Final Fantasy 7: The Original, The Remake, The Legacy

the “remake of how you remember it” stuff is like the classic stages in sonic mania. they had a massive graphical upgrade from the originals, in terms of detail and the amount of colours, and so on. but a lot of people (including me) didn’t even notice until screenshots were put side-by-side with the originals. they’d done such a good job of making it how we remembered, rather than how it actually was.

i dont know cloud is completely jacked im ff7r and in the original he picks up zack’s buster sword before he’s even tested on

he also does this before he’s ever fucked with

In Crisis Core (lol) Cloud passes the physical for SOLDIER but not the psych. Plus Jenova cells.

“How did Tifa know he was in town?”

Note that Cloud has a hard time remembering his name here. Tifa says it for him and he rolls with it. If she hadn’t said anything he would have said his name is Zack. He’s “going away” for the Reunion in North Crater, along with the other Sephiroth Copies.

The self-deception stuff reminds me of SH2 and it’s the first game I can think of where our protagonist is emotionally weak, which is ironic considering Cloud is idolized by a generation of teenagers that didn’t understand he was using a persona to cover his insecurities. It also makes him human and relatable in a way most other RPG protagonists aren’t.

My biggest fear was having 7R being made to match up with Advent Children in tone, aesthetics and overall disposable elements. Thankfully it hasn’t been that but the ending sequence feels a little to close to my liking. To me FF7 was a very grounded world. Flight was rare and ships were valuable. I like wuxia fights as much as the next guy but it doesn’t feel like FF7 to me. I’ll buy 10ft jumps. 20ft might pass in climactic moments but 30 and more is were I kinda stop unless there is clearly magic involved. I mean, look at everyone’s boots. Those are stomping boots, not jumping boots.

But yes, I’m still kinda miffed Cloud floats when he dashes in Smash Bros. Cloud knows how to haul ass with his own legs. Don’t give the animators any slack.

I still hope that they do VI in this style when these are all done like five years from now

and maybe give the bravely default team V now that they’ve spent a decade doing other stuff since IV

I don’t think the Bravely Default team worked on Final Fantasy IV.

What if a remake of VI looked like Octopath Traveller? I’d probably accept that.

i fuckin’ wouldn’t!!!

I wonder if Square will ever make Final Fantasy XVI, or if like everyone else in entertainment, reviving, remaking, and remixing established stories and characters are the way forward.

Ever since seeing the CG produced for the PSX release, I have never wanted to see the world of FFVI move into 3D. I’m amazed that the tone of FFVII came through so well in the remake, but I’m wholly unconvinced FFVI would suffer so well.

But I was deeply skeptical of FF7R, so, y’know, whatever the fuck.

I want to see FFXVI, though, because, well, I liked FFXV a lot, I liked FF7R a lot, I’m for some reason planning to play through nearly every FF game I missed in the next few months, and… I like it when numbers go up.

I think there will most definitely be a FFXVI. Maybe not for a while unless they expand and add more teams to make more games simultaneously or figure out how to bring costs down (I think FFXV ultimately broke even eventually after a decade of development and $150+ million spent).

But eventually some day there will be a game called Final Fantasy XVI.

I hope FFXVI is another mmo and they reuse all their ff7r midgar assets for it

I have had a thoroughly great time with this. I remember that Barrett especially and Tifa to a lesser degree kind of faded into the background of the original game toward the end even when it kept trying to give them primacy (eg around Junon) since they just weren’t always the best choices to have in your party and I almost can’t imagine that happening here, the core cast is just so tight
