If they remake FF6 it ought to have a soft painterly style with muted colors, flowing textile costumes and slightly sad faces. I do not trust today’s Squeenix to see things that way so I am opposed to the idea of remaking it
Whenever I propel myself forward in this game I scream “MCDONALDS MCDONALDS MCDONALDS!”
It totally has that philosophy, like, don’t think too hard, very few choices matter, follow the plot rails and just unleash your id and have a good time with some fast food.
tifa is broke as fuck in the original, always the best choice after getting her ‘powersoul’ weapon in mt. nibel
feel like the people involved in xiv really ‘get’ the old games and could be trusted with vi
I mean, the sixteenth numbered sequel shows a company with vast experience in IP conservatism. They’re deeper and faster into remakes than any games studio I know and these days their most original stuff comes out under their prestige brand name.
The last fully original, made-from-whole-cloth FF was 13.
It’s been so long since they had to invent an entirely new Final Fantasy from scratch that I genuinely think they’ve forgotten how
also the last one that wasn’t in development hell was 19 years ago, and the last one that wasn’t in development hell and was good was 20 years ago
idk, just give it to Platinum and let them run free.
Or, wait:
Yoko Taro Fantasy XVI: [P]hoenix lets you down.
… i’d play the hell out of that.
What about 15?
It was a spinoff of 13
lol
Oh that’s a pretty high bar then. Like Secret of Mana was first in development as a Final Fantasy game, I don’t think that makes the finished product not an original thing…
Secret of Mana was always its own thing, as Seiken Densetsu 2. The previous title in that series (JP - Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden; US - Final Fantasy Adventure; UK - Mystic Quest) was given a reference to FF in some fairly superficial ways, just as a brand-recognition ride-along.
FF15 was intended to be a spinoff of 13 in the same way that Type-0 was until basically the 11th hour, when Nomura was finally fired from the project for taking too damn long. The new project boss, Tabata, wrapped up the loose ends, and did a CTRL+F for any mention of “fal’Cie” and replaced it with “Eidolon”, scribbled out “Versus XIII” on the cover art and replaced it with “XV”, and kicked it out the door.
Oh I didn’t realize it was already that far in development before they changed it. Secret of Mana did begin development as FFIV, and for a brief time it was also called Chrono Trigger. But that was all very early on.
Before playing FF7R I absolutely never would have wanted square to remake ff6, and if they DID i’d have wanted it to be 2d and retain a classic style to some extent. But now? I am one hundred percent down for them to do the ff7r treatment to 6. 7R is so fully realized and aesthetically/tonally coherent, it DOESNT exactly feel like the original but it also DOESNT just feel like a modern AAA game–it’s got style and verve and they absolutely Knew What They Were Doing with it, and if they could bring that same confidence and boldness and care to a 6 remake I’d eat it up. Of course I wouldn’t want it to look or play like 7r, it would need a different coherent and fully-developed Vibe that fits that game just as well as R’s fits 7
EDIT: theres a nonzero chance it would suck and I’d hate it! But like, I feel like it would be a worthy and intereting work of art whether it ends up being good or bad, it wouldn’t be a fucken affront to the original game
Did you know that the beloved catches phrase “this is the future of eat dots” originally originated when, during a demonstration of the prototype PlayStation 1 version of Katamari Damacy, a junior producer noticed the hardware’s polygonal facilities pushed to their absolute limits in attempting to render basic clusters of untextured spheroids.
square’s been regularly making new & excellent FFs for the last few years, they’re just putting them inside their MMO lol
through the darkness of levels past
the pac’ed man longs for meat
one slips from amongst four ghosts
dots…of future eat
i think the thing going around is naoki yoshida of ffxiv fame is involved with ffxvi. i dunno how true it is or how it’ll pan out but i also hope natsuko ishikawa is involved. basically just have the entire mvps of the ffxiv dev team work on ffxvi lol
anyway after finishing this game last night i have returned to it to Try and Do Everything
