Final Fantasy 7: The Original, The Remake, The Legacy

I need to find out what a Scottish accent transliterated in Japanese looks like

I think I read somewhere that Cait Sith just talks in some kind of Kansai style?

From the plate collapse onward Barret is more than a bit shook and I think the va or his direction got their tone ironed out, came across fairly well. Still got a lot of tang just not so gratingly, and between Aerith’s house to Shinra HQ he gets some really good lines in.

I don’t think his much later dialogue reflects disowning past causes or radical methods, just a person coming to terms with full on reckless abandon.

I’d hope for that kind of introspection the translation was close, but am curious about parts like this.

I think, per twitter, figuring out exactly what Barret’s beliefs are will determine whether my opinion of this game will get me against the wall come the revolution

getting caught up on OG FF7 update: man the story gets real dumb and convoluted huh

whoever posted that it was a good idea to just make this entire first game of the Remake just be the initial Midgar portion (despite it being a tiny portion of the original game) was right, it is one of the most interesting parts of the original game

man I don’t like any of the party members that you get after Midgar either lol

my problem with barrets voice actor now is no one can strain their vocal chords like that for more than a few hours without losing their voice but somehow barret can guttural yell forever, i cant stop thinking about the voice actors throat

daphny would you and your iron chords take THE BARRET CHALLENGE

but WOW my partner was playing call of duty and i said aloud ‘final Fantasy 7 remake has really made all other game signage and storefronts look like SHIT’ this game raised the bar so high with fake advertising and BUILDINGS

My personal feeling is that after the original english trailer (bad first impression) and the bombing mission demo (not much better) is that in the full game you hear each of the main cast settle into their roles in real time playing the game, from the point where they are introduced.

I’ve been a recordist for games for 10 years now and I’ve also worked with some of these actors, so maybe it’s just me hearing it…but I get the distinct sense that over the course of several recording sessions there was a progression of confidence and familiarity with the material. With Aerith and Barret’s actors especially, you can almost pinpoint when the actors are relaxing and gaining an understanding of the weird tone that the material dictates how their characters navigate it.

At the end of the day, it coulda pushed harder to erase some typical dub issues (constant vocalized exhales and grunt reactions that don’t need to be in the English version and even get excised from Funimation dubs these days) and it’s still distinctively “anime” stylistically, but it’s still a game about a guy with a giant sword and a 16 inch hair spike, so. I almost switched to JP voices for part of Wall Market, but I’m actually glad I switched back now that I’m in Chapter 13. Some of the minor characters still pop up with odd choices or maybe casting decisions, but it’s hard to bat a thousand on that when you’re localizing a massive JRPG.

i dont understand why you would have the voice actors on anything but a language you’re fluent in because of all the incidental dialogue that goes on in fights/after fights/between stuff that isnt subtitled. its kinda where my favorite character building happens

does barret shout-sing the victory theme in the japanese dub? barret yelling that theme will stick with me for a long time

he does in the French

It struck me that the same joke is played in FF XV but I think Barret wears it better.

its me, the ffxiv guy. this is EXACTLY what makes the english voice acting so great in 14. you hear when each actor starts clicking with their character, when they get the confidence to BECOME the character, because the character is developing as the voice actor is acting. even if you have great english voice actors they still have to learn their characters and get into the part

i think a lot about the lost odyssey voice actor for jansen, and how he wasnt familar with videogame logic at all and he had to learn a bunch of stuff about jrpg tropes to voice act well. i think a lot of voice actors are normies and having them play these parts well is issekai shit

Nearly all of this (especially 2nd paragraph) occupies my mind for like, at least 2/3rds of eng dub work if I leave it as. Not exclusive to any language or even acting really, the extent with certain dub work just seems so crammy

Yeah, dub/game production is usually pretty fast even when we’re allowed to “take our time”. There are occasions where pickups are recorded but usually only to cover outright errors.

I have worked on a small handful of projects where scenes that were “in the can” but not resonating emotionally after playtesting were later re-recorded. It’s a goddamn luxury.

I was gonna say it’s great if certain usually early parts can be revisited but it’s probably hard to justify a lot of the time.

I’m more inspired to record vox again this week, nice
