Final Fantasy 7: The Original, The Remake, The Legacy

Yes, all his combat win quotes are extremely good in japanese but his victory fanfare singing is perfect.

if someones able (im only watching this game not playing it) can they record and post different languages of barret yelling the victory song

The english voice actors have really grown on me and i would not have enjoyed the sector 5 slums nearly as much in a language i dont understand

I can’t stand the english VA and I don’t get how anyone can get anything out of it, it all just sounds like bottom of the barrel anime dub to me.

I find japanese barret singing with JA JA JA more charming than flat growl DA DA DA of english.

Love how the second one’s thumbnail has me flash thinking some hardcore cosplayer has taken up this nickname for his content, gonna sing a beloved series classic

The power of graphics and temporal distortion

Another beauty of how characters generate ATB is how it ties in with their combat strategies. Barret’s Overshot builds huge ATB and then taps out for a bit. He makes for a good magic user (he’s never in the party at the same time as Aerith to keep him useful) so you tend to switch to him, generate ATB, cast spells and then forget about him for a bit. If you had to constantly maintain his ATB it would get frustrating. Tifa meanwhile has high speed and builds and expends ATB all the time so it makes sense for her to be a frequently active party member.

The pacing continues to get worse, but I also get that they couldn’t just add the FF7 overworld or new towns so it all has to fit in Midgar.

Also Cloud just has the two “modes”, so unless you really want to build stagger (which builds faster with Abilities anyway) he requires no maintenance in combat so you can focus on your party members.

It’s weird to essentially agree with a lot of the sentiments about this (and other English dubs) on this forum while also understanding the incredible amount of talent and work that goes into making then function on a basic level under constraints, and then coming around to really appreciate any moments in a dub that barely manages to push through the nightmare those restraints impose.

When I worked on the last Star Ocean game I had to make a snap decision after every line was recorded on whether I could edit it to be within 2/10ths of a second of the JP file (if it happened during a certain type of cutscene… there were 3 different categories of lines that related to their timing) or whether to confer with the director and translator on a rewrite. Wash, rinse, and repeat for dozens and dozens of lines per an hour until your brain melts.

I probably came up with 1/4 of the rewrites on my Star Ocean sessions. I was too good at it and I ended up taking over as engineer from another studio for the last 3 weeks of the game when they realized I was able to push the average line count per an hour up by about 30 lines per hour on average.

I don’t know anything about the circumstances of FFVII remake’s production, and they likely had a longer leash than that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some form of what I was talking about above was hanging over their heads at every moment. So when I say that I feel like the English dub in remake actually worthwhile in the end, that’s where I’m coming from!

I’ve come to believe the constraints are the problem, the overwhelming cause of mediocre high-budget pop entertainment. Why are we always struggling with design compromises we don’t believe make a better game? We have to, because a team this large can’t do it any other way, because a game of our scale can’t be mass-market without x, because we’re unable to lower our budget because we’re afraid of the product class below us.

Realizing that we could do more with less is – I’ll never forget when, at the indie studio, we hosted Luke Smith for an evening just before Destiny shipped. And he was so jealous that when we talked about a problem we ended with, yeah, we’ll try that out – that we could get stuff done that he couldn’t because he had too many resources. And he told us about the company getting him a dogwalker just so he wouldn’t have to go home in the middle of the day

Those are fighting words! I just realized I will get the platinum because I just got let off the leash in the sector 5 slums so I popped into the community center and the jukebox has a nice, classy sounding version of the battle victory music called Tango of Tears so I’m just standing around listening to it while people ramble about Don Corneo and the Midgar plate and the reactors and stuff and this is my game of the year right now. Cloud even taps his foot to the music.

Really liked the banter between Aerith and Cloud and how she keeps playfully calling him out and trying to break his cool, tough guy shell. She even makes you pick flowers with her lol. I really like her character even more than I did originally. I bet in the next game they make you choose between saving her or saving some other character. I don’t know I have a feeling they’re definitely going to kill someone but since this is probably alternate universe FFVII or whatever they’ll switch it up somehow just to keep the long time fans second guessing themselves and surprised.

Tempted to keep playing into the night but I can spend tomorrow evening soaking in sector 5 and doing the side jobs so I’ll probably leave it right here. Good game, it’s got me wanting to go back to FFXV after I’m finished with it.

From someone that grew up on PS2 anime game dubs, the dub is several miles more produced. It also helps that all the main characters aren’t voices I instantly recognize. Only the background characters sound kinda anime.
