Tried tackling Leviathan and got owned so I probably need to gain a few levels first. Currently at the gym doing pull up challenges. Just need to beat the Pro level and that’s another champion belt in my inventory.
Spells seem overpowered in this game. Striking the enemy’s elemental weakness always does more damage than anything else and you don’t need to worry about positioning. And at this point (chapter 7) hi-potions are a remarkable waste of money and ATB compared to casting cure/cura.
When I started to understand the battle system I realized, “ah, it’s Secret of Mana, but they balanced it”. And now I’m starting to question the “they balanced it” part.
anyway, the good news is that it does start to add a few more complications to that strategy right after the point you’re currently at – you have fewer characters for a while and actually managing to equip all four elemental materia becomes nontrivial, increasingly many enemies rotate their weaknesses or interrupt your casting or just don’t have elemental weaknesses, mp runs down faster in longer fights, etc.
it actually does a pretty good job throughout of never really being too challenging but managing to introduce enough wrinkles to stay engaging, I continue to be impressed by how thorough they’ve been in trying not to alienate their audience while modernizing this thing
Yeah, I noticed Reno didn’t have any elemental weaknesses. What an annoying fight, basically the Marauder of this game. I had to unlearn my expert Sekiro style and fight him in the idiotic way they intended
I died to him three times in the church. I just did some googling to figure out what might account for the difference, and it looks like the problem is I was sticking to operator mode, and apparently there is a really strong block counterattack in punisher. I suppose that’s why it was called Punisher all along!?
OK, I guess I dug my own hole on that one. I should have thought of using punisher if only for the DPS after realizing there wasn’t much need for mobility
i feel like the reno church fight is one of the first fights that really teaches you to read your opponent and exercise restraint. i died once and then held back and blocked more, looking for openings, which he provided.
just got to wall market and… whatever flaws this game has, big or small, there’s so much to love here… so many little flourishes of character development, so much new embellishment to the setting, tiny little things that are hitting my emotions just right—and not always in a comfy nostalgic way! i love it when a subquest goes well and people are nice and pleased until cloud says something insensitive and they get all pissed off and call him a dick who only cares about money.
this feels like a real final fantasy game, which… aside from 14, none of them really have, to me, for a very long time. i do kinda want to grab 15 while it’s on sale and give it another chance. but uhhh yeah this remake has been a real treat so far.
amusingly, immediately after cloud pissed off the sad old man and his friend was when i triggered aerith saying “isn’t is so nice to help people??” while still standing right next to the two pissed off dudes.
I had Cloud in punisher mode at all times when I was playing, just switching out to move around quickly if I needed to. Better dps + stagger damage and the counterattack is really useful.
