They should look and fully animate exactly the same, but their mouths shouldn’t move and the lines should be in a text box instead
These are exactly the opinions I would expect you two to hold.
yeah an entire jrpg script voiced in any language is not my idea of a good time. badly/poetically translated text boxes forever
I was so much happier to expand brief text boxes into the epics I imagined them to be, than to have them voiced and realized into a very specific shounen fantasy. I can still relate into something sparse but that fidelity just pushes me out.
all you old men need to learn to just relax and embrace the silliness of anime. it’s good for you!!
though I see where you’re coming from, FF7 or Xenogears or whatever other jrpgs you like when you’re 15 probably seem a lot cooler and deeper and poetic when you have to interpret a poorly translated 3 line text box instead of having good voice acting
i get not liking awkward RPG voice acting but this a weird game to vent that complaint over? the main cast is great once they find their roles, aerith has an actual personality in this version, it’s fine
all the people complaining about it decided they hated it without having actors grow into their characters so like, their loss
like they were gonna hate it no matter how good it was so i wouldn’t fret
“forgot to switch it to Japanese so I’ll live with the consequences”
“Anime is good…sometimes”
“Half the reason I care about any of these characters at all is because of the english voice acting”
Just pointing those out because I feel it demonstrates how shifting or fickle many points of this argument can be, there are valid reasons for a person to be tired/wary of dubs no matter how much you are now feeling it
To bridge gaps via subjective listening is an entire basis for dub industry and respect. But also paralleled by an audience that prefers avoiding theoretical (or very much perceived sometimes!) distortions/noise, as much as possible or available. Kinda tempted now to do more modern rpgs with voices downed or off altogether, and see how I read em feel em
Not ashamed to admit to having a v. positive reaction to Cloud’s “let’s dance, assholes” having built to that from hearing “whatever” + “that’s it?” during battle 100x before
every game should have an option for animal crossing animalese in place of spoken words and we can just nip this arguement right in the bud
i loved how monster hunter world had a “made-up language from when we didn’t have budget for voice acting” dub setting
every time some hapless Shinra thugs roll up on Cloud and he just goes like, “it’s your funeral, asshole,” it briefly makes me think he’s the coolest guy in the world and now I know what every gamefaqs poster in 2006 saw in him
listen, we all know the best dub is killer7’s “feed the script through english to japanese machine translation, then machine translate it back into english, then feed it into the mac OS text to speech reader”
that kanye west talking about outrun 2 thing that got posted in the news thread reads like suda51 dialogue
Earth 22xx language seeded in meme-fication turned full adoption of what was, originally alien gibberish to convey across borders
Much is already in place
sometimes you hear a thing and it’s not for you,
sometimes you go to enjoy your hobby which is one shared with children and even though you don’t live with your parents anymore you hear their voice in your head behind you while you play a remake of a 22 year old game except you’re allowed to say the Real Bad Words without bleeping it out in the text with a bunch of &@#*! symbols, and you just hear them judging you for how you’re spending your time, and you just wish it was a text box so your ghost mom or dad stops judging you, and is that your ghost older sister walking in now
