I laughed really hard at cloud getting his stupid ass sword stuck in the doorframe

I don’t like how a dumb and garish crossdressing scene made me feel dysphoric.

i have now played like 5 hours of final fantasy 7 remake and we are officially well past ff7 stuff i know about. i like the relationship barret has with his daughter, im glad hes calmed down since the demo stuff. jessie is way too horny for cloud but i really enjoyed (beginning of chapter 4) MOTORCYCLE ASSHOLE and his entire extremely anime gimmick, I lol’d when jessie was like “what is this guy’s fucking deal” and cloud was like “WHATEVER SAME SHIT HE’S A DUMBASS” in the middle of the fun road rash minigame they make you play. she had the same reaction I did lol. sneaking into jessie’s dad’s to steal his id card gave me anxiety i hate being in places im not supposed to in games where i think im gonna get caught and forced into a conversation and i dont like stealing stuff from nice people, i dont break pots in people’s houses in zelda either!!

i spent 30 minutes playing darts in the bar on accident because the second a tutorial showed up on how to play darts my brain immediately entered yakuza mode. tifa is probably my favorite character so far, i like how nice she is and that she dunks on cloud in a playful way compared to some of the avalanche people who are just mean to him. every time anybody swears in this game i laugh because i’m very mature. i’m gonna kill nomura if i have to see wedge be I LIKE EATIN CUZ IM FAT and walking around patting his stomach 24/7 one more fucking time. the buster sword is only slightly more cool than the gunblade conceptually, i like the PUNISHER MODE where you start swinging it around like guts from berserk. cloud constantly grumbling and sighing every time anybody tries to show him any affection is the most relatable i’ve ever found GAMEFAQS’ #1 MOST POPULAR CHARACTER OF ALL TIME.

this game is fucking great though, i’ve learned over the years sometimes you just have to let nomura take the wheel

you prolly gonna eat them there words once you get to the credits

Buddy, I love Lightning Returns, the man cannot pen an ending that would shock me

the wedge shit is like

you’ll be like this moment is too high stakes, they won’t do it this time, and then the game will be like hold my beer

just that escalating higher and higher

that’s probably my biggest straightforward complaint (though i’ve got a lot of wobblier ones)

yeah and like most of my complaints it’s at its worst in the first few hours when you’re not at all confident in where they’re taking it

One of my favorite things about the Remake is how each of the half dozen weapons everyone gets can be grown to comparably usable by the end, though also tweaked to finer builds. Beyond learning abilities if you have an affinity with one, no major penalty for sticking with it (aside from the big change ups like Nail Bat and Barret’s blunts which, can kinda be made to work). It’s not incredibly deep or anything but enough. Acquiring new weapons becomes a lot more interesting once a game tries making them not so instantly disposable, especially jrpgs and I hope they continue developing gear with incentives other than stat ups.

I want to replay it on “ng+” via Hard mode and Chapter Select for more pushing into their systems and to revisit the amazing work they did with uh about 80% of the game. Unfortunately I think a lot of the dungeons are going to stay or grow more tiresome, and the good/bad ratio, major imbalances of hyper care given or cast aside will be just as pronounced.

I thought about this a bit and all I can say is, I hope you’re not gathering all dissatisfaction, or yeah even contempt toward some of the departures/denouement biz at work…as someone else’s having no appetite for change.

Yeah on the note of Aerith’s fate I know I’d include keeping that as a huge part of the reason for this whole deal. But I am also immediately malleable, open to a giant remix or shifts into something new, granted they deliver upfront!

It’s ultimately the nature or manner of how those changes occur come, that also results in a whole other dimension of “good taste” sensing some acrid bs. This game does a lot that’s amazing and I’m sure Tim will have his major feature length review, involving how dear it is to himself and many a game player but holy shit, whether Nomura or Nojima or Kitase, I can’t abide some of the buffoonery

My greatest dream is they go full rebuild of evangelion on this shit and it’s gonna be completely off the rails by part 3

You don’t have any investment or attachment to the original right?

*Sorry I should clarify, I get you loving the trainwreck. Of course no one has to be into the og thing to dig this. It just hits a few big notes not so much stupefying as like, highly observable from all angles: lame copouts. It’s more sad than funny! Crazy as Re build of Eva is it slowly veers then embraces a whole new state, but doesn’t exactly do this number

hell, ffvii is my favorite game (after ffxiv sorry) but i still wanna see an alternate take. also don’t act like ff7 never went off the rails in the original. that entire game is watching the people who were working on the game figure the characters and story out as they went along WHICH IS GREAT, and i’ll always love the original but i have had a bigger emotional response to everything going on in ff7r than i ever did in the original.

That’s great and you’ll likely still love the rest of it! A lot of folks’re just gonna feel there’s some extremely bad storytelling that comes into play, regardless of it being different.

yeah, that’s fair. tbh there was a long walk a lot of ppl had to take to finally just be like “fuck, you know what, i liked final fantasy vii” and stopped caring about stuff like “this is just the final fantasy gamefaqs likes” or “the game sucks after you leave midgar” or “the story is too obtuse” and ppl started making huge plot faqs for it or “everyone looks like toys so i can’t take it seriously” or “haha aerith” and i’m not gonna do the same thing this time. that said, i’m only on chapter 14 now, so if the game ever should compel me to get upset i will think about it for a long time and then post about it lol

I basically only know about FF7 culturally so the two things that always stuck out to me about it were Aeris dying and the crossdressing stuff but I’m really enjoying this game as a standalone thing cuz of that.

it’s really funny you said this cuz I just saw these clowns stop to look at his asshole in a parking lot during a very urgent situation and had to stop playing for a few seconds to come to terms with it

edit: lol @ this completely slapstick scene immediately afterwards where they’re blasting like fucking Dynasty Warriors music and Jessie is being bizarrely horny, this game is so fucking gleefully silly and anime

a lifetime of yakuza games has prepared me for the Ultimate Challenge

the ending is bad, I’ve decided, and also I don’t care. I love this game so much. I don’t even mind the fillery dungeons because the base combat is so fun. and hard mode rules so far.

the fat shaming stuff with wedge is so frustrating bc he is otherwise so well done as a character and it feels completely unnecessary. the original game had one line where he’s like “I’ve put on weight because tifa’s cooking is so good!” which would be infinitely preferable to the like… 80’s college frat movie level of humor on display here. so weird too because the writing is otherwise so smart and purposeful and sensitive.

clearly this game had loads of intelligent sensible people working on it to make all these good decisions. I have to wonder how they felt about the batshit nomuraisms that it was all leading up to.

yeah i thought the ending was bad and… unnecessary? think ‘cowardly bombastic’ as @anothersphere put it was correct but it didn’t take away from the rest imo

still surprised doom stank and this was good
