FF7 in HD like this looks very dramatic, but it’s just a semblance covering the (very good) shonen essence underneath. I don’t think the game is trying to hide that either, and the contrast has actually really charmed me to the game.
My theory is (and it’s not about anyone’s opinions here in this thread) that gamers see graphics and its like that comic with the Gundam commentary shooting over the audience’s head. Some players are seeing FF7 look like they always wanted it to and are not happy that the game is so wry with being an anime shonen video game and deliberately different from the original. “Why aren’t you taking this seriously like I am >:(” is what I’ve felt like a lot of people are saying in other places I’ve chatted about the game.

I don’t have any experience with that tbh, usually I keep any given big budget game on English until I decide to flip it to French
ppl are mad because ff7 was the first game where someone said ‘shit’ and ‘damn’ and that was obviously a shorthand for some kind of deep sophistication and maturity that just must have been buried in there somewhere. now that all games say ‘shit’ and ‘damn’ the expectation was that the remake would somehow double down on sophistication and be the first game with full frontal male nudity or whatever

i mean i still think it’s cool how ff7 is a game about surviving massive personal trauma thru opening up to people who love & support you (so you can kill your space alien angel army buddy in a self-sacrificing act to save the planet as humanity is fucked either way (none of the sequels count, i am not letting go of 7’s go nagai ass ending))
it’s sloppy and dumb but square was really on one those years and i think there’s more there than just Adult Themes

Oh yeah. It’s a good game! I am just ‘that jerk’ and think that FF6 is all around better plot-wise, and see FF7 as the still-good beginning of the end rather than the apex.

All other music’s been adequately aight-good if not strained to modern symphonic bgm, the J-E-N-O-V-A (Quickening) and Those Who Fight Further (big ol arrangement ie Airbuster) ramp very well
Combatants might need endurance caffeine but this new definition sorely misses the character dynamics of Hyper (Jessie) and Tranquilizer use
final fantasy V has a scene where a character tries to use a phoenix down on a major character after they die
