Final Fantasy 7: The Original, The Remake, The Legacy

Wow, just needs some reverb

damn radiohead are pushing for a real contemporary sound this time

I liked all of the gundam I watched that wasn’t unstable preteen or teen psychic girl defectors flinging themselves at the protagonist or antagonist to try to force some sibling-they-want-to-bone relationship on

Aerith’s voice actress looks exactly like I expected her to

Everyone’s probably already figured this out but pressing L2 replaces the compass with a minimap in the top corner of the screen. And pressing it again clears the screen completely.

yeah, i gotta say: i never cared about Aerith until this version of the game.

maybe it’s because i was 14 and didn’t understand love. maybe it’s because the translation mostly missed all of her personality and made her kind of annoying.

but now, like…yeah, i’m in love with Aerith, too, folks.

Aerith Gainsborough Aishiteru

They really brought a lot more charm out up close, but I’m admittedly a Lock(ed)harter

Aerith is def the videogame character I was most ever in love with. I carried a picture of her in my wallet in high school and I deserved to die. Over the years I’d kinda forgotten why. This reminded me (and built on it).

I feel like some of you maybe had bigger emotional attachments to this game than I realized

Yeah I kinda forgot how much I enjoyed VII (and even mainline FF, it’s been that long since one has wowed me).

In the early days of PSP I was gifted a copy of Advent Children and thought it was great but that was 13 years ago and I just learned there was Advent Children Complete, so I will have to check in and see how right/wrong I was.

I think I remember breeding chocobos as a kid more than I remember anything else from the game

Content warning: mortification

this is funny because I feel like the remake actually deliberately makes her more annoying than she was in the original (I feel like in the original translation she is almost completely devoid of personality). and in the end that made her more appealing and human and relatable.

they kind of did this with all the characters like cloud is more overtly a dick than he was in the original, tifa is like a neurotic mess compared to her relatively chipper portrayal in the original, etc.

I love it

I want them to do a super in-depth chocobo breeding/racing part of the game. I want to fly a gold chocobo through the world to reach the tiny island in the corner of the world where I can get the Knights of the Round materia and I want to explore the depths of the sea in a submarine and fight Emerald Weapon or whatever it was at the bottom of the ocean. I don’t care if all that stuff adds another five years to the development schedule I can wait.

yeah I want to emphasize that as much as I realize that me being adamant that the french dub is the good one is a specifically annoyingly me thing to do, I really love the way all of the characters are written

This remake understood that the real reason this game appeals is the characters, and it fleshes them out beautifully.

As @boojiboy7 pointed out on their excellent podcast, Kingdom Hearts at its core is about oddly specific and well-drawn childhood/early adolescent relationships and social dynamics. I think this game is doing a similar thing, but skewing toward mid to late adolescence and adulthood. This game may be anime as hell, but the specific insecurities of these characters, the personas they use to protect themselves, and the ways they try to connect with each other elevate the material.

Also I just got to the robot hand place and the music just leveled up, damn!

i’ve become bizarrely emotionally invested in this game considering i never played the original but i would literally sacrifice anyone else in my party for aerith so i’m with isfet i’m in love with her

and like the typical FF/SQEX sidekick cardboard cutout character trope/template, I am here to back Felix up on that pseudo-burgeoise claim.

It almost feels like source material levels of effort went into it, they either must have hit gold with this cast (i.e. their voice talent generally is way beyond our perceived normal level, they have by chance paid enough for the premier class, or maybe Nomura is just a japanese Felix/yuropean me equivalent-wuss, la fermeture-éclair tres bien/subarashiki kono sekai… i digress.)
