to me this is indicative that all the good things about XV were not a fluke and maybe squeenix has turned over a new leaf. plenty of things here feel inspired by nier automata as well. it really just makes me hope we can a project like this without nomura at the helm lol.
is it reductive of me to pin all the blame on him?
I think the quarantine is making me a little crazy because I just caught a glance at cloud’s completely smooth armpit and got a little case of the vapors
I mean, it can be since attributing something that may have been team spun like that via namedrop is too easy, on the other hand…big readings of his signature!
more to the point, what happened to tifa’s cooking? why did that get retconned out? where were the fucking continuity enforcing plot-wraiths for this one, huh???
Tifa’s ability to cook was replaced with mixology so we only have Jessie’s mum to blame here, who clearly bakes too many aphrodisiacs into her pizzas if we literally take Jessie as very much her mother’s daughter
I haven’t considered Sephiroth in any way as badass as the Internet would have it since becoming an adult but I didn’t think he was ever as creepy or as MUWAHAHHA Cartoon Villain as he’s portrayed in this. A bit one note methinks
I also think the prevailing fan theory is that the sephiroth cloud encounters in this game is a manifestation of the “post-original game” sephiroth that has become powerful enough to transcend time and dimensionality or whatever and not the relatively sane, power-hungry villain of the original? if that makes any sense lol. god trying to explain this makes it sound so dumb though.
the funniest thing about this is that there’s interview clips with nomura talking about the shades/whispers where he’s like “I hope newcomers to this game can enjoy these new additions as well” and like, no my dude, this shit makes no sense to anyone but the most canon-obsessed fanboy and seems completely nonsensical/pointless to literally anyone else??
like what the fuck is a newcomer supposed to make of the ending scene where it cuts to zack with zero context?
Last night I was watching a highlight reel of one of my favourite YouTubers playing through the game and everything after Rufus made no sense to me whatsoever even as someone who played through Midgar 6 months ago
(I realize that it’s likely the highlight reel cut out boring things that would help explain it but I was incredibly confused)
yeah everyone else is saying this but everything after motorcycle escape is complete gibberish, i really think they beefed it, especially after the boss fights leading up to that (after hojo dungeon, anyway) were the best in the game
anothersphere said this too but yeah the bit in og ffvii when they wake up and the cell doors are open and they follow the blood trail is so good and i think making sephiroth a weird ghost hallucination thing instead of an actual physical person walking around somewhere is weak as hell. and i absolutely do not know what the fuck the point of the barret getting stabbed bit is
love the shinra history walkthrough tour sequence though, wow
no it’s still extremely confusing with full context lol
like I mean it’s fine because it seems as if all this meta-narrative shit is self contained to that one section and it’s just an excuse for them to do whatever they want for the rest of the series and I’m fine with that, I just wish they hadn’t done it in such an incredibly stupid way
and yeah I miss the original sephiroth sequence in the shinra HQ, it’s so much cooler than the mess we ended up with here.
the rest of the internet: upset about the ending
me: scrolling the aerith+tifa fanart hashtag on twitter & faving every pic, but only RTing if tifa is jacked
(i haven’t actually finished the game yet don’t @ me)
After seeing several people say “you probably wanna play the original all the way through to really understand some stuff that happens in the remake” I’ve been watching a stream/let’s play of FF7 in the background while I do other stuff.
I’ve played FF7 before but never got too far in it and ran out of patience to play it despite trying to play it several times and wanting to experience it fully. FF7 has always been this spectre haunting me, a game that I’ve always wanted to play all the way through since I was little, but I guess missed the timeframe to have the intimate childhood/teen experience with it that a lot of other people had. My childhood experience of FF7 was playing the PC demo (the battle arena) several times over, and appreciating the Nomura artwork for the characters on a magazine obsessively.
I guess this is what propelled me to buy the remake so quickly. I’ve always been a secondhand fan of FF7 for as long as I remember. “love FF7, love to play it someday”, etc.
Anyway watching so much FF7 inspired me to draw this
i beat this today. so, some thoughts (i’ll spoiler the parts that are spoilery):
overall, definitely a better game than i could have anticipated; they really nailed it with this one. i was so happy to play through basically every moment of this game.
as far as the end segments go:
i guess they really are going for an Eva Rebuild thing here. on the one hand, i think they killed the pacing and introduction of Sephiroth in this one. for newcomers, the sense of dread around him is, i think, completely gone. you see him in the first few hours, even, and i kind of miss how slow the build-up was to actually meeting him in the original.
but that said, it still wasn’t too bad. but yes, very Advent Children kind of vibe. it makes me think that, since they blew the Sephiroth load really early on, that the latter entries in this game (series?) are going to be really off the rails. and honestly…yeah, bring it, i’m down with whatever wacky shit they wanna do. let’s save Aerith, fuck it.
i thought the Zack scene was kind of ambiguous; i’m not convinced that wasn’t just a memory, but hey, maybe all pathways are possible, huh?
wait what if in Episode 3 of this the cast of Chrono Trigger is suddenly introduced
jk. but…
am still hoping for a Twin Peaks: The Return thing with this game’s conclusionm, tbh.
The dumbest part of that whole end sequence to me overall was Barrett getting stabbed.
It served no purpose other than to get him out of the way for a boss fight and the “you weren’t fated to die here” ghost save just makes it look like literally nothing matters and there’s no consequences going forward. you shouldn’t even be able to game over, they might as well go full bore and if you party wipe have the Frighteners ghosts show up to mash the Load Game button for you.
doing a second playthrough now (trying Hard Mode out on Chapter 1) and playing with Japanese voices this time.
everyone saying Barret’s JP voice is better than the ENG one…i am gonna have to hard disagree, i think. they sound pretty comparable in their respective ways.
I’m not going to play this twice, so would it be a good idea to wait for this to come out on PC and download someone’s save that unlocks hard mode? (I’ve been thinking I should do that the next time I run into a game that sounds tedious in normal and more engaging on hard.)
